PROCEEDINGS OF THE “ CONFERENCE ON NIGERIAN PIDGIN ”, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA. 8-9 JULY, 2009 Some Lexico-Semantic Processes in Naija Macaulay MOWARIN , Delta State University, Abraka Department of English and Literary Studies March, 2010 Abstract This paper undertakes a lexico-semantic analysis of lexical inventory in Naija . Some of the lexico- semantic processes analyzed in it, with the aid of copious examples, include; polysemy calquing, syntactic paraphrase/circumlocution, compounding and reduplication. It observes that these processes are influenced mainly by substrate languages. The essay also discusses how these processes influence words borrowed from substrate languages. 1. Introduction The elaboration and creolization of Naija has resulted in an increase in the language’s vocabulary inventory to meet the communicative needs of its speakers. The increase in vocabulary inventory evolves from introduction of new lexemes and from the lexico-semantic processes in the language. This paper discusses some of the lexico-semantic processes found in the lexical inventory of Naija. The processes include: polysemy or multifunctionality, calquing, syntactic paraphrase/circumlocution, compounding and reduplication. The paper notes that linguists have always observed that a substantial number of Naija’s vocabulary is from its lexifier language-English. However, the substratum languages also contribute to the vocabulary inventory of the language since most of the lexico-semantic processes in Naija are derived from substrate languages 1. It discusses the effect of substratum influence on some of the lexico-semantic processes highlighted above. On the issue of substrate influence on Naija vocabulary inventory, Mafeni (1971:106) observes that: …although English has supplied the vast majority of the items that make up the Nigerian pidgin lexicon, the various substrates also supply vocabulary items (however few) as well as the more important processes by which the English loan-words are made to acquire new or additional meanings. -

Show in Lagos. Tradition and subjectivities: Warri-related comedians and their art Tanure Ojaide & Enajite Eseoghene Ojaruega Tradition and subjectivities: Warri-related comedians and their art By some coincidence, many Nigerian stand-up comedians were born, raised, live in, or are associated with Warri and its environs. By Warri, as understood in the area, we mean Warri and its surroundings and, to a large extent, what is called the ‘core Delta’ of Nigeria’s Delta State. The comedians include Gordons, I Go Dye, AY and Real Warri Pikin. We investigate what is possibly responsible for the natural talent of these comedians. We relate the success of these comedians to the notion of Warri as ‘not coming last’, the history of the city of many ethnicities, boma boys, the blues nature of suffering pain and deprivations but laughing them off, and some indigenous traditions such as the Urhoboudje oral poetic performance which aims to elicit laughter as a means of maintaining normalcy and preventing anybody from deviating from the communally-established norms. We use multiple concepts such as laughter as a means of regulating people’s lives, satire, historicism, culture, and aesthetic considerations to study these Warri-related comedians and their art. We investigate the commonalities, subjectivities, traditions, and individual talents that have made Warri-born, raised, resident, and related comedians so successful—not only in Nigeria, but also in Africa and the world. Keywords: tradition, subjectivities, performance, Warri, comedians. Introduction Coincidentally, many successful Nigerian stand-up comedians were born or raised in Warri and its environs. In this article we intend to interrogate the sociocultural background of four highly talented comedians whose artistic performances have made them stand out with their peculiar styles despite having features that can be said to be Warri-related: Gordons, I Go Dye, AY and Real Warri Pikin. -

This tradition of bunching together representationaL literature of such a large and diverse place is not only reflective of an underlying imperiaList gaze, but it aLso sets the stage for certain stories, landscapes, and even authors, to emerge as synecdoches for the entire continent. The downside of this phenomenon is that many of the spaces and stories that do not prove exceptionaL suffer a dearth of representation, and their distinctness thus goes unacknowLedged and unappreciated. This dissertation explores how the institutionaL authorities on African literature have historicaLLy shaped the fieLd using a barometer of spectacLe and charisma, and how this institutionaL backdrop constructs and reinforces a spectrum of African Landscapes, spaces, and stories that favors only the most exceptionaL objects. This project attends to those places on the African continent which faLL in the middle of this spectrum and as such are less likeLy to find literary or scholarly representation in African texts. ii This project positions the mediaL territory between these poles to excavate the presence and function of an ever-present Western gaze in gatekeeping the fieLd of African literature and scholarship. -

The Rising Profile of Naija Literary Discourse and Entertainment in Nigeria
PROCEEDINGS OF THE “ CONFERENCE ON NIGERIAN PIDGIN ”, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA. 8-9 JULY, 2009 The rising profile of Naija literary discourse and entertainment in Nigeria Macaulay MOWARIN , Delta State University, Abraka Department of English and Literary Studies March, 2010 Abstract Due to the vibrancy and elaboration if Naija within the pas two decades, its domain of use has increased both as an informal and formal means of communication. This paper undertakes an analysis of the use of Naija in literary discourse and entertainment. It discusses the use of Naija by illiterates, marginally literates and elites, who use the language in a relaxed informal setting, in the novels of Achebe set in urban centres. It observes that Achebe’s deployment of Naija in his novels is a rhetorical device. The paper also analyzes Ezenwa Ohaeto’s poem in Naija titled “I Wan Bi President” with the main aim of comparing the sociolect in the poem with that of the standard sociolect. The paper observes that the use of Naija in the entertainment industry is growing rapidly; it however observes the predominant cases of code-mixing and code switching of English and Naija in the industry. Finally, the paper also observes the use of the acrolectal sociolect by musicians, comedians and characters in Nollywood (Nigerian firm industry). 1. Introduction The use of Naija in literature and entertainment in Nigeria has spanned half a century. Although it is a recent development, the use of Naija by characters in the fast expanding Nigerian film industry known as Nollywood has a close affinity to those characters who speak the language in novels and plays.
