Download 2005 Legacy Grants in PDF Format
Grants 1997 to 2004 Executive Director’s Message Welcome to Continuing the Legacy, which chronicles the first years of the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation. In this report, we would like to share with you some of the highlights of our initial grants and to give you a glimpse into the life of our founder and his family. Albert B. Alkek was an astute businessman and – as those fortunate enough to have met him know – possessed a charismatic personality. I admired him for being a man of clear vision and determination. With decades of experience in personal philanthropy, he knew exactly how he wanted to establish his legacy. 2 Mr. Alkek practiced strategic philanthropy. During his lifetime, he was a careful steward of his own fortune and carefully selected charitable organizations in the same way that he researched additions to his stock portfolio – by looking for the best return on his investment. When asked for money, he rarely agreed immediately, unless he already knew the organization’s leaders from previous business or social dealings. In those situations he could be very spontaneous with his gifts, sometimes dizzyingly so. He trusted his instincts. Personal relationships were key to Mr. Alkek’s philanthropic philosophy. His friendship with the world-renowned Dr. Michael DeBakey led to his involvement with Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions in the Texas Medical Center. Mr. Alkek’s admiration for the sacrifice and commitment of the Center’s doctors and leaders developed into close personal friendships. Sharing the entrepreneur’s spirit in pioneering ventures, these individuals described their dreams for the future and Mr. -

To the D.irector of the Bureau of Land Management NM State Office April 28, 2019 BLM, NMSO SANTA FE RECEIVED BLM New Mexico State Office APR,;~,5o 2019 Attention: State Director PAID RECEIPT # _ 301 Dinosaur Trail Santa Fe, NM 87508 We are writing to ask you to stop the proposed lease sale of lands near Chaco Canyon slated for June 2019. Fossil fuel exploration on these sites is a threat to the people who live on the surrounding land and to Chaco Canyon, New Mexico's crown jewel and the ancestral home of Native Americans of the Southwest. Protection from oil and gas activity around Chaco Canyon is essential to protecting New Mexico's uhique history, environment and vital resources. Instead of continuing to develop fossil fuels on our public lands, we need to make a just transition to renewable energy to create ways to engage in environmentally sustainable, as well as culturally appropriate, economic development. We ask you to cancel the lease sale of parcels: NM-201906-012-24; 26-46; 48-51 and NM-201906-025 & 47 to protect Chaco Canyon and the Greater Chaco Region from oil and gas activities that could destroy this designated World Heritage Site, a landmark like no other on Earth. Title: the Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher's Guide of 20Fh Century Physics
REPORT NSF GRANT #PHY-98143318 Title: The Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher’s Guide of 20fhCentury Physics DOE Patent Clearance Granted December 26,2000 Principal Investigator, Brian Schwartz, The American Physical Society 1 Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20740 301-209-3223 [email protected] BACKGROUND The American Physi a1 Society s part of its centennial celebration in March of 1999 decided to develop a timeline wall chart on the history of 20thcentury physics. This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government. -

An Open Letter on Behalf of Independent Schools of New England
An Open Letter on Behalf of Independent Schools of New England, We, the heads of independent schools, comprising 176 schools in the New England region, stand in solidarity with our students and with the families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The heart of our nation has been broken yet again by another mass shooting at an American school. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died and are grieving for the loss of life that occurred. We join with our colleagues in public, private, charter, independent, and faith-based schools demanding meaningful action to keep our students safe from gun violence on campuses and beyond. Many of our students, graduates, and families have joined the effort to ensure that this issue stays at the forefront of the national dialogue. We are all inspired by the students who have raised their voices to demand change. As school leaders we give our voices to this call for action. We come together out of compassion, responsibility, and our commitment to educate our children free of fear and violence. As school leaders, we pledge to do all in our power to keep our students safe. We call upon all elected representatives - each member of Congress, the President, and all others in positions of power at the governmental and private-sector level – to take action in making schools less vulnerable to violence, including sensible regulation of fi rearms. We are adding our voices to this dialogue as a demonstration to our students of our own commitment to doing better, to making their world safer. -
