Interview with Nelly White
What have you been doing up until now? NELLY: I signed a deal with Arpej Yapım in the autumn of 2017. I’d pretty much had a finished album when having talks with them, and I’d spent two years completing that to the mastering stage. I was working as musician in the evening, and in between my daily life found time to record the album. I have a growing family and that took up a lot of energy. I decided to concentrate my efforts on producing the music that I had been writing since my teens and through to today. An amazing bunch of musician friends came together and played on the album. Those brilliant people didn’t take any money for their efforts, as they had heard what kind of music we were producing, and they were just happy to be a part of it with us. I also worked with Engin Kaan Günaydın, drummer of The New York Gypsy All Stars, and internationally recognised group playing Turkish Jazz Fusion. Nelly White At the end of the recording process the group went to Istanbul and played in Nardis Jazz Club, as virtual unknowns, but we had an amazingly warm reception from Zuhal Focan, her team and the audience, and Zuhal was really ignited by our music. Along the way during the albums’ mixing process, our sound engineer happened to play some of the tracks to Genco Arı, who instantly picked up on the music. He loved the sound we were producing and offered to get involved. When I heard this I was over the moon, and I believe that his influence in the album and the direction he took the songs, really made a massive difference to the final production. -

I had been struggling for a long time with issues around professional development for educators. I felt, and still feel, a need to explore alternative approaches to promoting learning, particularly deep learning, in people who educate other people. There are numerous models in the field of professional development. Those that I have encountered, and in some cases designed for, seem to focus on delivering very specific information with the intention that the learner be able to do something very specific, e.g., assess phonemic awareness in a six year old; fill-out an IEP; “do” cooperative learning, …the list goes on. As there are a number of models; so there are a number of promoters and practitioners. By suggesting alternatives to prevalent models, I do not (necessarily) disagree with their efficacy. -

As with all reference works of this magnitude there are likely unintended errors in spite of diligent efforts to be error free; corrections are encouraged. If you are aware of any upgrades, know of additional tracks that should be included, or have comments about the information presented here please contact [email protected] or [email protected]. This collection was assembled based on information contained at Doug Bell's website, which is compiled from several reference sources: http://home.earthlink.net/~ldouglasbell/jimi.htm. Further details were obtained from Jimpress (2014-2015, From The Benjamin Franklin Studios, 4th edition): http://www.jimpress.co.uk/, Ultimate Hendrix (2009, Backbeat Books), Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book (2012, Backbeat Books), In From The Storm: http://infromthestorm.net/hendrix.html, and Discogs.com. All tracks are as they appear on their sources, though some sources are known to have utilized normalization, pitch correction, etc. A few tracks have had beginning/ending dead silence removed and are so noted, and track 127 has had a minor non-music patch. Four tracks are lossy and so noted. The track order is roughly from session takes to intermediate mixes to final and alternate mixes; complete versions precede incomplete versions. -

RAMSEY LEWIS NEA JAZZ MASTER (2007) Interviewee: Ramsey Lewis (May 27, 1935 - ) Interviewer: Anthony Brown with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: September 28-29, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 87 pp. Brown: Today is September 28th, 2011. This is the Smithsonian oral history interview with NEA Jazz Master Ramsey Lewis, pianist, composer, arranger, media personality, and entrepreneur, conducted in his home in Chicago. Good afternoon. Lewis: Good afternoon. How are you today? Brown: I’m fine. If we could just start by you stating your full name, your date of birth, and your place of birth. Lewis: Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. Chicago, Illinois. May 27, 1935. Brown: If you could tell us your parents’ names and any information about their background, where they were originally from. Lewis: My mom’s name is Pauline Lewis. She’s from around Jackson, Mississippi. Her family was born out in the county, but the closest city was Jackson. In fact her brother eventually opened a funeral home in Jackson, Mississippi. My dad is from Georgia. Once again – I heard him talk about Atlanta. I heard him talk about Macon. But I think once again that he was out in the county and never identified the exact place where he was born. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] Page | 1 They met in Chicago at church. Didn’t know each other, but ended up at the same church. -
Gunther Schuller Interviewed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich at Carnegie Hall on April 21, 1998
Library of Congress (Music Division) Gunther Schuller interviewed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich at Carnegie Hall on April 21, 1998. Part 2. Transcript of recorded interview: Gunther Schuller interviewed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich at Carnegie Hall on April 21, 1998. Part 2. From the Library of Congress in Washington DC. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich: Yeah, and it was…I think the rehearsal was in a little church somewhere and I get there and they’re doing…they’re doing Wagner. And they’ve got…I think they did have one horn and they had, they had somebody playing the piano, they had about five violins, they had one cello, I think one bass. And the, the guy who was conducting, who was totally, totally lost from the moment he picked up the stick, said, “We’re going to start with The Ride of the Valkyrie.” Well I had never played this before, but I looked at it, and I knew I couldn’t play it, so I faked it. You know, so there’s this total mess of sound and there’s one violin in the back going [sings]. And he said, “You, up here,” you know, so I was moved up to the front seat. And fortunately there was an intermission about ten minutes later and I put my violin in the case and walked out. I didn’t even say anything to anybody. I just couldn’t take it anymore. It was amazing how many of those there were and still are, these little outfits around New York that - Gunther Schuller: Yeah, I was amazed to find out the Amato Company still exists. -
