The directory also serves as a means of improving communications among people. The idea for the directory arose from the desire to make information about Aboriginal organizations more available to the public. This directory was first published in 1975 and has grown considerably since its initial edition, which had 16 pages compared to the 100 pages of the present edition. The directory reflects the vitality and diversity of Aboriginal cultural traditions, organizations, and enterprises. The editorial committee has made every effort to present in this directory an accurate and up-to-date listing. Fax numbers, Email addresses and Websites have been included whenever available. Inevitably, errors and omissions will have occurred in the revising and updating of this Directory, and the committee would greatly appreciate receiving information about such oversights, as well as changes and new information to be included in a future revision. Please call, fax or write to the Aboriginal Friendship Committee, Fort Garry United Church, using the information on the next page.

LECLAIRE With a Soi1 Map covering Townships 32 to 42 in Ranges 24 to 29 west of the Principal Meridian, exclusive of those portions in forest reserves. MANITOBA SOIL SURVEY CANADA DEPARTMENT of AGRICULTURE, MANITOBA DEPARTMENT of AGRICULTURE AND CONSERVATION, LANDS BRANCH, MANITOBA DEPART~~ENT of MINES AND NATURAL RESOURCES, AND DEPARTMENT OF SOIL SCIENCE, THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA. Report published by the Manitoba Departmeni of Agriculture and Conservation. Map published by Canada Department of Agriculture. Preface THE DETAILED RECONNAISSANCE SOIL SURVEY of the Swan River Map Sheet Area is the thirteenth of a series of reports devoted to the description of the soils of Manitoba as determined through the work of the Manitoba Soi1 Survey. The abject of the survey was to obtain the essential facts about the soils of the area- their kind, distribution and agricultural features. The publication consists of two parts: a coloured soi1 map and a report. In the survey of the Swan River map area, various mapping units were used in different portions of the mapped area. This procedure enabled the use of the mapping units best suited to the different patterns of soi1 variation throughout the area. Soi1 series and phases of series were mapped on the lacustrine deposits of the lowland area, where individual series and phases occur in large continuous areas. Soi1 associations and complexes were mapped on the mountain slopes and on boulder till deposits in the lowland area, Here the individual soi1 series occur in intricate patterns and could not be mapped separately on a reconnaissance survey.

  • The Wheat King
Almon James Cotton(1858-1942) was born in Ontario, and after an unsuccesful farming experience there moved to southern Manitoba in 1888. In Treherne he became known as Manitoba’s “Wheat King” because of the size and quality of his crops. At the turn of the century Cot- ton moved again, this time to the Swan River Valley in Manitoba, where he found sufficient land to provide working farms for all his sons. Unlike most early farmers, Cotton preserved extensive accounts and a massive cor- respondence, including hundreds of letters to prospective immigrants tothe Canadian West. This volume of selected letters and papers provides an intimate glimpse into the world of the rural prairies before World War I. Cotton’s comments on farming, politics, religion, immigration, and western boosterism – t mention only a few of the major topics he discusses – delivered in the brusk no-nonsense style of the farming community. His remarks shed con- siderable light on a fascinating personality from a key period of western settlement. An avid amateur photographer, Cotton also left a large collection of photographs used to illustrate this volume. PREVIOUS PUBLICATIONS OF THE MANITOBA RECORD SOCIETY 1. W. L.
