Vaya Bags, made inside a mod- est store in Ridgewood, are con- structed using leftover materials found at a sailboat awning manu- facturer and area bike shops. Photo by Nicole Guglielmo

BY TAMMY SCILEPPI

At a time when small businesses aren’t thriving, a young store owner, who lives in Ridgewood with her husband and three cats, bravely maintains her “I think I can” atti- tude. In the workshop of her small Ridgewood storefront, at 70-08 60th St., which opened in March 2010, Tianna Meilinger teams up with her staff of two good friends, Grace Kim and Angie Boy- lan, to craft hip, one-of-a-kind messenger bags out of, well, garbage. Actually, from recycled materi- als, like sailboat canvas scraps and old bicycle tubing, combined with rugged industrial textiles. The result is a stylish custom bag designed to withstand everyday abuse. “The great part about Vaya Bags is that they are all individually handmade — making them all unique.” They’ve become popular with teens, col- lege kids and bike messengers; even office execs and moms, who can use them as diaper bags. A cycling enthusiast and Boston University en- vironmental science major, Meilinger first thought, “Oh, I’ll make bags until I find a real job in my field,” but she just kept making them, and soon it became her occupation. A hobby morphed into a small busi- ness, and her fierce drive and moxie finally paid off. Thinking out-of-the-box, the designer made her first messenger bag in 2005, while studying and work- ing in Boston. It was her “Aha!” moment: “I was riding Tianna Meilinger learned how my bike to and from school and work, and desperately to saw from her father, who needed a sturdy, functional bag; instead of buying one, I is a leather craftsman. decided to make myself one.” Photo by Orlando Perez Continued on Page 19 SE TIMESLEDGER, FEB. 2-8, 2012 TIMESLEDGER.COM 18 Cops walk the beat, medics in the service. phones atswer acar the women an- Desi young two bars, 3a.m. and p.m. 10 between place takes action the late: up that worldthe being and comes from living just trouble the it seems times in that part of Some- trouble. of form some in all orforfor ill. good be like before it was Disney-ifed, to used Square you ofwhat Times reminds result The er denizens. transvestites, bar owners and oth- of interviews with EMT workers, area. the spoken in es ferring tothe number of languag- 167, re- Theatre called actors and writers of ensemble an by written it was Kreith, Laura Ari director places on diverse most oneofthe earth.Queens, Conceivedfractious, of this loveto quirky, letter funny by multifarious region of ‘Jackson Heights 3AM:’ Ashowcase of diversity Transvestites dance at seedy at seedy dance Transvestites The people in the play are ofyears result the playis The “Jackson Heights 3AM: is a BY MCKANIC ARLENE and the other sleepless medical medical sleepless other the and and by buying sandwiches for her herplay Lotto by helping down charan Guilarte), who calms her Ram- (Andrew Salim gentle the with adeli in herself finds Soma couplethew (Nick of Fehlinger, in roles) one of a Mat- herboyfriend because upset is moving who’s Hospital, ident at Elmhurst away.Soma Senanayake), (Indika a res- card. acredit finds Misha amoment chaos of during Story.” nomoney, have They but “West Tony Side and in Maria awayto run to somewhere, like want ofthem two the gorny), and in love with Mikhail (Sergey Na- She’s Perez.
