Things to Do Recreation

Vineyards It wouldn’t be a visit to Sonoma County without wine tasting. Stop by the Fort Ross-Seaview Vineyard, California’s closest vineyard to the Pacif- ic Ocean and the first tasting room along the Sonoma Coast. The Vineyard describes itself as “a holy grail for those seeking out sui generis expressions of terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay… The vineyards cling to the steep ridges overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the very edge of the continent. The cool maritime climate slowly ripens the grapes and provides an ideal environment for the cultivation of cool climate grapes varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyards are few and the amount of wine produced in the region will always be limited as yields are modest and most of the terrain is too steep or difficult to farm. The quality of the wine produced from the grapes in this region is recognized internationally as being exceptional.”

Events Come for the annual Fort Ross-Seaview Wine and Harvest Festival in October. Enjoy “an incredible day of world-class wine tasting, delicious local foods, music and more, all set on the spectacular Sonoma Coast at Fort Ross State Historic Park.”

Sunday Morning Market “On Sunday mornings, weather permitting, the Fort Ross School hosts a little community market. Savor local honey, fruits and veggies in season, homemade tamales and spring rolls. There is always hot coffee, sweet treats and good conversation.” Fort Ross has numerous outdoor activities, including... • Fishing for abalone or rockfish from the shore or from kayaks • Hiking numerous trails, from gentle to strenuous…“that meander for miles through varied forest ecosystems or along the rugged coastline” • Exploring the “delicate tide pools thriving with colorful sea anemones and purple sea stars” • Walking the bluffs looking for harbor seals, Steller Sea Lions & California Sea Lions • Surfing • Bird watching • Visiting Sandy Cove Beach or another ocean access point • Enjoying a picnic • Wild mushroom hunting for Golden Chanterelles, Black Trumpets or Porcini • Walking across the San Andreas Fault

Diving Certified scuba divers can explore the wreck of the S.S. Pomona, a ship that sank more than 100 years ago and now sits in approximately 40 feet of water just off the cove.

Whale Watching “The excitement is contagious during whale season. Join others who head west to view the annual whale migration. Grey Whales migrate south between November and January to birth and return with their new calves between February and April. Look for the distinctive big blow, followed by the little blow of the young calf.”

Camping Enjoy 109 family campsites at Salt Point State Park with 30 ocean-side sites. Or check out Reef Campground’s 21 primitive sites.
