Description Condition Check one Check one _ x_ excellent deteriorated unaltered xoriginal site _ x-good ruins x altered moved date _x-fair unexposed Describe the present and original (if known) physical appearance Located approximately three miles east of downtown Memphis, Tennessee (pop. 667,150), the Evergreen Historic District is comprised of 1366 primarily residential buildings dating from the 1890*s to the 1930's. Although a majority of the residences are Bungalows and Four-Squares of brick, stone, and stucco, there are excellent examples of Colonial Revival, Beaux Arts, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival houses. Mostly constructed between 1902 and 1925, the buildings are mainly in excellent to good condition. Only 74 of the structures are non-contributing, primarily due to being less than fifty years old. The landscaping of the district gives the area a cohesive, lush character with large lots, deep and uniform set-backs, and mature trees and shrubs. Containing 53 blocks, the boundaries of the Evergreen Historic District are clearly distinguished by the tree-lined boulevard, North Parkway, by the city's Overton Park, by the major commercial artery. Poplar Avenue, and by the quiet residential street of N. Watkins, parallel to busy Cleveland Avenue. The district also cpntains an adjacent area of similar architecture and history, bounded by Poplar, Willett, Court, and Stonewall. Also included within the boundaries of the nominated neighborhood is the Stonewall Place Historic District, previously listed on the National Register in 1981. The historical development of the neighborhood is evident in the rows of small frame, one-story cottages on Watkins from the 1900's; the large stucco and brick residences on Overton Park Avenue in a variety of early-twentieth-century styles; and the multiple- story Tudor Revival apartment buildings on Poplar Avenue. As laid out at the turn of the century, the district's streets form a simple grid pattern with concrete curbs and side walks. Through the careful maintenance of its houses and wooden lots, the Evergreen area has retained its historical and architectural integrity to a very high degree. Forming the largest number of buildings in the district, the Bungalows and Four-Squares exhibit a wide variety of details, materials, and formal architectural influences. The Bungalows are commonly one-and-a-half story, brick buildings with low pitched gable roofs, wide eaves, and shed-roofed dormers, and with deep porches having battered piers of stone, brick, or wood. Like the Bungalows in the district, the Four-Squares illustrate the early- twentieth-century architectural concern with the clear and simple expression of material, form and function. The district's large residences in these two styles often show Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Mediterranean architectural details. In addition to Bungalows and Four-Squares, the Evergreen Historic District has outstanding local examples of houses designed principally in the Beaux Arts, Georgian Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and Mediterranean styles. Among the architecturally important non- residential buildings in the district are Snowden School (1910) in the Beaux Arts style and Trinity United Methodist Church (1925) in a late Gothic design. Under the direction of Janis Foster, an architectural survey of the Evergreen Historic District was conducted during 1983 and 1984 by volunteers from the neighborhood organization, Mid-Mem phis Neighborhood Association and by students of Professor Marius Carriere from Christian Brothers College. During the survey each building was inspected and researched to determine its importance to the district. Dr. Barbara Frankle researched and compiled the historical material for the nomination. The information was gathered at the Memphis Public Library and from interviews with past and present neighborhood residents and local historians. Informatior from the survey and historical research was used to determine the boundaries of the historical district. The nomination was edited by Lloyd Ostby.
