Hofstetter2 9 1 Assistant Director-Research, USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Asheville, NC, 28804 2Assistant Professor, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5018 Abstract Bark beetles are among the most ecologically and economically influential organisms in forest ecosystems worldwide. These important organisms are consistently associated in complex symbioses with fungi. Despite this, little is known of the net impacts of the fungi on their vectors, and mites are often completely overlooked. In this chapter, we will describe interactions involving the southern pine beetle (SPB), among the most economically damaging of North American forest insects. We examine SPB interactions with mites, fungi, and other microbes, following the natural temporal progression from beetle attack to offspring emergence from trees. Associations with fungi are universal within bark beetles. Many beetle species possess specialized structures, termed mycangia, for the transport of fungi. The SPB consistently carries three main Keywords fungi and numerous mites into the trees it attacks. One fungus, Ophiostoma minus, is carried phoretically on the SPB exoskeleton and by phoretic mites. actinomycetes symbiosis The mycangium of each female SPB may contain a pure culture of either Dendroctonus frontalis Ceratocystiopsis ranaculosus or Entomocorticium sp. A. The mycangial fungi Ceratocystiopsis are, by definition, transferred in a specific fashion. The SPB possesses two types Entomocorticiun of gland cells associated with the mycangium. The role of these cells and their mycangium products remains unknown. Preliminary studies have observed yeast-like fungal Ophiostoma minus, spores in the mycangium and several surrounding tubes that presumably carry secreted chemicals from gland cells (or bacteria) to the mycangium. -

Twenty-three new provincial records are reported and nine species, Uleiota debilis (LeConte), Uleiota dubius (Fabricius), Nausibius clavicornis (Kugelann), Ahasverus advena (Waltl), Cryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr), Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouvelle), Charaphloeus convexulus (LeConte), Chara- phloeus species nr. adustus, and Placonotus zimmermanni (LeConte) are newly recorded in the re- gion, one of which C. sp. nr. adustus, is newly recorded in Canada. It is a family of high economic importance, as some of the species are pests of stored goods; some of them are distributed throughout the world, mainly by human activities. Nine teen species of Silvanidae in ten genera are hereby recorded from Israel. Eleven of those are considered alien, of which four are established either in nature or indoor; eight species are either indigenous or have been introduced in the very remote past. Seven species, Psammoecus bipunctatus, P. triguttatus, Pa rasilvanus fairemairei, Silvanus castaneus, S. inarmatus, S. ?mediocris and Uleiota planatus, are recorded from Israel for the first time. Airaphilus syriacus was recorded only once in 1913; its status is doubtful. A. abeillei may occur in Israel, although no material is available. Twelve species are associated with stored products, although only three, Ahasverus advena, Oryzaephilus suri na- mensis and O. mercator, are of distinct economic importance; the rest are either rare or only occasionally intercepted on imported goods. Accepted 19 October, 2009 This study aims to assess the influence of temperature and food type on the instantaneous population growth rate of Cathartus quadricollis (Guerin-Meneville). ri was evaluated at 20, 25, 30 and 35°C in association with broken maize, wheat, sorghum and rice, maize flour and wheat bran. The optimum development temperature was also estimated for each food. The instantaneous growth rate of C. quadricollis was influenced by temperature and food type. ri values were low at the 20°C in all food types and increased at 25°C. There was a slight reduction at 30°C, but there was no insect development at 35°C, except for maize flour, with low ri (instantaneous population growth rate) values. Optimum temperature for C. quadricollis growth ranged from 26.26 to 27.14°C for the most suitable foods (broken maize, wheat and sorghum and maize flour). Under favorable conditions of food and temperature, C. quadricollis showed high population growth values in relation to other stored-product pests, indicating that this species has reproductive potential to become an important stored-product pest. -

E-mail: [email protected] Introduction Beetles are one of the most investigated orders of insects in Lithuania, however knowledge on distribution of many uncommon species remains very poor. There is still a lack of information about spreading of many species in Lithuania. Silvanidae beetles are not being an exception. The first notes on silvanids were published in 1960 in Lithuania and only one species - Oryzephilus surinamensis L. (Pileckis, 1960) was mentioned. Many short communications on the findings of other species of silvanids might be found in the latest publications (Pileckis, 1968; Miländer, 1984; Gaidien ė & Ferenca, 1988; Gaidien ė, 1993; Monsevi čius, 1997; Šablevi čius, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2011; Monsevi čius & Pankevi čius, 2001; Ehnström et al ., 2003; Ferenca, 2004; Ivinskis et al ., 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009; Ferenca et al ., 2006, 2007; Butvila et al ., 2007; Alekseev, 2008; Vaivilavi čius, 2008; Inokaitis, 2009). Currently 8 species of Silvanidae are known in Lithuania (Tamutis et al ., 2011). Two species: Nausibius clavicornis (Kugellan, 1794) and Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel, 1889) are listed in several European catalogues or lists (Silfverberg, 1992, 2004; Lundberg & Gustafsson, 1995; Halstead et al ., 2007; Ślipinski, 2011), this information however is still unconfirmed by local coleopterologists.
