ABSTRACT Agadatantra (Ayurvedic toxicology) being the sixth branch of Ashtaanga Ayurveda deals with the study of Jaangam (animate) and (Sthavara) inanimate poisons, their symptoms and management. Here is an attempt to collect all references regarding Sarpa Visha described in Brihattrayi. As theory and practice are the two wings of knowledge, literature review is the foundation of applied sciences. Ancient man is forests dweller. There is a dire need of protection from plant and animal poisoning, hence branch of Agadatantra (toxicology) is well established at that time. Material and methods: Brihattrayi (Major classics) of Ayurveda had been referred for literature review. Past studies and researches regarding the topic also been probed. Objectives: To present a comprehensive account of snake management in Ayurveda. Discussion: Data is presented under the headings of snake identification, specific signs and symptoms and Vega (stage) wise treatment with Agadas and role of Agadatantra in snakebite management as a first aid. Conclusion: Systematically presented data will prove a ready reckoner for UG, PG Scholars and researchers, zoologists for easy referencing. Snake bite management through different antidotes mentioned as Agadas in classical texts. These formulations need to be researched with modern parameters of Invivo and Invitro studies. ABSTRACT: - Depressive disorders commonly affect wide population due to causative factors such as irregular food habits, peer pressures and mental stress. Traditional Ayurvedic literature reveals that the premonitory symptoms of Unmada and Vishad term used in ayurvedic classics can be co-related with symptoms of depression denoting restricted or hypokinetic activities of speech, body and mind. In management of depressive disorders various herbal and herbo-mineral formulations are prescribed in Ayurvedic system. KEY WORDS: - Vishad, depression, Unmada, Chikitsa INTRODUCTION: - Depression is a mood disorder characterized by loss of interest, feelings of guilt, reduced desire of sex etc. Depressive disorders commonly affect wide population due to causative factors such as irregular food habits, peer pressures and mental stress. It is currently believed that depression is primarily the result of biochemical alterations in the brain. Recurrent episodes of this disorder lead into chronic state of disease. Traditional ayurvedic literature reveals that changes in dietary and lifestyle habits leads to disturb physiological as well mental attributes. Imbalance in the equilibrium of the mental and physical attributes, results in depletion of Dhriti (retaining power of mind), Smriti (hampered memory), Bhuddhi (hampered intellect) Thus, predisposing to occur any of psycho-somatic disorders as well mental illness such as Unmada [Insanity], Apasmar (Epilepsy). The pre- monitory symptoms of Unmada can be co-related with symptoms of depression as both are seen to be similar i.e., emptiness in thought, dysfunction of intellect and impairment of memory. -

P.C & Shaiju Krishnan PG Scholar Abstract- Panchakarma is referred as penta-biopurificatory process. Virechana Karma is one among Panchakarma; by which orally administered drug acts on internal Dosha especially Pitta Dosha and expel them out of the body through Guda. Psoriasis is a common chronic skin disorder of autoimmune origin. A 42 year old male patient c/o itching overhead, behind the ears, nails, lower back and legs since 2 years and while itching he gets whitish powder. He has consulted a dermatologist and has taken modern medicine. He got symptomatic relief. As soon as he stops medicines, the condition worsens and reoccurrence of disease was going on. Meanwhile severe burning sensation on chest was also happened. So he has planned to take Ayurveda treatment for the same. There was no history of any systemic illness. The present case was diagnosed as psoriasis from a detailed history taking and clinical examination. A positive family history was noted. A classical way of Virechana Karma was planned with Manibhadra Churna. After Virechana, Samyaka Shudhi Lakshana was achieved; symptoms such as itching, erythema, scaling, candle grease sign and Auspitz sign were not found. Reoccurrence of disease was not found even after 2nd follow up. Keywords: virechana, psoriasis, manibhadra churna, kushta. -

Asian Medicine 4 (2008) 263–279 brill.nl/asme The Sikh Foundations of Ayurveda Neil Krishan Aggarwal Abstract This paper explores how Sikh scriptures establish a unique claim to Ayurvedic knowledge. After considering Ayurvedic creation myths in the classical Sanskrit canon, passages from Sikh liturgi- cal texts are presented to show how Ayurveda is refashioned to meet the exigencies of Sikh theol- ogy. The Sikh texts are then analysed through their relationship with general Puranic literatures and the historical context of Hindu-Sikh relations. Finally, the Indian government’s current propagation of Ayurveda is scrutinised to demonstrate its affiliation with one particular religion to the possible exclusion of others. The Sikh example provides a glimpse into local cultures of Ayurveda before the professionalisation and standardisation of Ayurvedic practice in India’s post-independence period and may serve as a model for understanding other traditions. Keywords Ayurveda, Hindu and Sikh identity, Sanskritisation, Dasam Granth, Udasis, Sikhism Scholars of South Asia who study Ayurveda have overwhelmingly concen- trated on the classical Sanskrit canon of Suśruta, Caraka, and Vāgbhata.̣ This paper departs from that line of inquiry by examining the sources for a Sikh Ayurveda. Sikh religious texts such as the Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth contest the very underpinnings of Ayurveda found in Sanskrit texts. Historical research suggests that the Udāsī Sikh sect incorporated these two scriptures within their religious curriculum and also spread Ayurveda throughout north India before the post-independence period. The rise of a government-regulated form of Ayurveda has led to the proliferation of pro- fessional degree colleges, but the fact that Udāsī monasteries still exist raises the possibility of a continuous medical heritage with its own set of divergent practices.
