ROYAL CANOE CLUB K1/K2 MARATHON SUNDAY 2 nd MARCH 2008 (For details of race, start location etc see attached sheet.) SIGN IN: From 10.30 am at National Trust Car Park, Runnymede by French Brothers Boatyard . Note: Parking area for race will open at 9.00am See attached sheet BRIEFING: 11.30am START: 12.00 noon COURSE: Runnymede to Royal Canoe Club – Teddington Approx 19 miles (including SIX PORTAGES) CLASSES: Senior Men and Senior Women K1 Senior Men and Senior Women K2 Open Mixed K2 Open Junior Men and Junior Women K2 Open (Separate prizes for Vets in K1, K2 and Mixed Open) PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO JUNIOR K1 RACE IN THIS EVENT. COST: ALL ENTRY FEES TO BE PAID ON THE DAY £6.00 per seat for BCU Members. BCU Members should have with them their current BCU Thames Licence, issued as part of their BCU Membership. If you have not received your Licence then during the race you must carry with you your current Membership Card. There will be an additional charge of £3 if a current BCU Membership Card is not produced. This additional charge includes a Thames Licence. PLEASE NOTE: Ø Instructions given by Environment Agency Officers must be followed. Ø Safety must override any other consideration. Failure to give assistance to any competitor in need of help will result in disqualification. Ø Full consideration must be given to other towpath users at locks. Ø When entering Juniors K2’s please take into consideration the distance. Ø All boats must either have finished or pulled out before 16.00. Prize Giving will be between 15.00 and 15.30 Ø Although there is no ‘late booking charge, with all payments to be made ‘on the day’, please help the race organisers by sending in your entries prior to the event. Ø The organisers will be in contact with the Environment Agency prior to the event to check on river conditions. The organisers will take a final decision on THURSDAY 28 th February as to whether the race has to be cancelled or not; this is relevant if the river has been on RED ALERT during the previous week and flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency. The race will start near French Brothers Boatyard. The nearby National Trust Café is expected to open from 8.30am, serves an excellent breakfast and has toilet facilities. 2. Car parking for competitors will be on National Trust property, by the side of the boathouse. The National Trust requires that all vehicles must keep to the hard standing as much as possible especially if the ground is wet The car park is only available to the Royal K1/K2 race from 9am until just after the race starts. Cars cannot be left there all day; nor can they be left in the road leading to the river frontage. If you need to leave a car at Runnymede then please use the National Trust Car Park on the opposite side of the road and pay the appropriate parking fee. 3. If you are coming from Windsor you will need to turn left into the boatyard; the track leads down to French Brothers Boatyards and car parking will be on your right. (If you go past the two buildings at the start of Runnymede, you will have gone too far.) The opening for this turning is directly opposite the National Trust café. Any problems finding the start – telephone 079 909 644 92 4. If you are coming from the M25 then the start area will be on your right almost opposite the café. 5. Directions : Ø From M25 take Exit 13 and follow signs for Windsor and Runnymede A308 and turn right into the boatyard at the end of the Runnymede straight. Ø From Windsor – A308 for Runnymede and Egham. Turn left into the boatyard at the start of the Runnymede straight Ø Telephone number for Royal Canoe Club on race day – 020 8977 5254 Ø Royal Canoe Club is at Teddington. From Hampton Court follow the signs for Kingston. Turn left at the roundabout by Kingston Bridge. At the small roundabout below Kingston Bridge take the first turning left, approx 50 metres after the roundabout take a right hand fork into Lower Teddington Road. Continue until you see a recreation ground on your right. Immediately after the recreation ground turn right into Trowlock Way. It is signposted for Royal Canoe Club and The Skiff Club. You should be able to park either in Trowlock Way or in the public car park on the right. No charge for this. Ø The above is the most direct route, but if the traffic is heavy after you have left Hampton Court Roundabout and you are not driving a commercial vehicle, then you can go through Bushy Park. Turn into the park at the end of the row of shops on your left hand side. BE AWARE OF THE SPEED LIMIT THROUGH THE PARK. Turn right at the end, about half a mile, turn left into Vicarage Road, at the end turn left again, under the railway bridge, at the pedestrian crossing, turn right into Normansfield Road, turn left into Lower Teddington Road – directions to the club as above. If you miss Normansfield Road, any turning on the right will take you up to Lower Teddington Road/Broom Road. At that stage you will need to turn right. Ø The race will finish nearby the island site (make sure you attend the briefing to get the exact location). Boats should be taken out of the water on the mainland site. Ø Paddlers’ food provided. Food will also be available for purchase in the Mainland Clubhouse. Ø WE MUST ASK PADDLERS TO NOTE THAT THE RACE WILL CLOSE AT 15.30 PM. WE HOPE FOR A BRIGHT SUNNY DAY, BUT HAVE TO ALLOW FOR POTENTIALLY DARK AND OVERCAST CONDITIONS HENCE A FINISHING TIME IS SET FOR SAFETY REASONS. WE APPRECIATE THE DW GOES THROUGH THE NIGHT, BUT THAT IS A DIFFERENT RACE AND WE ARE GOVERNED BY DIFFERENT REGULATIONS.
