From my hometown of Baltimore I listened to WCAO radio Top 40 hits, and watched The Buddy Deane Dance Party every day after school. My early musical heroes were Dion, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Little Eva, Ray Charles, Chubby Checker, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, The Four Tops and, Stevie Wonder…. My parents were also music fans.     B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7.

Highly regarded for its emphasis on traditional music and dance, this festival is only in its third year but is already one Interview: of the largest Scottish events in the state. Games chief John Lowry and his wife Nellie are the force Liz Carroll behind the rapid success of the Seaside games. Lowry says that the festival was created partly because there was an absence of Scottish events in the region and partly to fill the void that was created when another long-standing festival PLUS: was forced to move from the fall to the spring. With its spacious grounds and variety of activities, the LookAround Seaside festival provides a great opportunity for first-time Highland games visitors who want to experience it all. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

Their laser show, which many rock groups have begun to use in the past few years, complimented the music nicely as did the fantastic light show. The band, as a whole, worked very well together, which is under- standable considering most of the members have been together for ten years. Merwin, "The Life Cycle of Common Man" When people think of paradise, thoughts of harps usually come along for the ride, but the harps most people conjure have strings, not little holes, and the paradise they imagine isn't the one in Butte County. Harps with holes and Butte County's Paradise hook up in the person of Norton Buffalo, a Ridge homeboy, musician, songwriter and world-renowned harmonica virtuoso. You might have stood behind Buffalo in the checkout line at Safeway, or at the bank, without knowing that the man ahead of you has played and sung with many of the major music stars of the past three decades. Commander Cody, the Doobie Brothers, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Judy Collins, Olivia Newton-John, Juice Newton, Kenny Loggins, Marshall Tucker, Pablo Cruise, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jackson Brown, and Vassar Clements are just a few of the musicians who've had their sounds augmented by Buffalo. As Elvin Bishop, his friend and fellow musician, says: "Anybody who can make a living doing something they enjoy is way ahead of the game." Buffalo dropped out of college to commit himself to his music, and, for that faith in his dreams, he got the world.
