The story of Chic unfolds like a pX4KTZhqZ movie script, in that you find yourself rooting for the good guy throughout Fj2ehhPIL despite knowing the shortfalls that occur in his life and these same shortfalls 7YSPj72wT occur to the common man each and every day; therefore the Harley story cj5r6gUzD connects at a higher level with the reader because we've all experienced similar ptQouFi8b things within our families.Of note, when Harley was finished playing at Ohio xMZVmw4iW State the Buckeyes had only one loss over his three seasons, Ohio State's first tfAkJrjly consensus first-team All-America selection and first three-time All-America 0yQ6txff7 selection, he became a charter inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame in UE8CX7AFw 1951, was critical in Ohio State's first victory over Michigan, and through his SQ4rsNu8f play the new Ohio Stadium aka "The Shoe" or "The Horseshoe" was finished shortly after Harley's last game at a total cost of $1.49 million and stood as the largest poured concrete structure in the world.I've written to Gene Smith, Vice President and Athletics Director, and others to state the importance of a statue of Charles "Chic" Harley at the stadium to accompany his retired jersey number on the ring of honor and that it is befitting for such an amazing and special player who made such a vast impact upon our Buckeyes, the city of Columbus, and the legacy that continues even until today. Additionally, consideration should be made to naming a street and building after him as well. PoulosI couldnt' be more impressed with the book that Todd Wessell wrote about his great uncle, Charles "Chic" Harley, a quiet hero of the gridiron who set all those incredible records at the dawn of modern college football. As much as Chic was primarily responsible for establishing Ohio State University as a perennial favorite among the nation's college teams, it was his quiet mystique and personable mannerisms that took him off the pedestal to make him a wonderful human being. I could see this book being made into a great movie since it has all the classic themes of a man who achieved more than anyone could have imagined, yet never got his "due" in the sports universe...and who suffered so long with a debilitating illness that prevented him from realizing his full potential in sports...but more importantly, the right of living a full and happy life. Everyone loves a humable hero...and Chic Harley couldn't be a more emblematic of someone who did so much for the fans who adored him...the records he set that stood for a long, long time...and the family who loved him for having achieved so much and for being such a warm and loving man...someone who deserved better in life. The way I read it, Mr. Harley never had that chance. This book finally brings his story to the nation's public eye...fresh and alive with thrilling recounts of games won or pivotally influenced by Chic...and the human drama that came a few short years later when at the dawn of furthering his career in professional sports, he fell victim to mental illness that may have ended one aspect of his life...but began the long journey of another. Again, I see great potential for this book being made into a film not just about his football heroics, but about his personal struggles to achieve a normal life...doing what he could do to maintain his dignity...affording us the pleasure of honoring a man who may be gone, but is certainly not forgotten. It would be a fine tribute to the legacy he left behind on the playing field...and in the hearts of those who knew him...a tribute that is in many ways long overdue. It's a story that needs to be told. Mr. Wessell should be congratulated for all his hard work and painstaking research in bringing us all a little closer the "real" story of a true American hero...Charles "Chic" Harley. The One And Only, is the story of Chic Harley, a quiet, bashful, unassuming man whose heroics during the early years of the 20th century transformed both college and professional football and set the stage for Ohio States propulsion into high stakes athletics and academics. The 314-page full length biography, authored by Chic Harley's great nephew Todd Wessell, walks the reader through a three-century journey describing how the Harley family emigrated from Ireland to Virginia, to Ohio and final ....

Our incredible inductees were legends in their sport, Olympic medalists, international icons, and can I just say, “Amazing human beings that were fun, kind, humble, and gracious to be awarded with such prestige!” As we roll into October, I want to remind all of you of our Homecoming Tailgate which will be at the French Fieldhouse on October 5th from 4-7pm prior to the Michigan State game. This is a great opportunity to join Varsity O and fellow Buckeyes for a food buffet, cash-bar, music, corn-hole, photo booth, and other fun surprises we have planned. We will also be celebrating our Jim Jones Career Achievement Award and Varsity O Loyalty award winners as well! Their first game was played on May 3, 1890 against Ohio Wesleyan University where the Buckeyes came out victorious, 20-14.
