Message from James Kozlowski – Principal

The Principal’s Year in Review - 2017

Dear Endeavour Family

We end 2017 being able to reflect on a year where the successes exceeded even the most ambitious objectives.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Our commitment to academic excellence has been rewarded with some very impressive results, including our best NAPLAN scores on record. Our junior extension class program was expanded to accommodate this culture of success and we saw this desire for academic excellence filter throughout the year groups.

QUALITY TEACHING

We are endowed with a highly skilled and talented staff who are dedicated to adopting best practice. This means having a commitment to school wide professional learning that utilises the very best in global research. To put it simply, we have taken what works best for student achievement and delivered it in the classroom.

I am particularly proud of the partnership we developed with the University of Technology this year in the teaching of mathematics. Under the inspirational leadership of our Head of Maths, Craig Marland, our dedicated maths faculty adopted university developed teaching strategies designed to heighten student engagement in maths.

STEM

For years our society has been negligent in encouraging students into science, technology, engineering and maths. Not at Endeavour. We have developed a richly resourced STEM program that is exposing students to innovative practices such as coding, robotics and 3D printing. We aim to develop a love of these subjects and produce the pioneers of the future.

ENDEAVOUR, THE PLACE TO BE

The Year began with our largest Year 7 cohort for many years, with 177 students joining us, a 100% increase on 2014. Overall our school population has grown by close to 18% in just the last couple of years. We are now a school where demand for places is significantly outstripping supply, affording us the luxury of being highly selective about the applications we accept. Our 2018 Year 7 is on track to be an equally large cohort, despite the fact that we have declined over 30% of applications on academic grounds.

A SCHOOL CULTURE OF SUCCESS

To deliver excellence you must produce a culture that strives for it. It starts with a strategic plan that sets ambitious targets and then implements strategies that establish and support high expectations.

We want to be the best in the classroom, on the sporting field and in other valuable pursuits. Over the last three-year planning cycle, we have expected more, and delivered more.

We will strive for success and celebrate our students and staff when it is achieved. We are so proud of our zone debating champions, winning science students, distinguished mathematicians and historians, our chess competitors and reading challenge victors.

AN AWARD WINNING SCHOOL

This year we received two very special awards in recognition of our achievements. Earlier in the year we received the 2017 Schools Excellence Award for VET. This is a tribute to Fiona Murphy and her fantastic team of teachers and students. More recently the Department of Education conferred upon us the Ultimo Directorate Award for Significant Achievement as a School. This highly prestigious award is recognition of all that we have achieved over the past three years.

SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS

We have partnered with the very best to become the very best.

We have a highly impressive list of partners that is unmatched anywhere in Australia.

Our university links mean that we are undertaking ground breaking research and utilising innovative practices.

OUR TARGETED SPORTS PROGRAM

What a fantastic year it has been for our Targeted Sports Program with every one of our TSPs growing in quantity and quality of student athletes. Of particular significance was the achievement of our female athletes winning state competitions in tennis and cheerleading, and being state runners-up in basketball, netball and futsal. We also had female state representatives in football, hockey, athletics and netball. Special mention is warranted of Ky-Mani Schwenke who made the Australian netball team, and Alexandra Tims who played for the 6ers.

ENDEAVOUR IN THE MEDIA

No other Australian school has been so prominent in the mainstream media over the past two years. We have been the subject of two Sydney Morning Herald, three Daily Telegraph and several local paper articles, plus a Fox Sports documentary.

We have the most popular Facebook page of any school in the Sutherland Shire and beyond, and this year we launched a new and unique website to better reflect our achievements.

OUR PRIMARY FRIENDS

2017 has been another successful year in fortifying relationships with our local primary schools. We have collaborated with Taren Point, Sans Souci, Caringbah North, Miranda North and Laguna Street for several events including White Ribbon, sport carnivals, mural painting and a reading program. We have also hosted highly successful ‘High School for a Day’ experiences for our primary friends. The result, I believe, is the creation of a community of schools that has enhanced and celebrated one another’s achievements.

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS

We will look back on 2017 as a seminal year for our creative and performing arts. The prodigious talent of our dancers, musicians, actors and artists were on full display at our auspicious Performing Arts Showcase. Joining them was our newly created, competition winning, TSP Cheerleaders. I am confident that our creative and performing arts will continue to flourish over the coming years.

THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

The construction of a brand new administration building and bus bay, surrounded by impressive landscaping, has begun. Our Endeavour café deck has had an indoor component added to it, and we hope to have a sail shelter installed early next year. This area has become a real focal point for entertaining and learning. We also hope to announce very shortly the approval to construct a state-of-the-art cricket net facility that will also support a batting cage for baseball.

FAREWELL & THANK YOU

Sadly, we must farewell some much loved staff members this year. Earlier in the year we said goodbye to Ms Kapsimalis who was promoted to Principal at . Sonia May has decided on a change of state and joins the Queensland education system. Both Pat Roditis and Lee Flanagan have brought their distinguished careers to an end. Daniel Moller takes up a permanent position closer to home and Joanne Robson leaves us after having dedicated several years to our technology needs. From our amazing administration staff we lose Michelle Partlic, who moves closer to home in Shell Harbour. Thank you all for giving your heart and soul to our school. We wish you every success in the future. A special word must go to the inimitable Ross Dummett. Ross has decided that five years of driving more than an hour and a half each way has become too much, and he will now become the deputy principal of a collegiate of schools 5 minutes from his wife and three young daughters. Ross and I have had a highly successful and enjoyable partnership for three years, working shoulder-to-shoulder together to lead a school we love. I know that I and most of you will miss him greatly. Thank you for everything, Ross.

I want to publicly acknowledge and thank our entire staff. We have been blessed with exceptional deputies – Sophie, Ross and Lenore. I can confidently say that after only one term at the school I know that our new DP, Jocelyn Gooch, was an inspired choice and I am so excited to be working with her during the next stage of the Endeavour journey.

I also need to thank our supportive and motivated executive, highly talented and dedicated teachers and the best administration staff on the planet. Great schools run on a lot of goodwill from staff, and my staff deliver this in spades.

Thank you also to our fantastic parents who are our greatest advocates.

A FINAL MESSAGE TO OUR STUDENTS

I’d like to finish with a final message to our wonderful students. All that we do here is for you. Every day we strive to provide you with an outstanding learning environment. There is something very special about Endeavour, a unique quality that only those who step inside our gates can understand.

It is a privilege and an honour to be your principal. I hope you regard being a student of Endeavour with a similar reverence.

We have had a fantastic 2017 but I am already focused on the opportunities and success that await us in 2018.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. HOME James Kozlowski Principal

Message from Jocelyn Gooch – Deputy Principal

It is hard to believe that the end of the year has arrived so quickly. Each year’s end brings with it a tremendous sense of accomplishment and so many things have been accomplished at Endeavour Sports High School this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the school community who have made me feel so welcome. It has been a pleasure to meet so many students and their families already, particularly in what has been a very busy term. In learning about the school, I have looked back at the photos, reports and the School’s Facebook page and I feel incredibly proud to have joined a community that works so hard to offer so many rich learning and sporting experiences. The participation of our students in such a diverse learning community has ensured continuing academic success, as well as outstanding achievements in the sporting arena.

This term has been a time for student learning and achievements to be recognised through the various assemblies including the TSP and Presentation Day, not to mention the Mind over Matter performance evening which saw an amazing display of talent and the Endeavour Sports “family” atmosphere. All of these occasions focused on publically recognising the outstanding achievements, skills and talents of our students and the limitless ability of our teaching staff to nurture and inspire. These events are a wonderful opportunity for our new Student Leadership team to support the school and their peers. Our school has a vibrant school culture, characterised by students' deep engagement in their learning activities, and strong sense of pride and belonging to the school.

As we continue busily preparing for our new group of Year 7 students, I would like to welcome Ms Jessop as Year 7 Coordinator for 2018 and Mr Briscoe as the Assistant Year 7 Coordinator. I know that the students of Endeavour Sports High School will join with the staff and be friendly and welcoming when they see these new faces.

Students, parents and carers are encouraged to raise any issues of concern with the Year Coordinators early in 2018, or with the Head Teacher Welfare, Mrs Bradley. Students can also make an appointment with the school counsellors. Our Student Support programs are extensive and inclusive. They are designed to meet student needs and ensure all students maximise their learning.

I feel very fortunate to not only work with talented staff but also with an inspirational senior executive team led by Mr Kozlowski. I would like to wish Mr Dummett best wishes for his future role, although I have only worked with him a short time his knowledge, humour and energy will be missed by all. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Blades for sharing the Deputy Principal role, her leadership has been an integral part of a cohesive team. The end of each academic year is always a time for reflection. Time for students and their parents to reflect on what has been achieved this year. Time to examine academic reports and see where improvements can be made. I wish our entire school community a restful and safe holiday season. This is a time to be thankful for the things we have, and to focus on the future.

Message from Ross Dummett – Deputy Principal

2017 has been an amazing year for Endeavour Sports High School. Let’s just think about the amazing things we have accomplished.

We have enrolled another large Year 7 group for 2018 while at the same time significantly increasing the standard for entry to Endeavour. We have seen the promotion of some very good people and obtained the services of staff members who have the ability to lead Endeavour through the next three years of the school plan. We were recognised for our outstanding success by being awarded High School of the Year for the Ultimo region. We were head hunted by Toyota to develop and introduce a STEM program across our school for the next four years. We have developed strong links with Sydney University, both in and out of the classroom, and employed a full time Strength and Conditioning coach to ensure that our TSP athletes are in peak physical condition. In 2017 Endeavour Sports High received the best NAPLAN results in over eight years and we are expecting similar results from the HSC. When you sit back and reflect on that, it is very impressive.

Recently we had our Creative Arts Showcase evening. It was a tremendous honour to be a part of this and I thought everyone involved did a wonderful job. It was great watching it from the back of the stage and seeing staff and students all working together to achieve a common goal. I have seen this before; it was at the 2014 GIO Cup final. Well done to Miss K who had the vision, foresight and drive to ensure that we got this job done.

Endeavour has a very bright future and I look forward to watching from afar the growth and journey the school continues to go on when I am gone.

I would like to take this time to thank all staff, students and parents that I have worked with for the past five years. When I first started at Endeavour, Sophie Kapsimalis told me that this was a great school to work at and that I would really enjoy it. She was right. People sometimes ask me how I cope with the travel. Sometimes it will take me over two hours to get home. I respond very quickly that I love my job and the school I work at.

If I do not speak to you before the Christmas break please have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

STEM for Term 4 has focussed on coding with the OZOBOT robot resources. Learning modules have been developed for the Science, Maths, English and History/Geography faculties and have been delivered to the majority of classes from Year 7 to Year 10 in addition to lessons for our Special Education unit.

Each lesson has been tailored to show how the OZOBOT robot can assist teaching and learning in each of these subjects and links the content and student team work to real life situations, one of the main goals of our STEM program. These outcomes help develop student appreciation of the relevance between subjects, and help develop practical team and management skills that the students can utilise in their life after school.

The lessons have proven to be extremely engaging for our students and teachers and we look forward to expanding them in 2018. Some of our Year 10 students (right) using the OZOBOT to calculate probability distributions in our OZOBOT in Mathematics lesson

Our First League Lego Robotics team of Brenden Burbidge, Nicholas Verteouris and Mohammad Khaled in action (left)

Students from our Year 7 and Year 8 classes participated in the First League Lego Robotics regional championship as part of our STEM program in Term 4. This was the first time Endeavour Sports High School has participated in the event which is held in over 80 countries as part of a global championship. The object of the competition was to design and program a robot to complete several challenges with a common theme of hydrodynamics and water usage. The team was judged on their robot’s performance, design, programming, core team values and their research on water conservation. Although we did not manage to win the competition we managed to hold onto 5th place out of 12 competitors for most of the competition. For the students to reach the standard they did on the day is of great credit to their efforts and enthusiasm, especially considering they had no prior knowledge of robotics or programming at the beginning of the term.

EXTENSION CLASS

Term 4 has seen a number of achievements and new competition opportunities for students in the extension classes as well as a second Gifted Education workshop for our Extension class teachers.

COMPETITIONS & EXTENSION INITIATIVES

Stem Lego Robotics Competition

As part of our STEM program, three of our students recently took part in the First League Lego Robotics Championship at Laguna St Public School. This was the first time Endeavour has entered the competition and we were represented by Brenden Burbidge, Mohammad Khaled and Nicholas Verteouris with Mr Tindall acting as coach.

The team began training for the competition at the beginning of Term 4 with almost no knowledge of robotics or programming and so to reach the standard that they did on the day is an absolute credit to them. Brenden, Mohammad and Nicholas showed enthusiasm, dedication and a vested interest in the project and were rewarded with an excellent result on the day.

Endeavour’s first League Lego challenge was a fabulous learning experience and a great way for our students to engage with STEM. I thank Mr Tindall for his mentoring and coaching of the boys throughout the term. We look forward to seeing the team furthering their success in next year’s competition.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WITH GATEWAYS EDUCATION GIFTED EDUCATION WORKSHOP NO. 2

On Friday 10 November Endeavour had the pleasure of hosting Bronwyn McLeod for a second time from Gateways Education. The workshop addressed strategies for differentiating our curriculum across all KLAs so staff can better tier the learning in their classes for mastery of outcomes in both mixed ability classes and the extension classes. Staff who participated will use their knowledge of tiered instruction and planning for concept-based learning to in-service their colleagues within their faculties so all staff are given the opportunity to build on the new programs for 2018, catering for gifted education and personalised learning plans for all students.

It has, once again, been another busy and exciting term with lots to be celebrated.

I look forward to new and progressive developments in 2018 for Gifted Education at Endeavour Sports High school, where I will be handing over the Year 7 & 8 Extension program to the 2IC and I will be working on a new program for the Year 9 and 10 Extension classes.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a very safe holiday period.

CLONTARF FOUNDATION

Sydney Region Cricket Carnival

The Endeavour Clontarf Academy hosted the Sydney Region Cricket carnival for 2017.

In a change up to conventional cricket, this year the carnival was held at Indoor Sportsworld and the lads played Indoor cricket.

The centre had three courts with the six teams playing a fast paced round robin competition throughout the morning.

After the pool games, Endeavour and Dunheved played in the final. Both teams were undefeated in their pool games so the final was always going to be a close and exciting match up. The scores were level with one ball remaining and with a tip and run Dunheved came up with a close run out to win this year’s carnival. There were plenty of great cricket skills on display which produced some really close and exciting games. Clontarf spirit was evident throughout the carnival and the boys really enjoyed the Indoor concept.

The day concluded with a big feed together and the presentation of awards.

Year 12 Catch A Feast

Our Year 12 boys were lucky enough to go deep sea fishing whilst on their major camp to Cairns recently. None of the boys have ever been out fishing before so the excitement they had reeling in these huge fish will be an experience they will never forget.

The deckhand filleted the fish for us and we fed 24 other Clontarf students and staff that night.

DRIVETIME – Hits the Road - Learn to Drive Driving Program

With the support of Gymea Community Aid and a private donor we have been able to start a Learn to Drive program for Aboriginal youth.

Up until now the boys at Kirinari Hostel have not had the opportunity to learn to drive whilst living at the Hostel. We are proud to say that has now changed with our boys having access to lessons with qualified driving instructors.

The program has been running for three weeks and we have had four boys pass their L’s and have started doing lessons. A huge success for all involved.

FOX Sports

Fox Sports’ Tim Sheridan visited Endeavour and filmed the boys performing some skill drills, playing Oztag and in the Aacdemy room playing table tennis. He is doing a special on the Clontarf Foundation and Endeavour will feature along with the Brewarrina Academy.

TSP CHEERLEADING

2017 has been a prodigious year for the Endeavour Flames Cheerleading program. We have grown in size and ability this year, with this trend continuing into 2018 when we welcome seven new cheerleaders to the program. The girls received new uniforms with matching bows that outshone the competition and created a look to match the team’s enthusiasm.

Our competition year started off with State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park in August. The team were nervous as it was their first competition with new members; they gave a solid performance and came 3rd in their section.

Our second and the biggest competition in the school cheer calendar are Scholastic and University Nationals. Here school teams from all over Australia compete to take out the top spot. The Flames started well, however after a slight wobble in one of the stunts the team found it difficult to fully recover and lost valuable points overall on the routine. They still managed to take out 3rd place in their section due to the complexity of the routine and the girls vowed to come back stronger and more confident in the next competition. Their final competition for the year was Cheerbrandz, a New Zealand based competition that brought teams from over the Tasman with them. The girls put on their best performance of the year and were nearly faultless in the execution of the routine scoring a well-deserved 1st place in their division.

The Flames have a full 2018 calendar planned with Winter Warm Up by Spirit Industries Australia in early July, All Star Battle by AASCF in late July set in Homebush and finally Scholastic and University Nationals by AASCF in September in Sydney Olympic Park.

Trials will be held early in Term 1 for a position on the team to attend the National Cheer and Dance Championships held on the Gold Coast in November. This will be the first time that ESHS will attend this massive competition and hope the turn out will rival the 12,000 cheerleaders who attended this year’s competition held in Melbourne.

Overall it was a successful year for the Flames although we did lose some team members due to serious injuries not sustained from cheer! The team look forward to an exciting and challenging 2018.

TSP AFL

It’s been a big year for AFL with several senior boys past and present making successful progress in their career path. James Bell, former student in 2016 was successful in being pre-selected as a Category B Rookie for the Sydney Swans. James was an extremely disciplined and hardworking player, who strived to excel in all areas of his fitness, skill and strength. James was an inspiration to the rest of the boys in the program. He frequently offered guidance to the junior boys, helping them improve themselves on every aspect of their game. Moustafa Sattout was also successful in joining Sydney University and recently, Angelo Zanis and Orlando Smith were invited to represent Australia in the 2017 Junior AFL tour in Fiji last week. Success in qualifying for Sydney East this year also included Josh Nicholls, Angelo Zanis, Gus Newton and Harry Parker. Students nominated at the TSP Presentation night included, Most Improved Player - Harry Parker, Junior Sportsman of the Year – Angelo Zanis and Senior Sportsman of the Year - Cameron McQueen. During the winter season the program saw an unexpected high number in player injuries. This was due to some players taking part in highly competitive games with the Academy Cup, while other injuries occurred during their local competitions. At some stages throughout the year there were up to two thirds of the boys unable to train. These injuries ranged from shin splints, groin injuries, cracked ribs, broken fingers, back injuries, Osgood Schlatter’s disease and more. However, over the past six months the boys have successfully implemented the strength and conditioning program. This program has been designed to teach the boys how to stretch, improve flexibility, increase strength and how to move weights with correct movements and procedures. This year all players have surpassed all expectations in their quality of kicking using their non-preferred foot. Every player has developed their kicking efficiency, distance and accuracy. This will be another focus leading into their next season of football training.

During the middle of the year Endeavour joined three other Sports High Schools in a testing and training day at GWS GIANTS Homebush. The day was a huge success with the Endeavour boys meeting players from other schools. Although numbers are low across all Sports High Schools, it was a great day to collaborate and train under the one umbrella.

Over the past five weeks the boys have been slowly been building their fitness levels in preparation for pre-season training. The program is directly from the Swans Academy, which has been a shock to some as they experience some of the intensity set by the Academy. The boys will continue with this program during Term 1 next year setting them up for both the Academy and Club level training. A special thank you to the Swans Academy for their support in training programs and training gear. Well done to all the boys who have trained hard over the past year. Next year will be bigger and better, with some very talented players making a start in Year 7.

TSP TENNIS

It’s been another successful year for the TSP Tennis program. We have seen great individual and team results all year.

Individual results:

• Angus Smith (Year 10) Opens Sydney East boys winner

• Patricia Arnold (Year 11) Opens Sydney East girls winner

• Kamil Kozlowski (Year 11) has competed in both New Zealand and Fiji in ITF tournaments

• Taj Hibbert (Year 8) won the Canberra under 14s clay courts tournament (singles)

• Both Kamil and Taj have made Nationals (DECEMBER SHOWDOWN - biggest tournament in the Asia pacific region)

• Australian rankings for birth year: Kamil Kozlowski number 2, Taj Hibbert number 4 in Australia respectively.

Team results:

• Opens Girls team won the state finals (Floris Conway Cup)

Departing Year 12 students Georgije Babic and Julia Kumula will be sorely missed. Both students were great role models for the program on and off the court. Georgije has won four state finals and Julia has won three during their time at Endeavour. Georgije has also made the Pizzey Cup team (NSW all schools team) on two separate occasions. We thank both Georgije and Julia for their dedication to the program and hope to see them back on the Endeavour tennis courts at some stage.

We look forward to meeting with the new enrolments for 2018 and hope everyone has a good break and has success over the Christmas tournaments.

TSP HOCKEY

As Hockey’s inaugural year at Endeavour, 2017 has been an exciting year for establishing the program. Our players have shown remarkable growth under the guidance of our dedicated and highly skilled Hockey NSW coach, Alan Charlton, and we look forward to continuing to have him lead our team in 2018. The program has had a range of talented players trial for the program throughout the year and we anticipate having a large and dynamic group of players hit the field next year.

We are very grateful to Hockey NSW for the tremendous support afforded the program both through the coaching and through forward planning for a range of exciting 2018 programs, including interschool training and camp opportunities. We would also like to thank Sutherland Hockey club and in particular Mags Noy for the wonderful support and encouragement offered throughout 2017.

Finally, congratulations to our wonderful players, Alex and Hannah. Your dedication, energy and positive attitudes have been inspirational. You will make wonderful guides and mentors to our new players in 2018.

The U14's Boys Sevens competed in the North Sydney Sevens Pool this term. The squad achieved two wins against but then narrowly lost to Davidson High. Endeavour improved to win the final playoff against Davidson High 25-20.

HOME TSP NETBALL

In 2017, the TSP Netball program has flourished. It has been a successful year for all our girls thanks to the expert coaching of Ms Blades and Ms Straker and the mentoring of Ms Mouratidis.

Early in the year we visited the Genea Netball Centre in Homebush where our girls took part in a Sports High Schools Netball Development Day. They watched the Giants train in the morning; then they played a number of friendly games with the other participating Sports High Schools; the girls listened to guest speakers from the Swifts before finishing the day watching the entire Swifts team run through their training drills. Our girls were extremely attentive and motivated by the experience.

Our Opens team had a very successful 2017 – firstly, they became the Sydney East Netball Champions and then competed at the NSWCHS Championships where they finished second in the state. A fabulous achievement!

We then witnessed our Under 15’s proudly represent Endeavour at the NSW CHS Final series in Berkeley. The girls played 15 thrilling Round games before progressing to the finals where we finished third in NSW. Well done girls!

TSP Netball also took part in the NSW Cup, entering 3 teams (2 x 7/8 teams and 1 x 9/10 team). Two teams progressed to the next Final series held at the Genea Netball Centre and one of our Year7/8 team finished in second position.

The following girls were selected in the Sydney East Open Netball team for 2017: Lauren Hamilton-Smith; Zoe Kirby; Ky-Mani Schwenke; Ella Robinson; Shannon Brown. They then competed in the NSWCHS State Championshios and were undefeated State Champions! Ky Mani Schwenke was also selected from this carnival into the Open NSWCHS State Team.

During the winter sport season, every Thursday afternoon Endeavour participated in the Port Hacking Zone Division 1 netball competition at Bellingara Netball Courts. After 16 rounds, all three of our teams had progressed to the finals! The Year 9/10 team finished as Senior Port Hacking Zone Champions. Our Year 8 team came up against our Year 7 team in the final, where we witnessed a real nail-biting game. The Year 8 team edged ahead in the closing stages to become the Junior Port Hacking Zone Champions and the Year 7 team finished Runners- up.

In the off-season, the girls have continued to refine their core netball skills, including choice of and placement of the pass, attacking leads, defensive footwork and balance and they are also working hard to maintain their cardiovascular endurance. They have also been provided with the opportunity to access Strength and Conditioning sessions every Friday morning before school in the Fitness Centre with Ms Tash Turner. One of the highlights of Term 4 has been the training at Cronulla beach on Thursdays. The girls have participated in a variety of sessions from running the sand hills, to water’s edge beach running, to competitive sprint activities. It has been a refreshing change to move off site for our training with such a beautiful backdrop.

We would like to wish our girls and all of their families a safe and relaxing summer break and looking forward to a successful and busy netball year in 2018.

TSP BASEBALL

2017 has been a great year for the Baseball Program. This year our numbers have grown and we now have more athletes in the program than ever before. As a result we welcomed Olivia Bannon as an assistant coach who helped to motivate and coach the boys as well as implement the new warm up program.

We had great success with many of our players being selected into development squads and representative teams.

Notable achievements include:

Thomas Horne - represented NSW in the U16 National Youth Championships in January where the team won the bronze medal. He represented Sydney East in the State High School Championships for the second year running. Thomas was also asked to play in a team of Australian players that travelled to the US to play in the Arizona Fall Classic in October. The team went undefeated through the tournament which was played in front of scouts from US colleges and Major League Baseball teams.

Katoa Mairi was selected to play Grade level Baseball for Cronulla in the Senior State League. Keanu Cowley travelled to the USA on the Nxt Gen tour and is also playing Reps in the Shipley State Cup. Brad Griffin also selected for the Rep squad in the Shipley State Cup. Coby Hardy represented on the World boys tour to the USA and was selected to play State League for the Vikings locally. Patrick Glasheen and Anthony Tsoukarellis of Year 7 were selected to play for NSW in the Little League Nationals in Lismore where they finished runners up after a rain disrupted tournament.

As a TSP group we entered the Proud Shield knockout and travelled to Blacktown on two occasions to participate in the Sports High Schools Gala days where we won three out of four games against the other Sports High Schools in the Sydney and Hunter regions. We also increased our amount of game time by organising games with other local school teams.

We have a young squad who show a lot of promise and have held their own very well this year against some older and stronger teams. The future is bright, and under the guidance of our very committed head coach Peter Worboys, we look forward to a great season in the new year. Ms K Chalk, Mentor HOME TSP RUGBY LEAGUE

All teams were very evenly matched and the games were close. In what was a great way to end the season, both teams were able to secure a win and lock in 3rd place in this Sports High Schools competition.

Sydney East Blues

Dylan Smith, Bronson Xerri and Teig Wilton were awarded Sydney East Blues at the recent awards night. All three boys had successful representative seasons with Dylan, Teig and Bronson making the NSWCHS team and all boys gaining selection in the Australian Schoolboys team.

NRL Grand Final Winner

Endeavour Graduate and 2015 Dau Medal winner, Curtis Scott, played in the NRL Grand Final winning team that defeated the in October. Curtis had a fantastic game and even managed to score a try in the second half. He had a strong second half of the season, becoming a week to week starting player in arguably the best team in the world.

Curtis continues to keep in contact with his school coaches and mentors, and took the time in Term 4 to come and train with our Opens boys.

Finally, we would like to thank all our students, parents and carers for their ongoing support.

Very best wishes for Christmas and the holiday period. We look forward to welcoming our Year 7 students and working with you all in 2018.

TSP RUGBY UNION

U14’s Coast to Country Cup State Champions

Congratulations to U14's Rugby Union on winning The 2017 Coast to Country Cup in Forster. In a field of 10 finalists from Wollongong to Coffs Harbour, Endeavour SHS won their 4 pool games without conceding a try and went on to win a nail biting Grand Final against St Edwards 15-14. St Edwards Gosford is a large Catholic boys school of 1100. Westfields finished 5th. Illawarra didn't make the final 10.

U13’s Shire 7’s Champions

This year we took two teams to Shire 7’s to compete against the local high schools. The U13’s had a strong team and with a number of players having played in the Coast to Country Cup side, they were full of confidence. Endeavour SHS U13’s proved too strong for their age group going through the day undefeated and winning the final against Port Hacking 35-10.

U16’s Girls Rugby 7’s/League 9’s

Endeavour SHS Girls U16 Rugby 9’s won all three games at Cronulla HS for the Rugby League World Cup Gala. The girls then watched The Cook Islands, England, The Jillaroos and Canada play at Southern Cross Group Stadium in round 3 of The World Cup.

ESHS v Mater Maria 16-4 ESHS v Hoxton Park 24-16 ESHS v Macarthur Adventist 16-6

U16’s Girls Meet Canada and The Jilleroos

The U16s Endeavour Rugby 9’s team stood in the tunnel with the Jillaroos and Canadian teams at the Women’s RLWC. Our Endeavour SHS girls got to meet and walk out with the Canadian team and stand with them during both National anthems. Unfortunately Canada lost 88-0 and probably could have done with some help from Zali, Ella, Brandi, Alani, Lilli, Limiah, Tyra, Waku, Malu, Marama and Ula.

TSP Girls Rugby 7’s / League 9’s will start in 2018 with Tiana Penitani as Ambassador, Steve Kelly coaching League 9’s and Liam Dwyer coaching Rugby 7’s.

Sports High Schools 7’s

Each Sports High School hosted one leg of the Sports High Schools Rugby Sevens tournament during Term 1 and 4. Each age group played four tournaments over the year. The U13’s and U14’s were very competitive, regularly finishing 2nd and 3rd and winning against Hills in the final leg of the tournament.

Overall it was a successful tournament with great rugby being played and it provided the boys plenty of elite game time and 7’s exposure.

Congratulations to Darcy Lohan, Lisiate Tupou, Ezra Rusling and Terry Ballis who all made it into the NSW Sports High Schools Rep Sevens team that Played in Coffs Harbour. Lisiate scored a try in the final seconds to send the u13’s Sports High Schools team into Grand Final extra time. The boys finished 2nd in the State, which was a brilliant effort for their first year in the tournament.

Congratulations to former Endeavour School Captain Brandon Paenga Amosa on signing with Qld Reds. Brandon was ecstatic to receive the call from former All Black Brad Thorn and to be given the opportunity to prove his worth at Super Rugby level.

Liam Dwyer and Ben Cameron Coach and Mentor HOME TSP SWIMMING

The year commenced early with our TSP swimmers competing at the Endeavour Sports High School Carnival. Records tumbled with Miranda Watson, Leslie Neilsen, Hannah Higgins and Nathan Clarke breaking an incredible 13 records.

The Port Hacking Zone Carnival saw a continuation of this excellent form from Endeavour swimmers with Miranda Watson, Adam Griffin, Hannah Higgins, the Boys 17-19 Years Relay Team (Nathan Clarke, Adam Griffin, Reece Bereveskos, Jamee Smith) advancing to the Sydney East Carnival. Leslie Neilsen was named the 13 year Boys Champion and Nathan Clarke who broke the 100m Butterfly record was a close runner up in the Boys 17-19 Year Boys age group.

Again Endeavour swimmers achieved success at the Sydney East Carnival with Leslie Neilson, Nathan Clarke, Hannah Higgins, the Boys 17-19 Years Relay Team (Nathan Clarke, Adam Griffin, Reece Bereveskos, Jamee Smith) and the Boys 12 Years Relay Team (Liam Christie, Jonathon Korkidas, Corey Ackers, Jack Palma) progressing to the NSWCHS Carnival. Our multi-disability swimmers Zac Talau, Thomas Neilson, Aden Clarke and Nick Fotopoulos performed well with Ryan Dowling breaking two records. These exceptional swims placed Endeavour a 2nd in the overall Boys Team Scores and 5th in the Combined Team Scores.

An outstanding effort and determination in the NSWCHS Carnival saw Leslie Neilson, Nathan Clarke and Ryan Dowling excel in the pool in a highly competitive competition with representation in the NSW All Schools Carnival and further selection to compete in the Pacific School Games. Our very talented Multiclass swimmer Ryan Dowling broke two records and was named Multi-Class Swimmer of the Championship, a tremendous result from Ryan who is a role model, always training with maximum effort and enthusiasm.

In December, Endeavour’s three All Schools team members competed in the Pacific School in Adelaide, representing NSW All Schools with some excellent results. Nathan Clarke was 3rd in the Boys 17-19 yrs 200m Butterfly, Leslie Neilsen, 9th in the Boys 13 yrs 50m Freestyle and ‘superfish’ multiclass swimmer Ryan Dowling was placed 2nd in the Mixed 200m Medley Relay and 3rd in the 50m Freestyle. Well done to these three boys.

The Sports High Schools Swimming Carnival in October at gave the TSP swimmers a chance to compete against Hunter, Hills, Narrabeen and Westfields Sports High Schools. The standard of competition was high and many of the Endeavour swimmers achieved excellent results. Some of our younger swimmers swam in senior events and swam admirably against much older competitors. They are to be congratulated for their competitive spirit and effort.

Our TSP swimmers are to be congratulated on their commitment and determination in training. They always put in maximum effort, constantly trying to attain the times set by coach Craig Stevens. This has been rewarded in achieving representative honours and improvement in endurance and times. Special mention for their enthusiasm and perseverance in training must go to Miranda Watson, Ariella Tang, Diego Goni, Thomas McKirdy, Lucas Goulimis and Jeffrey Yu Guan. They are always trying to achieve their personal best which will ensure their success in future carnivals in 2018.

Further congratulations to Ryan Dowling, TSP Junior Sportsperson, Adam Griffin Most Improved and Nathan Clarke who was our Senior Sportsperson. Nathan was also the Boys Senior Sportsman of the Year, a worthy recipient and outstanding competitor not only in swimming but across all sports.

Have a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday. Train hard in the holidays for your carnivals in 2018.

TSP FOOTBALL

A busy and productive term both on and off the pitch has seen plenty of highlights for the Endeavour Sports High School TSP Football.

Congratulations to our footballers who received awards at the TSP presentation evening. In the girls Felicity McNeill was our Junior Player of the Year whilst Isabella Georgievski was our Senior Player of the Year. Melody Nelson was named Most Improved with her efforts on the training field and also being recognised at the state level with selection in the NSW All Schools team to participate in the Pacific School Games this month.

Alex Tims along with Melody was recognised for her selection in the NSW Combined High Schools team with an Endeavour Sports High School Blues award. Alex’s sporting talent extends across to cricket as well. Alex is also a talented cricket player and was given the opportunity to play in a trial game for the Sydney Sixers against the Scorchers.

Beyond school, congratulations go to Chantelle Symes as one of five under 15 goalkeepers having recently been selected to attend an Australian selection camp. Aimee Hall is also to be congratulated for her selection in the NSW Institute squad for 2018, this being great recognition of her efforts in training and games.

More recently our girls played a game against Erindale High School (Canberra). Our young Year 7 girls had their first opportunity to participate in an Open competition playing with skill and poise to assist in our win. Special mention goes to Abagail Boag and Samantha Payne on how they competed against much older opponents.

Our girls have been extending their training routine by participating in strength and conditioning sessions with Ms Jessop and Tash from Sydney Uni on Thursday afternoons. The girls have also been involved in cross training activities such as boxing, running and circuit work. A huge thankyou to Start Fitness Gym in Caringbah for the use of their fabulous facilities.

We would also like to wish our two Year 12 girls, Emily Thurgar and Tanya Marjanovic all the best in their life after Endeavour and thank them for their commitment to our program.

As with our girls, congratulations go to our male award recipients on the TSP presentation night. Cody Ashburner, the Junior Footballer of the Year, Kyle Sarigiannis, the Senior Footballer of the Year and Most Improved, Marcus Cowan.

Tri State Tournament

Tristian Michelmann (NSW Blue), Nathan Hancock, Alex Lopez and Jared Kadar (NSW White) were all recently selected in the NSW All School teams to compete at the Tri State Tournament against teams from Queensland and South Australia. The NSW Blue team went through the tournament undefeated while NSW White finished second. All boys also received Endeavour Blues awards for their achievement.

Congratulations to all boys for making it to this level and special mention to Nathan Hancock who was selected in the Australian Schoolboys Shadow team.

Talent ID Days

This term has seen a continuation of the Talent ID Days format where the Endeavour students compete with and against students from Bossley Park and Narrabeen Sports High Schools.

The Year 7 TSP Football Boys Squad travelled to Narrabeen Sports High School on Monday 13th November for their final Sydney FC Talent ID Day for the year. The day is an opportunity for the boys to show their skill and progression under the watchful eye of five experienced coaches.

Games against Belmore Boys

Game 1 - Year 7 Squad: Endeavour 4 defeated Belmore 1 This was a very evenly poised game despite the look of the score line. Both keepers denied the opposition with some excellent keeping. In attack the Endeavour boys moved the ball around the park which caused our opposition numerous headaches as they exerted dominance for periods of the game.

Game 2 - Year 10/11 Squad: Endeavour 7 defeated Belmore 1 Another closely fought contest for the majority of the match with both teams intent on playing a high tempo game in attack. Several Year 9 players stepped up to the senior squad and they were very impressive on debut. The Endeavour boys fitness proved telling in the end and is a result of the high tempo style the boys are practising in training.

Game 3 - Year 8/9 Squad: Endeavour 6 defeated Belmore 0

With some Year 9 boys stepping up to the senior squad, it was time for a few others to show their qualities and let the coach know they want to be part of the main squad going forward. The pace of the game was quick from the outset and Endeavour produced some of the best football seen all day.

Year 7 Squad vs NSW PSSA All Schools

The Year 7 TSP Football Squad hosted the NSW All Schools PSSA team who are competing in the Pacific School Games in December. In a highly skilful game both teams looked to attack at every opportunity and it made for an end to a thrilling game.

As another year draws to a close we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents for their support and look forward to a very special 2018. We wish our football family a safe and happy holiday.

TSP CRICKET

It has been an extremely hectic but rewarding year for the Endeavour Sports High School TSP Cricket program. Whilst essentially a very young cohort overall, excellent recruitment and an ever improving reputation both on and off the sporting fields has led to exciting times for students and cricket staff alike. Defined links with the Sydney 6ers, Cricket NSW and the University of NSW have all contributed to providing a wealth of opportunities for both training, games in all formats, skills acquisition and ultimately pathways for further education / sporting endeavours. The Department of Education and Cricket NSW have pledged much needed funding into the upgrade of the bottom oval nets and centre wicket area. Over $100,000 will be spent ensuring that the nets in particular will be completely refurbished and also expanded. Exciting news indeed. By all estimates this should be done sometime in the next semester. The squad has had the opportunity to mix strength and conditioning training with skill based net and centre wicket practice. Rhino gym has offered us a personal trainer who takes the boys through a rigorous session once a week free of charge, improving all aspects of movement, strength and conditioning. Under the expert tutelage of our four coaches, both the juniors and seniors have been training at school during Term 3 and 4. Scott Phillipson, Tim Laws, Nathan Loveday and B.J have been doing many skill based activities every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. All of this training has been beneficial to each and every member of our cricket TSP and that is evident with many of our Year 7 and 8 students playing at very high levels such as the senior Davidson Shield squad. Many of our squad have played representative cricket both inside and outside of the school’s network. Special mention to Declan Hart, Jamaine Melchior, James Muggeridge and Akash Biradar who represented Sydney East at the NSW Championships recently. It has been a mixed season in terms of results. With such a young squad the senior Davidson Shield side has found it hard to match it with the likes of Westfields and Hills who inevitably have senior teams laced with older more experienced players, many who are playing high levels of grade cricket. The juniors however have beaten Westfields and Hills and remain undefeated in the Sports Schools competition. Adam Singleton and Angus McLeod both scored 80’s to steer Endeavour to comfortable wins. In the Sydney 6ers 20/20 cup, special mention must go to Jamaine Melchior who scored 120 odd against Sylvania and also put on 189 with Adam Singleton against Kirrawee before rain stopped play. Luke Hawksworth topped off a huge year by being awarded top cricketer in the Sydney East region. His sporting blue was complemented by his Senior Cricketer of the Year for Endeavour Sports High. He was also called up to play first grade for Sutherland and celebrated the occasion with his maiden first class Hundred. Well done Luke. First term 2018 will see many more games scheduled before we go into off season training in Terms 2 and 3. We look forward to meeting all the new inductees for the 2018 season and we will finish this year with an annual Year 7 vs Year 6 challenge, Tuesday last week of term, at school. Thanks to all the students, parents and coaching staff for their involvement in the 2017 season and we look forward to another successful and exciting season next year.

TSP DANCE

When people ask me if I participate in a sport, I obviously respond with ‘yes, I Dance’. Unfortunately, the usual response to that is ‘but Dance isn’t a real sport’. Our society leads us to believe that Dance doesn’t require as much talent or skill as ‘real sports’ such as NRL, Soccer or Basketball. I am here to tell you that this is a complete and total MYTH! Dance requires as much dedication as any other sport, where commitment to improvement and mastering skills are of high importance.

Not only do dancers have to master skills such as, performing a 360 degree rotation three times over whilst on their tip toes and maintaining correct alignment and balance. They also have to, at the same time, think about performance quality. What is their face doing? How is their quality of line? Where should their focus be? How about their eye line? Are they successfully communicating an idea or intent to the audience? They have to think and apply all of these things whilst metres above the ground in a full split and rotating 360 degrees in the air. I guarantee that anyone who still says that dance isn’t hard has never engaged in a full on dance class. I challenge that person to go and do a class and see if their opinion changes.

Dance should be something you love to do. Any sport that you participate in should be something you love to do. You should never do something only because you are good at it, or your parents used to do it so now you have to do it too. That will never be enough. You need to love what you do in order to fully succeed and feel fulfilled. I have seen all of the students love for dance steadily grow, which warms my heart. As someone once said

“People with great passion can make the impossible happen” – Unknown

TSP Dance has shown growth throughout 2017. The dancers have worked extremely hard to improve their skills, and in turn, improve the reputation of Dance at ESHS. The program has provided a safe space for students to be creative and not judged. Dance is about expressing yourself in ways you wouldn’t feel comfortable to with words. It provides students an outlet to further express their emotions without having to speak. The dancers have been able to do this through learnt dances, technical exercises and improvisational tasks during training.

Our program is attracting students from other schools. TSP Dance has had transfer requests from some great talent. This is a testament to all of the hard work our current dancers have put into the program.

Throughout the year students in TSP Dance have represented the school tremendously at the following events:

. ESHS’s Women’s Day Assembly . Assembly for the U.S Consulate General . Ultimo Dance Festival . Sutherland Dance Festival . Education Week at Miranda Westfield . ESHS Performing Arts Showcase ‘Mind Over Matter’

To the students in TSP Dance I want to say:

Stand tall. Smile so bright that those who want to bring you down are dazzled by your kindness. You are all wonderful human beings. You are kind and always willing to help your teammates who need a lift when things get tough. I am very proud to call you my students.

Finally, I want to say that I am extremely proud to now say that I am a part of the Endeavour family. I still have to pinch myself every day, as I can’t believe that I have landed my absolute dream job. Thank you to the dancers for making my job so enjoyable, to the staff for welcoming me and supporting me on my showcase venture, and for James Kozlowski for taking a chance on me.

If you would like to trial for TSP Dance our door is always open to new students, boys and girls.

I am excited for bigger and better things next year!

TSP BASKETBALL

What constitutes a great year for the TSP Basketball group?

Would it be the regular training participation on cold winter mornings?

Would it be strong links being formed with Basketball NSW and the help from the newly appointed U16 2018 Women’s Head Coach and Endeavour Alumni, Lauryn Curtin?

Perhaps part of the success was having Alumni Kate Gaze (Canberra Capitals) as assistant when we travelled to the ACT?

Perhaps it was the Under 16 Endeavour Women Pirates placing second in the State and defeating Westfields in a narrow win to reach the Final?

Perhaps it was the Under 17 Pirates bonding and showing great tenacity at the National Championships with the boys narrowly losing in the quarterfinal?

Or a visit by Alumni Clae Martin from Baker College?

Perhaps it was Tuburu who, in his first National Championship, led all Under 17 scorers in 2 pointers, was top 5 in scoring at an average of 21 per game, and who achieved the remarkable feat of 8 consecutive double-doubles (something an NBA player like Simmonds achieves in his games!)?

Or finding out that Byron goes out to the concrete court every night at the hostel after dinner for hours to practice by himself?

Or the boys helping on a Sunday with Special Olympics selections?

Perhaps it was all of these great experiences!!
