INDIANA EVANSVILLE, IN National High School Mock Trial — May 6-9, 2020, Evansville, IN 2020 “Mock Trial is the most critically demanding activity a high school student may undertake. It demands intelligence, creativity, acting skills, hard work, commitment to a team, and dedication. Students are given an opportunity to think, be authentically challenged. As Indiana’s program grows and flourishes, we will all see the inherent value and necessity of sustaining this program for our youth. I have already understood its significance in the lives and learning of my own students.”

—Teacher and three-year Coach

Indiana has secured the bid to host the National High School Mock Trial Championship in May 2020. This is Indiana’s opportunity to showcase the state and its outstanding high school mock trial program. Hosting this national championship will secure Indiana’s leadership in civic education nationwide. Mock trial educates youth on the legal system, particularly trial procedures, and highlights for them a fundamental tenet of the American justice system.

High School Mock Trial: the Best and the Brightest Through the interactive High School Mock Trial competition (Mock Trial), students learn the important role of the American judicial system and the rule of law in democratic society. They engage in simulated civil or criminal trials and compete against teams from across the U.S., South Korea, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. Guided by teachers, student teams practice for the academic competition by studying a fictitious case and take specific roles such as attorney, witness or defendant. Each team represents both defense and prosecution in alternating trials. Volunteer attorneys and judges evaluate their skills.

Mock Trial builds critical thinking, team work, public speaking and poise under pressure — exactly the soft skills needed in today’s workplace. Mock trial students are mastering them in high school. These students are some of the brightest students you will ever meet. Hyatt Place anticipates 'early spring' groundbreak

John Martin, Courier & Press Published 3:46 p.m

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The developer of a Hyatt Place in Downtown Evansville anticipates breaking ground in “early spring.”

Hemang Shah had hoped to have the project well underway by now, but issues related to underground utilities caused delays. The project's foundation had to be redesigned.

Then winter came, causing further postponement.

Shah said the remaining problems are settled now, and construction is ready to begin once the weather breaks. (Photo: Google Images) The project was announced in October 2016.

“It’s a process, like I said before,” Shah said Thursday. “The utilities, and all the other issues. When you’re doing something downtown, you never know. In this kind of big project, it’s always something. Not bad or good, just part of the process.”

The Hyatt Place is to be five floors and 139 rooms.

Shah said all financing for the construction is in place, and he pointed to investment that’s already been made to raze the Scottish Rite building and get the site on Southeast Second Street ready.

“The thing is, we demolished the building, the site is prepared,” Shah said. “We’ve already invested money in it. We can’t wait to start the construction and open the hotel.”

Construction will take 12-15 months from start to finish, Shah said.

Work on the former Riverhouse, meanwhile, continues at Walnut Street and Riverside Drive. That hotel is to be named The Mediterranean, with 76 rooms. The developer has said it is to open in 2018.

The new properties will join Hilton DoubleTree, and Le Merigot as hotel options in Downtown Evansville. Page 15 of 19
