17 any eagerly gathered into the Cathedral of Saint Patrick for the annual bilingual Mass and fi esta in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 2018, her feast day. This popular festivity celebrates both the Blessed Virgin, loving mother Mand powerful intercessor, and the culture that she communicated through. Attendees included many families, some dressed in traditional outfi ts. The music for the liturgy was provided by a mariachi band, and the Gospel, the account of the Annunciation, was proclaimed in both Spanish and English. Bishop Michael R. Cote served as the principal celebrant of the Mass, which was concelebrated by many priests of the diocese, including the homilist, the Rev. Juan Angel Aguirre of Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Windham. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to the poor farmer Saint Juan Diego in 1531, asking him to have a church built where she could hear the petitions of the Mexican people. She is credited with converting countless Aztecs to Catholicism, and today she is honored as both patroness of the Americas and patroness of life. Her famous words to Juan Diego were revisited as guests left the church: “Do not let anything worry you … Am I not here, she who is your Mother? Are you not
