Seems that Friday night before Carolyn’s PWF gig she had finished her show at the Zoo Bar and was trying to leave but the Police were somehow blocking the alley exit. What does Carolyn do? She pulls off some acoustic set in the alley until 3 in the morning. I was not there (dammit) but I’m told tears were shed during that performance… Here is an exurb from Josh Hoyer’s Face book page that sums Carolyn Wonderland up perfectly! THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 6, July 2010 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Deb Lubin The period since the last newsletter was published was very busy, with planning for upcoming blues society events, going out to hear our favorite local blues bands, and our annual pilgrimage to Memphis in May for the Blues Music Awards. The BMAs are a wonderful event that all blues lovers should attend at least once. This year in Memphis, we got to see many of our favorite musicians from the Bay Area, among them Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, including Kid Andersen; the entire Tommy Castro Band, which took home several awards; Laura Chavez and Kennan Shaw from Candye Kane's band; Maria Muldaur, and others with Bay Area ties. I had so much fun reconnecting with old friends both on and off the stage. Meanwhile, the GGBS is rolling. We're getting ready for several big events that we're either sponsoring, partnering with, or supporting, including the 5th annual Redwood City Blues Festival in July, the first U.S. events of the European-based charity United by Music , the San Jose Jazz Festival in August, and events to select a member band to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011, among others. Please look for information about all of these events in this issue of the newsletter. In addition, East Bay musician/cat lover/pre-war blues specialist Joel Fritz reviews four CDs by local bands. SF-based singer Cathy Lemons reviews E.C.

Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.
