CCGA members would like to encourage all fishers to keep safety in mind at all times. Having the proper safety equipment on board and in good operating order will not prevent a disaster from happening, but knowing its location and practicing its use will greatly increase your chances of survival.
The CCGA will be celebrating 40 years of successful operation in 2018. Since the CCGA was founded in 1978, its members have been credited with participation in thousands of missions and saving countless lives. Thousands of people are helped each year in marine incidents and millions of dollars of property are saved.
The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary has been recognized as one of the best, safest and most cost effective volunteer marine rescue organizations in the world.

He served on the HMCS Ontario and HMCS Cayuga, a destroyer that was part of the initial first dispatch of 3 ships by Canada to Korea. The ship was based out of Sasabo, Japan. Mr. Fennelly is residing in Mount Pearl, NL and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 Mount Pearl.

Jean met her husband Joe in England, while working as a Group Supervisor in a war factory. She left England on December 24th, 1947, arrived in Newfoundland on January 5th, 1948. DECEASED: July 15th, 2000
COSTELLO (MacIVER), Mary Born in Inverasdale, Scotland. Married Thomas Costello of Ferryland on November 29th, 1945. Mary met Thomas in Carrbridge. They came to Ferryland on May 3rd, 1946 and had 10 children. DECEASED: May 5th, 2000
GREENE (SPRING), Magdalena (Lena) Born in Hawick, Scotland on April 30th, 1899. She married Augustus Greene of Cape Broyle, NL, a member of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. They met during a walk in a neighborhood park in Hawick. Gus went to his first moving picture show with Lena. They married in Newfoundland in 1920 and honeymooned on Bell Island. DECEASED: June 1997

KEOUGH (GREIG), Andreina Born in Bowhill, Fifeshire, Scotland on June 12th, 1914. Married James Aiden Keough of Ferryland on February 25th, 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was employed at the Grosvenor Hotel in Glasgow at the time she met her husband. They came to Newfoundland in the spring of 1946. They had one child, Brian, on June 9th, 1946. DECEASED: April 22nd, 1984

Until the deaths last week of four Canadian soldiers accidentally killed by a US warplane in Afghanistan, probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops were deployed in the region. And as always, Canada will now bury its dead, just as the rest of the world as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.
It seems that Canada's historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored. Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.
That is the price which Canada pays for sharing the North American Continent with the US, and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts. For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: it seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved.
Yet its purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy. Almost 10 per cent of Canada's entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.
Canada was repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, its unique contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular memory as somehow or other the work of the "British". The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on D-Day alone. Canada finished the war with the third largest navy and the fourth largest air force in the world.
The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the previous time. Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign which the US had clearly not participated - a touching scrupulousness which, of course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has any notion of a separate Canadian identity.
So it is a general rule that actors and film-makers arriving in Hollywood keep their nationality - unless, that is, they are Canadian. Thus Mary Pickford, Walter Huston, Donald Sutherland, Michael J Fox, William Shatner, Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg and Dan Aykroyd have in the popular perception become American, and Christopher Plummer British. continued ...

It is as if in the very act of becoming famous, a Canadian ceases to be Canadian, unless she is Margaret Atwood, who is as unshakeably Canadian as a moose, or Celine Dion, for whom Canada has proved quite unable to find any takers.
Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves - and are unheard by anyone else - that 1 per cent of the world's population has provided 10 per cent of the world's peace-keeping forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peace-keepers on earth - in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peace- keeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia.
Yet the only foreign engagement which has entered the popular non-Canadian imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia, in which out-of-control paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their regiment was then disbanded in disgrace - a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which, naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.
So who today in the US knows about the stoic and selfless friendship its northern neighbour has given it in Afghanistan? Rather like Cyrano de Bergerac, Canada repeatedly does honourable things for honourable motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a figure of fun. It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud, yet such honour comes at a high cost.
This weekend four shrouds, red with blood and maple leaf, head homewards; and four more grieving Canadian families know that cost all too tragically well.

The Sailing Training Squadron was abolished in 1898 or 1899, and in 1902 the old Calypso made her last voyage across the Atlantic to become the drill and depot ship for the renowned Royal Newfoundland Naval Reserve. Shortly after her arrival at St. John’s, she was stripped of her masts and yards, and the upper deck was roofed over to make a suitable training space for the winter months, when the Naval Reserve men came in for their annual training course.
During the 1914-18 war, the Calypso trained and sent overseas several hundred seamen to join the Fleet – many James John “Jack” Taylor was born on June 22, 1893 at sea lost their lives in action against the enemy. The story of the HMS CALYPSO (FRITON)
The Calypso was launched at the Royal Dock Yard, Chatham in 1883, and was completed in the same year. She was designed by Sir Nathaniel Barnaby and laid down in 1881. She and her sister ship, the Calliope, were the last of the British Sailing Corvettes.

136 Military Service Recognition Book Volume 18 Remembering John A. James
John A. James was born in Forteau, NL. He joined the Merchant Navy during World War One with the Newfoundland I Royal Naval Reserve. He served on the Trawler VIVANTI , which had not been heard from since March 7, 1917. John is presumed to have drowned.
The following note from The Colonial Secretary, dated March 16, 1917, was sent to John’s mother to advise her of the tragic news:
Dear Madam, It was with extreme regret that the Government learned, through Commander MacDermott, that the Admiralty had advised that your son, John James, was missing and believed drowned, having been seaman on the Trawler VIVANTI which ship has not been heard of since March 7th.
Permit me to express to you on behalf of the Government, as well as for myself, the sincerest sympathy in your time of sorrow. We all feel the loss of loved ones, but there is, no doubt, some comfort to you in the thought that he has done his utmost. We are proud of our sailors – there are no men anywhere can beat them, and they came forward loyally at the call of King and Country. We are equally proud of the noble and unselfish fathers and mothers who so readily gave their sons when the call of Duty came. Your brave lad has won his place on the glorious Roll of Honour and his name will be held in fragrant memory by all his fellowcountrymen. When Peace comes again to his earth and the War Flags are furled, in the midst of your sorrow, there will be the thought that your dear boy bore no inconsiderable part in bringing about that much to be desired end. May the Great Father of all give to you his presence and consolation.
