Shippensburg University shapes its athletic program to fit within the overall academic goals of the university—maintaining a balance between athletics and academics. Since 1984, the university’s Office of Institutional Research has moni- tored the progress of our athletes in the classroom. The original study found that Shippensburg was ahead of many institutions in meeting the standards of Propositions 48 and 64—two NCAA resolutions designed to set minimum educational levels in collegiate athletes. Proposition 64 of the NCAA established a minimum score of 700 in the SAT and a 2.0 grade point average in 11 core curriculum courses in high school. Proposition 48 carries these minimums even further and outlines availability of scholarships to freshmen athletes based on their school performance. Incoming freshmen athletes show preparation levels comparable to those of all incoming students. In 2006, the average SAT score for incoming freshmen athletes was 1006, only slightly below the SAT average for new incoming students of 1015. Both groups average in the upper two-fifths of their graduating high school classes. Today Shippensburg University athletes continue to uphold the study’s findings. The quality point average (QPA) for all athletic teams in 2006- 07 was 2.67 on a 4.0 scale. The 10 women’s teams had a 2.93 overall average while the eight men’s teams averaged 2.82. This can be compared to the fall 2006 figures: the total student body QPA averaged 2.82, fe- males were slightly higher at 2.98, and males were slightly lower at 2.66. Shippensburg’s athletes continue to show high six-year graduation rates. Since 1975, 43 athletes have earned Academic All-America honors and Seventy-one percent of those receiving athletically related financial aid three athletes have earned NCAA Postgraduate scholarships. Many more graduate within six years of enrolling. 34 Shippensburg University History

The softball team was organized in 1978 and since that time the Lady Raiders have won 744 games and over 70 percent of their games. The team has won 20 or more games in 20 of the last 21 years, including 90 wins in 2004 and 2005. The 1982 team was one of the best in Shippensburg softball history. Led by All- American pitcher Sharon Boyd, the Lady Raiders finished second in the nation in the AIAW Division II national championship tournament. The team finished second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) that year. The Lady Raiders competed in the NCAA Division II tournament in 1987 and were defeated by Mankato State in the regional tourney. One of the highlights of the season was a perfect game by Shelly Kramer against Clarion. Kim Bedford led the offense with a .430 average and a university-record nine home runs. In 1991 Shippensburg won 30 games for the first time and raised the record the next year to 33 Lady Raider wins. Shippensburg finished second in the Mid-Atlantic Region, with outfielder Michelle Borzok earning second team All-American honors. Alex Spak was a second team All-American for the Lady Raiders in 1993. She set the Lady Raider records for strikeouts in a season with 126 and a career with 343. Teammates Krista Miller and Deana Heinbaugh were first team Academic All- American. The 1995 team finished with a season record of 42-15 overall, setting a new record for wins in a season. Kathy Hallowell started the season by winning her first 10 games en route to a 15-3 mark. Annette Hunt set a university record for hits in a season with 66. The Lady Raiders finished the regular season tied for second in the PSAC East. In 1997, Shippensburg finished second in both the PSAC and the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region tournament behind the eventual national champion. The Lady Raiders were led by pitcher Andrea Smith, who broke Boyd’s record for wins in a season by taking 27. Seven starting players hit better than .300 that year includ- ing first baseman Heather Bankert, who led the team with a .413 average, and Tracy Starke, who hit .345. More success followed in 1998. The Lady Raiders compiled a 41-8 record and won the PSAC Eastern Division title. The team finished second in the PSAC tourna- ment behind the eventual national champion. Bobby Davis was named PSAC East Coach of the Year and Smith equaled her record of 27 wins. In 1999, Shippensburg finished second in the PSAC tournament for the third year in a row. The Lady Raiders got off to a slow start but finished with a flourish, win- ning 15 of 16 games from April 10 to May 7. Katie Rowlands led the hitting attack with seven homers, 52 RBI, and a .420 batting average. Andrea Smith led the pitch- ing staff with a 22-8 record. In 2001, Bob Brookens replaced the retired Bobby Davis as head coach. He has led Shippensburg to new heights under his tenure. In 2003 and 2004, Shippensburg won back-to-back PSAC Championships and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Cham- pionships. The Lady Raiders finished fifth in the country in 2003 with a 37-14 record. In 2004, Kelley Tiesi was named Division II Softball Player of the Year, and has since broken nearly every pitching record at Shippensburg since posting 30-2 in '04. Liz Corr, Jaime Dacey and Brenna Eck each earned third-team All-America honors for a squad that went 48-6, captured the PSAC title and made an finished the season No. 3 in the nation. The success continued in 2005, as the Lady Raiders won a third-straight PSAC crown, and advanced to the NCAA tournament for a fourth consecutive season. Dacey led the nation in hitting with a .549 average, leading the team to the most prolific offensive season in the school's history. Five players batted over .400, and seven athletes were honored on the All-PSAC Eastern Division team. Dacey was the Athlete of the Year and freshman pitcher Dani Shields was the rookie of the year. Dacey, Tiesi, Corr, and Sarah Costa were named All-Americans.

34 Shippensburg University Lady Raiders Softball 35 Robb Field

Shippensburg University has outstanding facilities for women’s sports. The field at the Robb Sports Complex, Robb Field, is the home of the Lady Raiders softball team. The softball diamond has a permanent home run fence. The dimensions of Robb Field are 200 feet down the lines, 220 feet to center field and 200 feet to the power alleys. There is a ten-foot warning track before the outfield fence. Bullpen practice areas have been recently renovated and are available behind the outfield fence. The dugouts are enclosed above ground and feature benches that have been newly carpeted. The team has also installed artificial turf inside its outdoor batting cages that are located beyond the left field fence. The playing surface is an imported bluegrass that is maintained year round by a steadfast team of Shippensburg maintenance workers. Robb Field, which was opened in the spring of 1934, has bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators for field hockey and lacrosse. The Robb softball diamond has seating for 300 with additional room at special occasions for bleacher seating beyond the left-field wall. The facility is completely enclosed by a chain-link fence. The venue is a premiere site for tournament competition, as the PIAA Softball Championships are held at the venue each year with an average attendance of over 1,000 people. Shippensburg has hosted the championships annually since 1978 with the exceptions of three years (1989, 1993, 1994). Shippensburg has also hosted the NCAA Division II Mid- Atlantic Region Softball Championships from 2003-06 as well as the 2005 PSAC Championships from Robb Field. The Robb Sports Complex also served as home of the football, track, and soccer teams until 1971.
