Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -
Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia. -

This preserve is only a few miles from both the Indiana and Michigan state borders. The great biodiversity of moths is reflected in the bog, fen, shrub swamp, and marsh communities bor dering the lake. A check list of species summarizes identified collections for 1988,1992,1995 and 1996 and includes the Hodges et al (1983) species num bers, the scientific name, and the numbers collected by different collecting methods. -

Oak Symposium: Sustaining Oak Forests in the 21St Century Through Science-Based Management
IMPACTS OF OAK DECLINE, GYPSY MOTH, AND NATIVE SPRING DEFOLIATORS ON THE OAK RESOURCE IN VIRGINIA Christopher Asaro and Lori A. Chamberlin Abstract—The oak-hickory and oak-pine forest types dominate much of the southern landscape. In the Blue- Ridge and Appalachian Mountains of western Virginia, oak as a percentage of total forest volume can be as high as 60 percent. Much of this forest type is represented by older aged cohorts with little potential for oak regeneration to replace declining codominants. Oak decline is a prevalent natural phenomenon across the landscape, brought about by aging cohorts growing on poor sites, and exacerbated by inciting factors such as recurring drought and insect defoliation events. In Virginia, the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) has been the primary spring defoliator of oaks since the mid-1980s, although outbreak populations have been moderated since the mid-1990s by the gypsy moth fungus, Entomophaga maimaiga. In addition, several native defoliators have produced periodic outbreaks since the 1950s, particularly the fall cankerworm. The fall cankerworm (Alsophila pometaria) is the most common native defoliator of Virginia’s oaks, producing outbreaks somewhere in the State about every 5 years for the last 65 years or so. According to detailed historical records, these outbreaks seem to be getting worse in terms of acres impacted by defoliation. Other native defoliators have also had periodic outbreaks over this time period, albeit less frequently than the fall cankerworm. These include the forest tent caterpillar (Malacasoma disstria), variable oakleaf caterpillar (Lochmaeus manteo), linden looper (Erannis tiliaria), oak leaf tier (Croesia semipurpurana), and half-winged geometer (Phigalia titea). -
Species on the Menu of a Generalist

HEBERT* *Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada N1G2W1, †Department of Biology, University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada N6A 5B7 Abstract One of the most difficult interactions to observe in nature is the relationship between a predator and its prey. When direct observations are impossible, we rely on morphological classification of prey remains, although this is particularly challenging among generalist predators whose faeces contain mixed and degraded prey fragments. In this investigation, we used a poly- merase chain reaction and sequence-based technique to identify prey fragments in the guano of the generalist insectivore, the eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), and evaluate several hypotheses about prey selection and prey defences. The interaction between bats and insects is of significant evolutionary interest because of the adaptive nature of insect hearing against echolocation. However, measuring the successes of predator tactics or particular prey defences is limited because we cannot normally identify these digested prey fragments beyond order or family. Using a molecular approach, we recovered sequences from 89% of the fragments tested, and through comparison to a reference database of sequences, we were able to identify 127 different species of prey. Our results indicate that despite the robust jaws of L. borealis, most prey taxa were softer-bodied Lepidoptera. -

Seasonal Dynamics of Leaf-Tying Caterpillars on White Oak

This study examined thc seasonal pattern of leaf tie construction and occupancy hy caterpillars associated with white oak, Quercus alba, in Missouri. Thirty white oak trees were monitored over the course of a season, recording the phenology of leaf tie construction, occupancy, and abandonment by 14 different species of J e af~tying caterpiHars. Larvae of Pseudotelphusa sp. (Gelechiidae) created most of the initial leaf ties, lTlany of which were secondarily occupied by a valiety of other leaf tiers. Tn addition, non-tying caterpillar species from a variety of families were common secondary occupants. As many as 6 different species and IS differen l: individual larvae were found occupying a Single leaf tie over the course of the season. In selecting pre-existing leaf ties for colonization sites, the leaf tiers did not discriminate between ties of difJerent ages. On average, one-third of the leaves on a branch were incorporated into a leaf tie at some time during the season. Despite their abundance, leaf ties in this system appear to be a limiting resource. Queen’s University Biological Station Species List: Butterflies and Moths The current list has been compiled by Dr. Ivy Schoepf, QUBS Research Coordinator, in 2018 and includes data gathered by direct observation, collected by researchers at the station and/or assembled using digital distribution maps. The list is based on a previous list of moths created by Kit E. Muma in June 2008 and of butterflies created by Mark Conboy in March 2011; and has been updated using resources from The Natural Heritage Information Centre (April 2018); The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (February 2018); iNaturalist and GBIF.
