  • Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution
Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution Introduction In his poem, The Second Coming (1919), William Butler Yeats captured the moment we are now experiencing: Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. As we see the deterioration of the institutions created and fostered after the Second World War to create a climate in which peace and prosperity could flourish in Europe and beyond, it is important to understand the role played by diplomacy in securing the stability and strengthening the shared values of freedom and democracy that have marked this era for the nations of the world. It is most instructive to read the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy, in which he encouraged Americans not only to do good things for their own country, but to do good things in the world. The creation of the Peace Corps is an example of the kind of spirit that put young American volunteers into some of the poorest nations in an effort to improve the standard of living for people around the globe. We knew we were leaders; we knew that we had many political and economic and social advantages. There was an impetus to share this wealth. Generosity, not greed, was the motivation of that generation. Of course, this did not begin with Kennedy. It was preceded by the Marshall Plan, one of the only times in history that the conqueror decided to rebuild the country of the vanquished foe.

  • Art and Terror in Daniel Silva's Spy Novel the Kill Artist
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, August 2020, Vol. 10, No. 8, 676-681 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2020.08.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Art and Terror in Daniel Silva’s Spy Novel The Kill Artist Maria Antónia Lima University of Évora, Évora, Portugal; University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, Lisbon, Portugal The importance of Daniel Silva’s past, close to a Portuguese cultural environment, will be relevant to understand the psychological profile of his popular protagonist and central character, Gabriel Allon, a melancholic man haunted by his past, but also someone who is a gifted art restorer, very sensitive to the values of loyalty and fidelity, which the author assumed to have inherited from his Portuguese family. Being a spy and an art expert, Allon seems to conciliate two contradictory sides of the human personality. The connection between Portuguese and American culture, in this writer’s background, could have been responsible for the creation of a character who can be, at the same time, very sensitive and very violent; an assassin who is an Israeli secret agent and the world’s finest restorer of the Old Masters’ paintings. A perfect double who does justice to his creator’s double origin, which contributed to the success of The Kill Artist (2000), where terror is practiced as one of the fine arts by a hero very loyal and faithful to his complex cultural origins, living in a diaspora as the eternal wandering Jew. Keywords: Daniel Silva, art; terror, spy novel With more than 50 thousand books sold in Portugal, the bestseller writer Daniel Silva, an American Jew educated and raised by a Portuguese catholic family from Azores, is nowadays among the best of the youngest American spy novelists in the rankings of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other important American newspapers.

THE PAINTING AND SCULPTURE COLLECTION: A NEW PERSPECTIVE, opening at The Museum of Modern Art on March 14, brings the exhibition of the Museum collection up to date with new ground-floor galleries devoted solely to works executed since the middle 1950s. The Museum's unrivaled historical review of the modern masters and movements from Cezanne through Abstract Expressionism is presented in remodeled and newly installed galleries on the second and third floors. The expansion and redesigning of these galleries, carried out over a period of months by the present staff headed by William S. Rubin, Chief Curator of the Painting and Sculpture Collection, has been made possible in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from the New York State Council on the Arts. PARASHAT BERESHEIT - BIRKAT HAHODESH October 6, 2007 – 24 Tishrei 5768 Annual: Genesis 1:1 – 6:8 (Etz Hayim, p. 3; Hertz p. 2) Triennial Cycle: Genesis 1:1 – 2:3 (Etz Hayim, p. 3; Hertz p. 2) Haftarah: Isaiah 42:5 – 43:10 (Etz Hayim, p. 36; Hertz p. 21) Prepared by Rabbi Joyce Newmark Teaneck, New Jersey Torah Portion Summary The Torah begins with God’s creation of the world – light, heaven and earth, the oceans and dry land, the heavenly bodies, plants, animals, and finally the first human beings – in six days. God then blesses the seventh day, Shabbat, the day of rest. The human beings are placed in the Garden of Eden “to till it and tend it,” but when Adam and Eve disobey God’s commandment and eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil they are expelled from the Garden. Eve gives birth to two sons. When they are grown Cain, the elder, kills his brother, Abel, and is punished by God. Adam and Eve have a third son, Seth, and the Torah relates the 10 generations from Adam to Noah. The parasha concludes with God’s sorrow over human wickedness. 1. Does "Torah" Mean "Law"? When God began to create heaven and earth – the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water – God said “let there be light,” and there was light. (Bereisheit 1:1-3) A. Rabbi Yitzhak said: It was only necessary to begin the Torah with “This month shall mark for you...” (Shemot 12:2), for this is the first mitzvah about which Israel was commanded.

Previous research has shown that Jewish Orthodox Israelis are exposed to liberal Western ideals about romantic love and gender egalitarianism while continuing to uphold conservative family values. To gain insight into how leaders of Orthodox Jewish groups deal with these conflicting meaning systems, a representative sample of thirty guidebooks written for Re- ligious Zionist and Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel was analyzed by using a qualitative grounded theory analysis.
