UNIT 112 WHAT IS SOCIAL RESEARCH? 6 THE PURSUIT OF LAWS Another area of dispute in the social sciences has been between advocates of what are often termed nomothetic and idiographic approaches: between those who believe that social research is primarily concerned with discovering universal laws and those who regard its task as the production of knowledge about particu- lar situations (We came across this distinction in Section 4 when discussing the views of Max Weber.) The nomothetic approach is sometimes taken to be essential to scientific research. The goal here is often laws of the kind characteristic of physics whlch state invariant relationships among variables, for example Boyle's law claims that the volume of a gas in an enclosed space is inversely proportional to the pressure on it, given constant temperature. What are proposed are causal or functional relationships that hold universally, in all places and times where the conditions speckied in the law apply The social science discipline where the influence of the nomothetic approach has been strongest is psychology As we noted earlier, the foundations of modern experimental psychology were laid in the late nineteenth century in Germany A number of researchers, many of them trained in the natural sciences, sought to develop a scientific approach to understanding human perception and cognition. In setting up a form of psychology modelled on the natural sciences they came into direct conflict with the (at that time) much more prestigious discipline of his- tory which also regarded itself as concerned with human psychology, albeit the psychology of unique individuals - of the great figures of history. -

Gender, ritual Pouwer Jan and social formation Gender, ritual in West Papua and social formation A configurational analysis comparing Kamoro and Asmat Gender,in West Papua ritual and social Gender, ritual and social formation in West Papua in West ritual and social formation Gender, This study, based on a lifelong involvement with New Guinea, compares the formation in West Papua culture of the Kamoro (18,000 people) with that of their eastern neighbours, the Asmat (40,000), both living on the south coast of West Papua, Indonesia. The comparison, showing substantial differences as well as striking similarities, contributes to a deeper understanding of both cultures. Part I looks at Kamoro society and culture through the window of its ritual cycle, framed by gender. Part II widens the view, offering in a comparative fashion a more detailed analysis of the socio-political and cosmo-mythological setting of the Kamoro and the Asmat rituals. These are closely linked with their social formations: matrilineally oriented for the Kamoro, patrilineally for the Asmat. Next is a systematic comparison of the rituals. Kamoro culture revolves around cosmological connections, ritual and play, whereas the Asmat central focus is on warfare and headhunting. Because of this difference in cultural orientation, similar, even identical, ritual acts and myths differ in meaning. The comparison includes a cross-cultural, structural analysis of relevant myths. This publication is of interest to scholars and students in Oceanic studies and those drawn to the comparative study of cultures. Jan Pouwer (1924) started his career as a government anthropologist in West New Guinea in the 1950s and 1960s, with periods of intensive fieldwork, in particular among the Kamoro. -

Carol Polifroni Introduction A philosophy of science is a perspective—a lens, a way one views the world, and, in the case of advanced practice nurses, the viewpoint the nurse acts from in every encounter with a patient, family, or group. A person’s philosophy of science cre- ates the frame on a picture—a message that becomes a paradigm and a point of reference. Each individual’s philosophy of science will permit some things to be seen and cause others to be blocked. It allows people to be open to some thoughts and potentially keeps them closed to others. A philosophy will deem some ideas correct, others inconsistent, and some simply wrong. While philosophy of sci- ence is not meant to be viewed as a black or white proposition, it does provide perspectives that include some ideas and thoughts and, therefore, it must neces- sarily exclude others. The important key is to ensure that the ideas and thoughts within a given philosophy remain consistent with one another, rather than being in opposition. -

A Configurational Approach
RELATIONSHIP DETERMINANTS OF PERFORMANCE IN SERVICE TRIADS: A CONFIGURATIONAL APPROACH ANTONIOS KARATZAS University of Warwick MARK JOHNSON University of Warwick MARKO BASTL Marquette University The increasing popularity of service-based strategies among manufacturers, such as solution provision, makes service triads commonplace within busi- ness. While there is some consensus that “relational” (i.e., close or collabo- rative) relationships are beneficial for the performance of individual actors and the triad as a whole, there is little known about what exactly affects the service performance of an actor in these triads. In this study, we inves- tigate the influence of the manufacturer–service supplier relationship on the performance of the service supplier toward the manufacturer’s cus- tomers. As this phenomenon is causally complex and context dependent, we assume that there will be alternative configurations of relationship characteristics and contingent factors that lead to high service perfor- mance. To uncover potential configurations, we deployed fuzzy-set qualita- tive comparative analysis, on data collected from 38 triads within the network of a large Anglo-German commercial vehicle manufacturer. Our research shows that—in this context—superior service performance cannot be generalized to one relationship configuration and is also contingent upon exogenous factors—that is, contract support and service site size. We uncovered four “core” configurations of relationship dimensions and two exogenous factors. Three of the configurations exhibited relational proper- ties, while the fourth configuration had transactional properties. This is counter to extant research findings. We extend the perspective that within triads, service performance is not an outcome of a single “close,” or “col- laborative” relationship and is a combination of multiple configurations consisting of varying relationship dimensions and exogenous factors. -

The goal of this position paper is, by means of a thorough literature review, to contribute to demonstrating the urgency of using a sociological stance in a more complete understanding of the social, as well as of Sociology itself as a science. It is concluded that Sociology, a multi-paradigmatic science, seeks to articulate macro-social dynamics with local processes, allowing to connect the subjective significances with the practices, and which focus on the articulations between systems and actors, between structures and practices, between the reality of the social conditions of existence, and the social construction of reality. As an implication, Sociology as a scientific representation and practice of the social, can be cumbersome by helping to dismantle commonly shared preconceived ideas about the instituted social order. JALBERT THE CONTROVERSY AND DEBATE over the character of the relationship between the natural and human sciences (Natur- und Geisteswissenschaflen) became a central theme for philosophical reflection largely through the efforts of theo- rists such as Wilhelm Dilthey and the two principal representatives of the Baden School of Neo-Kantians, Wilhelm Windelband and Heinrich Rickert.~ These turn of the century theorists are major figures in this philosophical arena, but they are by no means the only participants in the effort to grapple with this issue.
