Faithful Reprint EditionBy Joe FranklinThis is a faithful reprint edition of the old Marvel Vampire Tales Magazines from the 1970s. Complete black white horror comics as well as reviews and short fiction shine in this odd-ball formatted edition. This is a great way to read all those old horror stories without having to track down the original issues. I bought this for myself, and liked it so much I bought one for a friend (she loves it, too). It just goes to show that vampire mania cycles in and out of American pop culture every few years!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Three StarsBy Ron M.Much too small!11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Collection!By IMHO TepFirst to the reviewers who commented here already-- are you kidding me?The size is listed in the description-- shame on you for not reading it. This was a GREAT book reprinting those black and white magazines Marvel put out in the 1970s, the paper is bright white and much higher quality than their Essentials line which is printed on newsprint. These reprint issues 1-3 of Vampire Tales, yes including all of the articles and great photo spreads from vampire movies from the 1920s up through the 70s-- it's a REPRINT folks-- it REPRINTS the issues in question-- I'd be disappointed if it didn't!These stories are moody and effective entries into the horror genre from a period when Marvel was stagnating with umpteen Spider-Man and X- Men titles.Featuring works by some of the great South American artists Marvel employed in the 70s as well as reprints of earlier horror tales by such masters as Carmine Infantino, John Romita (Sr) and more-- this was a really entertaining read and perfect for a cool fall night.Size wise it's digest-- a little bigger than a typical Manga collection-- but the work is beautifully reproduced. My only complaint is the cover-- very generic and not much thought given to an otherwise wonderful collection. Is it worth $20? No, but that's why I bought it on for $13.Can't wait for the second volume-- highest possible recommendation-- SC, TPB, in cello, New, Written by STEVE GERBER, RON GOULART, ROY THOMAS, DON MCGREGOR, GARDNER FOX and GERRY CONWAY. This book covers the company's final historical phase: the twilight years of the 1970s, after the initial '60s wave of popularity pushed them to the forefront of the comics industry, and made many of their characters household names. This full decade of pop-culture history saw Stan Lee's role as writer diminish as he ascended to Publisher, the stunning departure of Jack Kirby to DC (and later return to Marvel), the rise of Roy Thomas as editor (and eventual Editor In Chief), and the introduction of a new wave of writers and artists who would expand the boundaries of comics beyond super-heroes, while planting the seeds for the industry's eventual self-destruction. The Spider-Man "drug" issues, Conan the Barbarian, Tomb of Dracula, Master of Kung Fu, Howard the Duck, Star Wars, the new X-Men, and more are covered in detail-along with the creators who wrote and drew them, including Chris Claremont, Barry Windsor-Smith, Gene Colan, Marv Wolfman, Steve Gerber, John Romita, Gil Kane, Sal Buscema, and others. So don't be satisfied with only half the story! Check out Marvel Comics in the 1970s and find out why Marvel was once hailed as The House of Ideas! Milestones, which is curated by Milestone Media’s Michael Davis and co-curated by Tatiana EL-Khouri, offers patrons a full spectrum of Black historic contributions made throughout comic book and graphic novel history. The exhibit grew out of initial discussions between GEM President Melissa (Missy) Bowersox and Davis three years earli- er. They had lamented together the absence of a force like the late writer-editor Dwayne McDuffie, and together they seized on the idea of Milestones. “When Missy asked me to curate something, the easiest way to go was to do Milestones retrospective because Milestone has always been inclusive. I wanted to showcase established African American artists, but also the guys who came before us, including Don McGregor. • Adapting the Graphic Novel Format for Undergraduate Level Textbooks
ADAPTING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT FOR UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL TEXTBOOKS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian M. Kane, M.A. Graduate Program in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Professor Candace Stout, Advisor Professor Clayton Funk Professor Shari Savage Professor Arthur Efland Copyright by Brian M. Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching.
