Working to improve the quality of life for disabled children, young people and their families in Derby City and Southern Derbyshire September 2017 Bulletin Summer Fun! We have been busy engaging in new areas of the community with our summer holiday events which we hope you will agree have been fantastic! Cookstars came along to our event in Sawley on 31st July, 27 children and young people attended. They cooked yummy pizza pies and rock buns, and had a great time whilst parents and carers chatted together and with our family support team. We also held an event in Ashbourne attended by Bugs ‘n’ Bones who brought along their fluffy, slimy and scaly creatures! All 21 children and young people enjoyed holding these interesting creatures and were excited to see them so close up! We then had themed crafts and made some of our own creatures! A great time was had by all! The holidays are nearly over. For some children/young people, this will be an exciting time of new beginnings. For others it will be an anxious time of change. Parents may have mixed emotions; gladness the holiday is over so that normal routines can resume, but sadness as little ones start school, or young adults move on to college. However you are feeling this September, come along to one of the Umbrella support groups, meet friends, have a chat, pick up information and enjoy a cuppa. For more information see the Family Support Groups on page 5 inside. What’s happening at Umbrella Adult Services This month the INDE group decided to hold their very own summer fair at Umbrella house. The group made cakes, and organised games which included a Bran Tub, message in a straw and pin the tail on the donkey. After a BBQ in the lovely sunshine. Katie our fabulous volunteer opened the fair. We all had great fun on the different stalls. Children’s Services This month the children enjoyed a Superhero picnic at Umbrella house. It was a fun day of games, crafts and dressing up. The group made their own Superhero puppets, Spiderman cupcakes and of course, dressed up as their favourite superheroes or villains. We all had a fabulous time! Volunteer Services When NCS came to visit Umbrella NCS stands for National Citizen Service, the program supports young people from 15-17 years old to embark on challenges to make their mark on communities, build on life skills and encourage making friends. Team 3 completed some exciting events to fundraise for us; a pub quiz at The Broadway in Allestree and some yummy cakes were also sold at The Hollybrook in Heatheron Village to name but a few. Some of the money was used to purchase garden equipment. Umbrella now has some lovely outdoor pillows, summer plants and bright fences—keep a look out for Sid the snail! The remaining £157.09p will go directly to Umbrella. Donations such as this are so valuable to us as we aim to raise £55,000 a year to continue to provide and improve our much needed services. From everyone at Umbrella we would like to thank everyone who supported and gave generously. And a of course a special thanks Check out our website www.umbrella.uk.net What’s happening in Play and Leisure Umbrella Family Trip to Blackpool Zoo & Illuminations October Half term 25th October 2017 We are planning a fantastic family trip to visit Blackpool Zoo followed by a drive through the famous Blackpool Illuminations.
