David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord. These are examples of the exploits of the Three. Such interesting and historical stories in the Old Testament books, such as 2 Samuel, add a flavor to Biblical history that leaves some wanting more and some wanting less. The theological issues raised as one reads through such books have been the source of controversy for many years and decades if not centuries. I was recently privileged to read the second volume of the series Covenant of War as part of the Amazon Vine review program and look forward to reading the other two. Covenant of War is set in the time frame laid out in the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel when a divided Israel was torn between Ishbosheth,a surviving son of the late King Saul who led the 10 Northern tribes, verses David, the new king as decreed by God through the Hebrew prophet Samuel, who led the 2 tribes of Benjamin and Judah. And it tells the story of a desperate attempt by David to bring peace to the nation and unite it under Covenant of War rule so that a unified Israel could focus on defeating the Philistines. In doing so, he has given us a very human and, at times, graphic presentation of David and his legendary warriors referred to as The Covenant of War and The Thirty. The book is rich in detail and does justice Covenant of War the Biblical element of faith, notably Covenant of War ancient Hebrew faith, in a manner that provides some insight into their mindset toward life, death, and war. I liked this book because it gave an understandable perspective to a portion of the Bible that is often left alone because the languages and views of that day. And while it is a fictionalized account of certain Biblical passages, I believe that it is an honest rendering of that period in human history. Warning contains graphic battlefield scenes and actions. I would not recommend it for persons under 16 years of age. Note: I received a copy of this book via the Amazon Vine review program in exchange for review of it. I was not required to write a positive review. The Covenanters were a Scottish Presbyterian movement that played an important part in the history of Scotlandand to a lesser extent that of England and Ireland, during the 17th century. Presbyterian denominations tracing their history to the Covenanters and often incorporating the name continue the ideas and traditions in Scotland and internationally. They derive their name from the term covenant after the covenant sworn by Israel in the Old Testament. The Covenanters are so named because in a series of bands or covenants they bound themselves to maintain the Presbyterian doctrine and policy as the sole form of religion of their country. The first "godly band" of the Lords of the Congregation and their followers is dated December ; but more important is the covenant ofdrawn up by John Craig in consequence of Covenant of War strenuous efforts Roman Catholics were making to regain their hold upon Scotland, and called the King's Confession or Covenant of War Covenant. Based on the Confession of Faith ofthis document denounced the Pope and the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church in no measured terms. It was adopted Covenant of War the General Assembly of the , signed by King James VI and his household, and enjoined on persons of all ranks and classes, and was subscribed to again in and InScotland was in a state of turmoil. The new liturgy had been devised by a panel of Scottish bishops, including Archbishop Covenant of War of St. Andrews, but a riot Covenant of War its use was orchestrated in St Giles' Cathedral, , ostensibly started by Jenny Geddes. Fearing further measures on the part of the King, it occurred to Covenant of War Johnston Lord Warriston to revive the of Together with the cooperation of Alexander Henderson, Covenant of War revitalized National Covenant was finalized in early Additional matter intended to suit the document to the special circumstances of Covenant of War time was added, primarily a recital of the acts of parliament against "superstitious and papistical rites" and an elaborate oath to maintain the reformed Covenant of War. The covenant was adopted and signed by a large gathering in the kirkyard of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, on 28 Februaryafter which copies were sent throughout the country for signing. The subscribers engaged by oath to maintain religion in the form that it existed inand to reject all innovations introduced since that time, while also professing loyalty to the King. The year marked an apex of events for the Covenanters, for it was the time of broad confrontations with the established church supported by the monarchy. Confrontations occurred in several parts of Scotland, such as the one with the Bishops of Aberdeen by Covenant of War high level assembly of Covenanters staging their operations from Muchalls Castle. The General Assembly Covenant of War was composed of ardent Covenanters, and in the covenant was adopted by the Scottish Parliament, its subscription being made a requirement for all citizens. Before this date, the Covenanters were usually referred to as Supplicants, but from about this time the former designation began to prevail. The Covenanters raised an army to resist Charles I's Covenant of War reforms, and defeated him Covenant of War the Bishops' Wars. For the following ten years of civil war in Britain, the Covenanters were the de facto government of Scotland. Inthey sent Covenant of War army to Ulster in Ireland to protect the Scottish settlers there from the Irish Catholic rebels who had attacked them in the Irish Rebellion of The Scottish army remained in Ireland until Covenant of War end of the civil wars, but was confined to its garrison around Carrickfergus after its defeat at the Battle of Benburb in A further Covenanter military intervention began in The leaders of the English Parliament, worsted in the English Civil War, implored the aid of the Scots, which was promised on condition that the Scottish system of church government would be adopted in England. Following considerable debate, a document called the Solemn League and Covenant was drawn up. This was in effect a treaty between England and Scotland which called for the preservation of the reformed religion in Scotland and the reformation of religion in England and Ireland "according to the word of God and the example of the best reformed churches", and the extirpation of popery and prelacy. It did not explicitly mention Presbyterianism and included some ambiguous formulations that left the door open to Independency. It was subscribed to by many in both kingdoms and also in Ireland, and was approved by the English Parliament, and with some slight modifications by the Westminster Assembly of Divines. This agreement meant that the Covenanters sent another army south to England to fight on the Parliamentarian side in the First English Civil War. The Scottish armies in England were instrumental in bringing about the victory of the English Parliament over the King. In turn, this sparked the outbreak of civil war in Scotland in —47, as Scottish Royalist opponents of Covenant of War Covenanters took up arms against them. Royalism was most common among Scottish Roman Catholics and Episcopalians, who were opposed to the Covenanters' imposition of their religious settlement on the country. The Covenanters' enemies, led by James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose and aided by an Irish expeditionary force and Highland clans led by Alasdair Mac Colla won a series of victories over hastily raised Covenanter forces in — However, the Scottish Royalists were ultimately defeated in Septemberat the Battle of Philiphaughnear Selkirk. The disaster at Philiphaugh was largely due to the Royalists' own disunity and the return of the main Covenanter armies from England. The civil war in Scotland was a bitter episode which exposed the religious divisions between Presbyterians, Episcopalians and Catholics, the political divisions between Royalists and Covenant of War and the cultural divisions between the Highlands and Lowlands. The end of the first civil wars in Scotland and England left Covenant of War Covenanters hopeful that their Solemn League and Covenant would be implemented in the Three Kingdoms. However, Charles I Covenant of War to accept it when he surrendered himself to the Scots in Covenant of War He was taken to Newcastle, where several attempts were made to persuade him to take the Covenants. When this failed, he was handed over to the commissioners of Parliament in early However, many Covenanters, led by James Hamiltonwere suspicious of their English allies' intentions and opened Covenant of War negotiations with Charles I. He Covenant of War important concessions to them in the " Engagement " made with the Scots in December The Engagement was rejected by the militant Covenanters known as the Kirk Partywho wanted the King to endorse their agenda explicitly Covenant of War an alliance could be reached. Covenant of War Scottish army invaded England in support of the Engagement, but was routed at the Battle of Prestonleaving the Kirk Party in the ascendant in Scotland. The Westminster Confession of Faithwhich had been submitted for ratification in Covenant of War, was in part adopted by act of the English Parliament in as the Articles of Christian Covenant of War, while in Scotland Covenant of War was approved with minor reservations in August and ratified by the Scottish Parliament in February The Covenanters' insistence on dictating the future of both Scotland and England eventually led to all-out war with their erstwhile allies, the English Parliament, and to the Covenanters signing an alliance with Charles II known as the Treaty of Breda. Charles II, before landing in Scotland in Junedeclared by a solemn oath his approbation of both covenants, and this was renewed on the occasion of his coronation Covenant of War Scone in the following January. However, the Covenanters were utterly defeated in —52 by the forces of the English Parliament under Oliver Cromwell. From to the Covenanters, led by Covenant of War Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyllhad been the dominant party in Scotland, directing policy both at home and abroad. Their power had been seriously weakened, however, by Cromwell's victory at Dunbar in September and was practically destroyed after the Battle of Worcester and the English occupation Covenant of War Lowland Scotland. Under Cromwell's Commonwealth, Scotland was forced into a temporary Covenant of War with England and the General Assembly of the Kirk lost all civil power. Worse was to come for the Covenanters when Charles II was restored nine years later. Firmly seated upon the throne, Charles renounced Covenant of War covenants, which in were declared unlawful oaths to be abjured by all persons holding public offices. Argyll himself was executed for treason, episcopacy was restored, was appointed Archbishop of St Andrews and Primate of Scotland, the court of high commission was revived, and ministers who refused to recognize the authority of the bishops were expelled from their livings. Archbishop Sharp survived an assassination attempt in only to be killed by another Covenant of War of Covenanters in Following the restoration of Episcopacy rebel ministers began to preach at secret open-air meetings in the countryside known as '' A period of sustained persecution began. Oppressive Covenant of War against these illegal field assemblies where attendance was made a capital offence [1] led to an outbreak of armed rebellion inoriginating in Galloway. Advancing from the west towards Edinburgh, a small force of badly armed Covenanters was defeated at the Battle of Rullion Green in the Pentland Hillsa location which caused the Covenant of War tragic episode to be misleadingly named the Pentland Rising. To quell unrest in south- west Scotland, the government brought in 6, Highland soldiers, described by its enemies as an "inhumane and barbarous Highland host" which was quartered on suspected Covenanters and was Covenant of War of committing many atrocities. A further rebellion broke out inafter the unexpected success of a group of covenanters, armed with pitch forks and the like, against government forces led by John Graham of Claverhouse at the Battle of Drumclog. For a Covenant of War the authorities looked in danger of losing control of the south west of Scotland, as more and more people joined the rebel camp at Bothwell near ; but only a few weeks after Drumclog the rebels were defeated at the Battle of Bothwell Brig. In the weeks before the battle the Covenanters spent more time arguing among themselves than preparing for the inevitable counterstroke, which did much to contribute towards their downfall. Of 1, captured rebels taken to Edinburgh, some were imprisoned in an area of Greyfriars Kirkyard over the winter months. Inevitably, the government behaved harshly at first towards some of those caught in arms. On the initiative of James, Duke of Monmouthwho led the king's army to victory at Bothwell Brig, a more conciliatory policy was followed for a time, though this met with limited success. Through the period of repression the Covenanters held their convictions with a zeal that was only intensified by the persecution. Covenant of War them it was a matter of belief. For the government, in contrast, the whole conventicle movement was seen as a problem of public order, which they attempted to deal with often using very inadequate resources. However, after the collapse of the rebellion a more dangerous element entered into the whole equation. A painting showing the last Covenanter martyr James Renwick being taken to execution in In a more extreme mood appeared among sections of the Covenanter underground, which found expression in a document known as the Sanquhar Declaration. This was the manifesto of the followers of the Reverend Richard Cameronsoon Covenant of War be known as the Cameronians. Hitherto, many in the Covenant of War underground maintained an outward loyalty to the king, despite their opposition to the religious policy of his government; but the Cameronians took matters to a new height, renouncing their allegiance to Charles and denouncing his brother, James, as a papist. One extreme position inevitably led to another: the government in attempting to stamp out sedition authorized field executions without trial. Covenant of War was the beginning of what later called the Killing Covenant of War. Although this period was to become an important part of Covenanter martyrology, it was far less ferocious than the name implies. Cameron himself was killed in a clash with government forces at Ayrs Moss in Julybut his followers, now a tiny part Covenant of War the Covenanter movement, continued to exist. After the accession of James VII in the King issued a series of Letters Covenant of War Indulgence allowing such "ousted ministers as had lived peaceably and orderly to return to their livings". When William of Orange summoned a Convention of the Estates which met on 14 March in Edinburgh to consider whether Scotland should recognise him or James, forces of Cameronians arrived to bolster William's support. In the subsequent Jacobite risingthe Cameronian Guard helped to defeat the Jacobite Highlanders, particularly at the Battle of Dunkeld. Although the Cameronians had helped to defend the Revolution, they were disappointed that their religious views were not adopted by the new government. The binding obligation of the National Covenant and the Solemn League and Covenant was passed over since the Acts of Parliament in favour of these had been rescinded by Charles and were not revived under William and Mary. For some Covenanters even William of Orange was an "uncovenanted" King since he was head of the Church of England which was an episcopal church. Perhaps people in the south west made an issue of the failure to maintain the covenants and also, with some justification, viewed the new establishment as tainted by Erastianism. They formed the United Societies refusing to recognise the "usurped" Church of Scotland. Though the rebellion had ended and a degree of Presbyterian tolerance for other faiths had been suggested by thanks given for James's Indulgence offor allowing all Covenant of War serve God after their own way and manner", [3] memories of ' ' Covenant of War now kept alive by monuments and tombstones at the many martyr graves across the south of Scotland, particularly the south west. Scotland's heritage comes at a price which invokes our greatest heart felt thanks for the lives sacrificed on the anvil of persecution, when innocent blood stained the heather on our moors and ran down the gutters of our streets with sorrow and sighing beyond contemplation. Tombs are scattered around the moors and monuments were added later, for "if the authorities learnt that a murdered Covenanter had been given a decent burial, their bodies were usually disinterred and buried in places reserved for thieves and malcontents. Quite often the corpse was hanged or beheaded first", and burying the body in Covenant of War kirkyard could result in another punitive death. The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland from the Restoration to the Revolution by Robert Wodrowpublished inproduced a detailed record and denounced the persecution of the Covenanters. This martyrology would be brought forward again when elements in the Church of Scotland felt it to be suffering state interference, as at the Disruption of The United Societies continued without preaching, sacraments, or government until they were joined by one ordained minister inthen in the Reformed Presbytery was organised. Covenanters fleeing persecution had set up churches in Ireland and North America and several small denominations were founded, including the Reformed Presbyterian Covenant of War. More recently some historians have portrayed the Covenanters as an early revolutionary movement and the Cameronians as forerunners of an internationalist radical left-wing tradition. From a religious perspective, "The king had been defeated in his attempt to dictate the religion of his subjects; Presbyterianism became the established religion. But Covenant of War had been equally proved that the subjugation of the State to the Church, the supremacy, political as well as ecclesiastical, of the Kirk, was an impossibility. Both additional factions proved to be invaluable to the efforts of humanity, as the Covenant of War taken from Forerunner constructs and the Flood invasion of High Charity were helpful in splitting the Covenant apart in October of The war was instigated by the Covenant, whose Prophets discovered that humans were directly related to the Forerunners. In order to keep the Covenant Empire intact, war was declared against humanity. Over the next few decades, the Covenant, with superior numbers and technology, overpowered humanity on many worlds, including heavily defended strongholds such as Reach. Aside from several notable triumphs, Covenant of War UNSC would only win scattered and costly victories, most of which the Spartan super- soldiers contributed to immensely. The final battle took place on December 11, The official end of war ceremony occurred on March 3, The war ultimately lasted for a total of Covenant of War years. Humanity and the Covenant first came into direct contact on February 3,when a Kig-Yar Frigate, the Minor Transgressiondiscovered a human ship that had dropped out of slipspace due to a problem with the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine. The Kig-Yar raided that ship and another one. The Harvest shipping operations AI, Sif, found out about the raids as a result of the distress beacon from the ships although she and an undercover ONI spook on Harvest thought that Insurrectionists, not aliens, were behind the Covenant of War. When the Covenant Covenant of War with another ship and a contingent of Jiralhanae, the UNSC proposed a meeting via pictogram to trade. The Covenant met the UNSC on Harvest, but were only interested in claiming the relics that the Luminary had detected on Harvest, completely oblivious that the humans were the "relics" in question. The meeting was botched after Osmoa member of the Colonial Militiawas attacked Covenant of War a nervous Unggoypart of a second Covenant force sent to look for the relics. As a result, a firefight erupted between the two groups and the Covenant retreated back to their ship. The Prophets declared Covenant of War to be an affront to their gods later propaganda would declare humans had inhabited and "defiled" Forerunner artifacts and worldsand called for a crusade against the Human species. The Covenant's final objective was nothing less than total genocide. Unknown to all but the highest echelons of leadership, the campaign to exterminate Humanity was an attempt by the Prophets to maintain political and religious power. In truth, the Prophets had discovered Forerunner objects that the Luminary revealed on Harvest were actually Humans which the Prophets interpreted as meaning that the Humans were descendants of the Forerunners, or possibly surviving Forerunners. Initially, the Covenant interpreted Covenant of War glyph from the luminary as "Reclamation. This stood in direct contradiction to the Covenant religion. The Hierarchs, recognizing that this truth would destroy the Covenant, declared war on Humanity, hoping the truth would perish with their newly declared foe. The first battle of the war was the extended, albeit one-sided, ground battle which took place on Harvest. Eventually, the Covenant used their capital ships to glass the planet's surface. The Covenant continued to attack Covenant of War destroy Humans wherever they were found, using their Luminaries to find Human worlds. Though the UNSC forces fought bravely, inferior technology made any victory difficult - dependent on strategic and numerical superiority, often with the aid of Spartans. Human armor, missiles, magnetic accelerator cannons, and crude slipspace technology were asymmetrically Covenant of War with Covenant energy shields, plasma torpedoes, energy projectors, and pinpoint slipspace jumps. The Covenant, fighting a war of extermination, did not need to commit to full ground invasions except in special circumstances. Covenant ships Covenant of War only to destroy human space-borne defenses, then reduce the planet's surface to glass with orbital plasma bombardments. Covenant troops were used to soften up UNSC ground forces, or hunt for holy relics. Meanwhile, the Covenant returned to Harvest, determined to recapture the planet. The Prophet of Regret converses with the 17th Arbiter on the destruction Covenant of War the human race. Despite their major numerical and technological advantages over humanity, bythe Covenant High Prophets had realized that the task of destroying an entire sapient species had a logistical burden beyond anything that the Covenant military could muster without leaving Covenant space defenseless. These concerns would be justified by extreme Covenant losses during the war's culmination in The Prophet of Regret dispatched an Arbiter to Harvest to claim a Forerunner artifact buried under the north pole of Harvest. Acquisition of advanced technology would allow a quick, decisive victory in the conflict. The battle resulted in victory for Cole, despite major casualties. Upon discovering that the Covenant, under the command of 'Moramee, had excavated Forerunner artifacts in the northern polar region, Captain James Cutter deployed ground forces to remove the Covenant occupation. Covenant of War predicted, the Covenant followed the information from the artifact to Arcadia. The Covenant hoped that the planet would contain more Forerunner artifacts for them to claim, and while they only found a complex of ruinsinformation garnered from them led them to Shield Spirit of Fire followed and removed the Covenant presence from the planet. However, 'Moramee's capture of an important civilian researcher forced Captain Cutter to pursue the Covenant without reinforcements. On the Shield World, the crew of Spirit of Fire eventually discovered that the Covenant needed Professor Anders, by definition a Reclaimer, to activate the Apex and claim the huge fleet of Forerunner starships within. Despite their incredible combat ability, there were never enough Spartans to meet demand for wide scale deployment. The Covenant of War of Colonel James Ackersonthese Spartans would be trained with a greater emphasis on stealth and teamwork, and would be sent on missions against high-priority targets with suicidal odds. Insurrectionist attacks increased in the face of what they perceived as a removal of their right to freedom of movement. This was to culminate Covenant of War the discovery of Insurrectionists using Covenant weapons modified for human use from seemingly renegade Kig-Yar. Shocked, the UNSC saw this as a major threat to security. The Covenant viewed it as heresy that humans would modify their Covenant of War, and as a result the Prophet of Regret dispatched Thel 'Vadamee to destroy the source of the modified weapons: The Rubble. These Kig-Yar supplied the weapons, and the Insurrectionists modified them. It later transpired that the Prophet of Truth had ordered the Kig-Yar to ally with the humans so that they could discover the location of Earth from stolen navigation data or through tracking devices in the weapons. Through this, the Covenant found two more worlds Covenant of War attack. On June 1,the Covenant finally broke into the Inner colonies. However, these victories were offset by the loss of New Constantinopleits colonies at Leonis Minorisand the total destruction of the force of Spartan-IIIs deployed to destroy the Covenant base. This battle became colloquially known as Admiral Cole's last stand due to the presumed death of Covenant of War Preston J. In addition to the alleged death of Cole, over Covenant vessels, two fleets worth, were completely vaporized when UNSC nuclear missiles detonated inside the atmosphere of Viperidaea super massive gas giant. This detonation spurred spontaneous fusion at the core of Viperidae, temporarily turning the super gas giant into a brown dwarf star. Cole's achievements in this battle Covenant of War were only rivaled by the destruction of Unyielding Hierophant and the actions of John throughout the course of the war. Towards the end of the Covenant of War inthe Office of Naval Intelligence was resigned to the fact that humanity may only have months left before the Covenant destroyed the remaining Inner colonies and moved on against Earth. The last year of the war saw humanity's largest defeat, but also saw several of their greatest victories, coupled with the destruction of the Covenant as a galactic power. The Fall of Reach that followed resulted in staggering losses for both sides, but ended in a Pyrrhic Covenant victory. The coordinates Covenant of War to the Forerunner ring world of Halo. Unwilling to risk damaging the sacred ringthe Covenant was forced to fight the Humans on Halo's surface rather than using its usual glassing tactics. The Covenant found the Humans very adept at fighting on the surface, employing their firearms and vehicles in classic guerrilla raids. Unable to counter the tactics employed by the Humans, the Covenant was defeated again and again, including one instance when humans boarded their grounded cruiser, the Truth and Reconciliationand successfully Covenant of War with a group of captives, including the captain of the Pillar of AutumnCaptain Jacob Keyes. The Flood, having been imprisoned within Halo for many thousands of years, spread quickly throughout the ring, killing Covenant of War assimilating every unsuspecting human and Covenant in their path. During the course of the battle, the Spartan-II known as John discovered the true nature of Halo and proceeded to detonate the crashed Pillar of Autumn's engines, destroying the ring, and escaped, [14] much to the Covenant's dismay. Not only had the Covenant war machine been denied victory, a sacred artifact of the gods themselves had been destroyed. The result of the battle devastated Covenant morale in the short term. The destruction of Halo and the later loss of the flagship Ascendant Justice to the surviving UNSC forces led to Supreme Commander Thel 'Vadamee being disgraced and demoted before being branded with the Mark of Shame[15] leaving him dead in the eyes of the Sangheili. Only the intervention of the Prophet of Truth prevented 'Vadamee's certain execution. He was instead given the rank of Arbiter and sent to quell a Heretic uprising that had taken root on the Gas Mine around Threshold. Shortly after the defeat at Halo, Covenant of War Covenant had amassed a large fleet consisting of five hundred Jiralhanae -led warships, apparently intended to assault Earth directly. After retrieving a Forerunner artifact, Apocalypso made a Slipspace jump directly to Earth. When the ship tumbled into real space and crashed on the moon, Covenant of War Pious Flea sent a message to the heart of the Covenant military, containing reconnaissance data, Covenant of War, star Covenant of War, and the coordinates of the Forerunner Artifact, which was now on Earth. However, the Covenant had not identified Earth as the Human homeworld, and the Unyielding Hierophant's fleet was never expressly identified as an invasion force; this is merely a reasonable assumption made by the Human forces upon discovery of the fleet's destination of Sol. This leaves the exact nature of the fleet's mission uncertain, as there is no definitive proof that the Covenant were intending to attack their enemy's homeworld. Nonetheless, the human survivors of Installation 04 correctly assessed the fleet to be a direct threat to Earth, and, using a captured Covenant flagshiplured the armada into a trap and destroyed it. A few weeks after this defeat, the Prophet Covenant of War Regret led a small fleet of fifteen ships to Earth [17] in order to locate a Forerunner artifact Covenant of War as the " Ark. When a counter-attack by the Marines and John inflicted heavy losses Regret was forced to flee, leaving his fleet to burn. His carrier jumped into Slipspace from within the city, damaging it severely. Unfortunately for Regret, four Human ships, In Amber Clad among them, had followed them through their own Slipspace rupture to Installation Led by John, the Humans forced their way through Regret's forces until they had reached the Prophet himself. At that moment, High Charityhaving learned of Delta Halo, arrived and launched multiple waves of Phantom dropships to aid Regret. However, they were withdrawn by the Prophet of Truth as part of his plan to remove the Sangheili from power in the Covenant. However, Truth had perhaps underestimated the Covenant of War impact his 'reforms' would have on the Covenant's military campaign. John ultimately assassinated Regret, dealing a heavy blow to the Empire's political structure. The Prophet of Truth then gave the order to glass the temple in which Regret was residing. John barely escaped, only to be captured by the Gravemind.
