CAMPOS Much has been said and written about contemporary “indie” cinema in the Philippines. But what/who is “indie”? The catchphrase has been so frequently used to mean many and sometimes disparate ideas that it has become a confusing and, arguably, useless term. The paper attempts to problematize how the term “indie” has been used and defined by critics and commentators in the context of the Cinemalaya Film Congress, which is one of the important venues for articulating and evaluating the notion of “independence” in Philippine cinema. The congress is one of the components of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, whose founding coincides with and is partly responsible for the increase in production of full-length digital films since 2005. This paper examines the politics of naming the contemporary indie movement which I will discuss based on the transcripts of the congress proceedings and my firsthand experience as a rapporteur (2007- 2009) and panelist (2010) in the congress. Panel reports and final recommendations from 2005 to 2010 will be assessed vis-a-vis the indie films selected for the Cinemalaya competition and exhibition during the same period and the different critical frameworks which panelists have espoused and written about outside the congress proper. ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Mr. Estrada and at least one Cabinet official said the impending oil price increase, an expected P60- billion budget deficit, and the public opposition to amending the Constitution to allow unbridled foreign investments would make it a difficult time for the Estrada presidency.

    Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories.     INTERVIEW On Excavating the Paleocinema of Cebu: An Interview with Misha Boris Anissimov and Paul Douglas Grant Teddy Co April 1987 My discovery of Cebuano cinema began when I was working with my colleague, film historian and filmmaker Nick Deocampo, at the MOWELFUND Film Institute. Nick had launched a film magazine called Movement and asked me to contribute a piece on any subject concerning Philippine cinema. I was then involved in research at the institute and managed to acquire for its library bound sets of movie magazines published from 1935 to 1940, which I bought from pioneer movie publicist and later movie producer Luis F. Nolasco, who founded and edited some of the publications. The magazines bore names like Literary- Song-Movie, Philippine Movies and Radio, and Popular Movie News. The last was edited by journalist, fictionist, poet, and later screenwriter and film critic, T.D. Agcaoili, and in its September 1940 issue carried an article on early Cebuano attempts to set up a film industry in the province. Serendipitously, I discovered that the in-house photographer of MOWELFUND, Luis Chiong, had worked as a cinematographer during the fledgling days of the Cebuano film scene, from the late 1930s until the ‘50s. Chiong, then 67 years old, gave me a fascinating account of the beginnings of the film industry in Cebu. The information he shared with me eventually formed part of the article I contributed to Movement magazine entitled, “In Search of Philippine Regional Cinema” (1987), which gives a historical Plaridel • Vol. 14 No. 1 • January - June 2017 195-206 overview of regional filmmaking in the country and delves into the concept “regional cinema” as a paradigm for speaking of Philippine cinema.
