HEAD TEACHER’S WELCOME FROM MISS CRAIGC.

Hello there - My name is Yvonne Craig and I want to tell you how very proud I am to be the Head Teacher of our wonderful, fully inclusive, child centred, family orientated, community primary school - Ewanrigg Junior School.

I have been Headteacher here since September 2003 and I feel very privileged to be part of such a hard working staff, all of whom are very dedicated to the children of our school and who are full of fun. I am grateful for our conscientious governors; our fabulous and interesting children, our families and the local community. Before coming to Ewanrigg, I was a Headteacher for three years at Eskdale School and prior to that, I was a teacher at Jericho School, Whitehaven for twelve years. During my 30 years of teaching I have witnessed many governmental changes in education but I have always kept true to my principles that teaching and learning should be about the individual and should be suited to the needs of the child! I believe that education should be fun and should prepare our children for life!

I hope you will find the information on our website and Facebook page an interesting and useful read. It should provide you with a flavour of our school and I hope that it entices you to come and see us! When you visit us you will see a happy school with very hard working and committed staff; children who are pleased to be here and who are achieving and you will also see the local community and parents/ carers supporting us. Our website photo gallery and closed, secure, members only Facebook page are a joy - please take a look.

We are working hard to develop what we do and we are always undertaking exciting new ventures that we believe will benefit our children and keep them safe. We are fully committed to doing the best for our children and they are paramount in all of our minds when making decisions. We are a large team here and it is through that team pulling together that we create a place where exceptional education can be witnessed first-hand and where respect is central to all activities. A place where children can be all they can be and a place where everyone has the chance to shine! Kindest regards and hope to see you and your family very soon.

We as a school will strive to provide your children with the best education, a positive environment and a caring place where all feel safe.

What is our School About? (Our Vision)

The Ewanrigg Junior School vision is to help our children “Be All You Can Be” by providing broad and balanced learning programmes, which suit the individual needs of every individual child in our care. In addition we ensure that our children are educated in a happy, healthy, safe, positive and pleasant atmosphere where they can enjoy their learning. That is why our vision is to:-

Be All You Can Be!

How do we achieve this? (Our Mission)

The Ewanrigg Junior School Mission is to provide our children with five opportunities every day at school. We provide opportunities for our children to LOOK at and after the world around them, each other and themselves; to LISTEN to the adults, themselves and each other; to LEARN through a broad and balanced curriculum; to LOVE and care for themselves, each other, the environment and the community in which they live and to LAUGH, enjoying what should be “the best years of their lives.” That is why our mission is to:

Look, listen, learn, love and laugh

Finding out about Ewanrigg School

Be All You Can Be! - 5 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Admission to the School

Our children transfer from the infant schools in Ewanrigg, Netherton and Grasslot and we work very closely with the three schools so that transition is as smooth as possible. Last year we launched the Maryport Community Schools Group including Ewanrigg Junior School, Grasslot, Netherton and Ellenborough & Ewanrigg infant schools. During the school year members of our staff visit the three infant schools to meet and talk with the children and infant school staff. We hold many transitions events for both Y1 and Y2 children, including Medieval Adventure Morning for Year 1 children and an open day for Year 1 children in the summer term. We also hold an Open Day for Year 2 children in the autumn term where the children can sample our curriculum and our lunches and an open morning for Y2 children and parents to tour our school and ask any questions.

All children are admitted into the school in accordance with the advice given in the General Admissions Policy produced by . When your child is admitted (s) he will be placed in a registration group. Your child will also learn with other teachers in the teaching team, particularly in Maths and English as we teach the children in learning groups based on their needs rather than their age.

Throughout the school day your child will have the opportunity to work as part of a class group, in a smaller working group, or complete some pieces of work on his/her own.

The vast majority of our children are very able and can complete their learning quite successfully. There are some children however, who experience challenges when learning. Here at Ewanrigg Junior School, we recognize such challenges and we endeavour to give the children additional help to try and overcome their difficulties using the facilities and the expertise of our staff and our Special Educational Needs & Disabilities leaders Miss Craig and Mrs McAllister. Our Senior Learning Mentor, Mrs Dawson, can also support children and families. If in doubt, please ring and ask to speak to Mrs Dawson or Mrs McAllister.

SAFEGUARDING

Safeguarding and protecting children is an essential part of EJS life. We have a team of dedicated and highly trained staff, led by the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Miss Craig, who deal quickly and effectively with any safeguarding worries. Here at EJS, we have a multi-agency approach and work very closely with social services, the police, Health Services, Barnardos and various voluntary agencies to help and support families should they need it.

Should we have a concern regarding a child’s safety, we quite rightly, have an obligation to report this to other agencies, including both the police and social care, as does any other school or child care provider.

EJS is also part of the Operation Encompass scheme, a new initiative in Cumbria that has been very successful in Cleveland and Hartlepool. This scheme allows the police to notify school of any domestic abuse issues that occur in the family home thus enabling school to support both the family and the child.

I know that everyone wants EJS children to be safe and we vow to do everything in our power to ensure that we do everything we can to achieve this.

Breakfast Club As a school we are keenly aware that for some parents the working day may start well before 9.00am. To help accommodate some of the problems associated with this Barnardos run a Breakfast Club in school from 7.45 am to 9.00am on each school day during term time. Please contact Louise Bainbridge at the Barnardo’s Centre on 01900 604822 for further details.

Punctuality We encourage all our children to arrive at school in good time for the start of the day. Children need to arrive promptly at school at 8.50am when lessons begin. If for some genuine reason however, your child is late, (s) he should still make every effort to come to school and it is helpful and keeps your child safe, if you contact the school office to let us know your child is on his/her way.

Attendance and Absences from School If your child is away from school for any reason it is a legal obligation that you let us know in writing or by telephone the reason for the child’s absence EVERY day. It is essential that parents telephone school to explain their child’s absence, BEFORE registers close at 9:15. Should school not receive such a call to explain your child’s absence, in order to help keep your child safe, school is legally bound to contact home to ascertain your child’s whereabouts. If parents cannot be contacted, other relatives and friends listed as emergency contacts will receive a telephone call. Please note, to keep your child safe, if we cannot find out where your child is by 10 o’clock, school may contact the Police for help. Parents should also note that school is required by the government to keep a detailed record of attendance for every child on our school roll. If you wish your child to be out of school for any reason during the school day, please notify your child’s class teacher, in writing.

Please note that in order to keep our children safe, no child will be allowed out of school to walk home alone other than at home time. At all other times of day, an appropriate adult must come to school and sign your child(ren) out.

Be All You Can Be! - 9 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

The government attendance target for every individual child stands at 95%.

Attendance 100% No Learning missed Wonderful! 95% 1 week and 4 days of missed learning Great! 90% 3 weeks and 3 days of missed learning You need to improve! 85% 5 weeks and 3 days of missed learning We are worried! 80% 7 weeks and 3 days of missed learning We are very worried! 75% 9 weeks and 2 day of missed learning We are very concerned!

Persistent unexplained absence may trigger a Local Authority attendance investigation as local authority attendance officers monitor our registers every term. To protect you and your child from investigation prosecution, we ask you to notify us immediately of any absence and let us support you and your child with any attendance needs. Our attendance officer is Mrs Dawson.

100% Attendance Awards

Holidays in Term Time

Details of 19-20 and 20-21, term dates are available at the back of this handbook. As you may be aware, new government laws were passed in 2013 regarding holidays in term time. Please note that the Head Teacher is no longer able to grant a holiday taken in term time and school is legally obliged to record any holiday absence as an unauthorised absence (truancy), which may result in Local Authority action, up to and including a fine of £60 per child per parent.

Parents can write a letter to the Headteacher, Miss Craig, to ask for consideration to be given for a child to have a leave of absence granted for exceptional circumstances, but holidays are NOT included in this.

School Security

All members of staff at Ewanrigg Junior School have extensive security checks including proof of identity, proof of qualifications and Disclosure and Barring Checks. All members of staff and visitors have to wear identification lanyards and badges and all visitors and staff have to visit the school main office and sign in before coming into any contact with our children. Entrance can only be gained to school via biometric fingerprint recognition. Doors and play areas are locked during the school day and although this may be inconvenient, it is to keep our children safe! We courteously ask that parents only enter

Be All You Can Be! - 10 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh! school via the school office and should anyone see anything that worries them, please report the matter immediately to the school office.

Homework

Our children follow a set homework pattern on certain evenings of the week. Homework is important and we have tried to organise homework so that the children still have time during the week to follow other activities in which they might be interested. All our children must take reading books home every night and ask that you, as a parent, help your child by trying to listen to him/her read at least 4 times a week. Parents can also request additional work when a child is undergoing a long period of absence. HOMEWORK!

Behaviour Management

Here at Ewanrigg Junior School we only have one rule. To treat others and others property as we want others to treat us and ours!

Good discipline is extremely important if a school is to function successfully. We are proud of the caring, respectful relationship, which exists, between our pupils, our parents and our members of staff. Our children respond to this because they know that their teachers are caring and enthusiastic and are prepared to listen and show an interest in them. The general discipline of the school is based on a positive rather than a negative approach. Children earn rewards that recognise good work, good behaviour or good manners. Children can earn certificates House Points and praise texts home which are celebrated in Celebration Assemblies, which are featured on our Facebook page.

Children will be allocated a team colour and can earn points for their team from any adult, at any point during the school day. These points are collected by each adult in school and are then added to the team weekly running total. There will be rewards each half term for the winning team.

TEAM COLOURS ARE:

White - Mrs McAllister Red – Mr Ritson Yellow – Mrs Anderson / Miss Baker

Blue – Miss Chilton Black – Mr Hope Green – Miss Lancaster

Be All You Can Be! - 14 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Children are also encouraged to face up to any inappropriate behaviour

Behaviour Management Time with the Head Miss Craig, Assistant Head Mrs S McGlasson (Behaviour) or Mr D Ritson takes place for any child who breaks the golden rule, or the clear set of guidelines that have been drawn up and agreed by every child. When this happens the children will attend a Behaviour Management session with Miss Craig, Assistant Head Mrs S McGlasson (Behaviour) or Mr D Ritson for half hour during Thursday lunchtime or may receive a Behaviour Mark. A text is sent to the child’s parent to explain that their child has attended Behaviour Management and school asks parents to discuss the matter with their child.

If a child continues to behave in an inappropriate manner, a meeting will be arranged with the Head, Miss Craig or Mrs McGlasson to discuss the different options available to promote appropriate behaviour.

At all times we encourage the development of self-discipline. To do this successfully our children are made aware of the boundaries between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour. Class teachers in the classroom discuss our school guidelines and expectations regularly, as does Miss Craig in assemblies. Parents need to note that school and home are two very different places and as such, school and home may have different boundaries regarding what is appropriate and what is not. We also use restorative justice where by children are encouraged to suggest their own consequence to an inappropriate action or choice. Surprisingly their consequences are sometimes even harsher than ours!

For those children who have particular needs, we run emotional management, socialisation (Learning to Get Along) and nurturing groups to help these children develop their personal and social learning. We look to parents to support our endeavours to promote self-discipline and appropriate behaviour patterns. We ask that you then sign a Home/School Agreement with the school at the start of Year 3 to show that you fully support the promotion of good behaviour at all times.

Our Behaviour Leader is Mrs S McGlasson, Deputy Behaviour Lead is Mr D Ritson

Be All You Can Be! - 15 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Bullying

Ewanrigg Junior School is a Kidsafe school and we will not tolerate bullying!

Every child and adult has the right to feel safe and secure at school and we work hard in lessons and in assemblies to help children understand what is bullying and what is not.

We have a simple way to define bullying taken from the Kidsafe programme.

We ask children to remember the word STOP which stands for

Several Times On Purpose.

The culture in school is for children to ask an adult for help. Mini Police / EJS Buddies report any potential bullying issues. Children are asked to report any “yukky” feelings.

Our Senior Learning Mentor, Mrs Dawson and Mrs Hampson are Kidsafe trained.

Progress Meetings and the Availability of the Staff

Each year during the Summer Term we invite the parents of the children who are either starting the school for the first time, or are transferring from our Infants Schools to our school. This gives each parent the opportunity to meet with the Head, Miss Craig and the members of the teaching team who will be looking after their child and to see the school at work.

At the meeting parents are also told about the Vision and the Mission of our school, and are given answers to any questions they may have about the school life in general.

To operate the National Curriculum successfully you must be given the opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher at regular intervals. With this in mind, Progress

Be All You Can Be! - 16 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Meetings are specifically arranged so you can see your child’s teacher and discuss progress and future development in greater depth and detail.

If at any time you are anxious about any aspect of your child’s education you are most welcome to contact the school office, so that an appointment can be made at a mutually convenient time for you and the class teacher, who should always be the person who you talk to FIRST about any learning issues. If you are still not satisfied with the outcome, you are then welcome to make a similarly, mutually convenient appointment time with the Head, Miss Craig.

Please remember that complex issues CANNOT be dealt with at 9.00 when teachers have 30 children waiting for them!

Due to our increasing numbers, and by popular demand, we now hold an “Open Morning” for Y2 parents early in the autumn term, so that parents have a chance to see our school and ourselves in action! Progress meetings for Parents take place once every term. Parents receive an annual written report once a year in July.

School Council We launched our Ewanrigg Junior School Council in 2006 and we are delighted with the maturity shown by our councillors. Each class votes for two councillors, who then meet regularly to discuss school matters. There is a Chair to the School Council, a Treasurer and a Minute Secretary who has to take notes and distribute them to all of the classes, the staff room and to Miss Craig. The Council have so far been heavily involved in our Easter Extravaganza; choosing lunchtime play equipment; and raising money towards their own funds. Our councillors are also part of Maryport Joint Schools Council and are involved in activates and projects with other schools.

School Councillors report to Miss Bowman

School Meals

All our children have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a cafeteria-style lunch and can choose their meal from at least two different menus, sandwiches and salads and a dessert each day. Full time members of the catering staff freshly cook the meals on the premises each morning. Menus are available at the back of this handbook.

Full facilities are also available for those children who prefer to eat sandwiches for their lunch.

We make every effort to encourage the children to eat their lunch, whilst at the same time being aware that not everyone can like all that is provided. The children are encouraged to sample the food they are not certain about, but if they find that it is not to their taste they can leave it. We try to make lunchtime a social occasion whilst at the same time encouraging good table manners. All menus are available on our EJS Website.

MONEY COLLECTION

1. Money is due for dinners EVERY Monday morning. Dinner money must be paid in advance – you pay on Monday for your child’s dinners for that week!

2. Online Money App: this allows you to pay online using your card for dinner money and trips by card. We can now take card payment at the school office. Log onto the internet: www.eduspot.co.uk you need to provide school with a valid email and phone number. You will receive a welcome message with password by txt from school to use for the first time

3. If you cannot pay using the online system money should be sent to school in an envelope or a Money Pocket (available from the school office) with your child’s name and class on the front as well as the amount of money and what it is for. Here is an example:

Jaden Brown Class 2 Dinner Money £11.55

4. Children should take their envelope to their class during registration. The teacher will collect any money envelopes and will put them into the collection pot.

5. The collection pot will then be sent to the school office.

6. This procedure will be repeated every morning to collect any late dinner money or other money.

Be All You Can Be! - 18 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

7. Change from money sent into school, savings cards or any other returns will not come home until FRIDAY! Teachers will distribute any school office returns, change or savings cards during Friday afternoon registration. Children will be instructed to put any returns into their locker, bag or coat. Please make sure your child has a bag and coat! This means that everyone understands that there is only ONE returns day! This should help you to remember to check your child’s bag on Friday afternoon, if you are expecting anything to be returned from the school office.

8. Online payment returns will be debited back to your card end of each term

9. If your child is absent on Friday, any returns will be given out the following Friday.

10. Should you repeatedly not pay for your child’s dinners governors may decide to remove your right to have a dinner provided for your child and you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch. 11. Presently school dinners cost £2.31 per day £11.55 per week to be paid Monday morning in advance.

OTHER MONEY CHANGES!

Firstly, can I thank all parents who pay promptly for dinners, trips etc? The vast majority of parents so this and I thank you whole-heartedly for this!

Sadly however, some parents do not pay promptly and on occasion, we are let down by parents who promise to pay for visits and then do not pay up. This is not fair on those parents who do pay and governors will do all they can to recoup that money.

School are now also run as businesses and the Head and governors are under pressure to make the books balance and are accountable to external auditors. Due to the previously mentioned debts, governors have had to change the way that we collect trip money. Here they are.

1. All deposits for residential and all pre-paid tickets (theatre etc) will be non-returnable. This will be clearly stated on the permission slip.

2. All residential trips MUST be paid for six weeks in advance in order for a child to be able to go. No money will be able to be returned as school is charged for the place and have to pay regardless, thus losing money from the school budget.

3. All day trips MUST be paid for one week in advance in order for the child to be able to go.

4. Sadly, less places and tickets will initially have to be purchased so that we have less wastage. Closing dates will be clearly stated and kept to.

5. If any money is owed to the School, the office staff cannot accept any other money for trips etc. and therefore your child would not be able to join in any visits until all debts to the School is paid in full.

BUDDIES

We have a system of “peer budding” in our school. Children are chosen by staff and are known as Buddies. Buddies are regarded as responsible and caring pupils who assist staff and befriend children during playtimes and lunchtimes. Book Buddies look after all the books in school; Sports and Equipment Buddies help staff with equipment; whilst Office Buddies are office helpers; Computing Buddies support computing and information technology and Environment Buddies help to look after the environment. Ambassadors are our tour guides and meet and greet visitors. Children have to apply in writing for the post and have to sign a contract as these are very responsible positions. It is both an honour and a privilege to be chosen as one of our Buddies and children are very proud of such roles of responsibility.

Buddies report to Mrs Hampson Book Buddies report to Class Teacher Sport & Equipment buddies report to Mrs McGlasson Office Buddies report to Mrs Ditchburn & Mrs Moir Enviroment Buddies report to Mr Hope Computing Buddies report to Mrs Hampson Ambassadors report to Miss Craig Personal Assistants report to Class Teacher

This helps our children to build up independence, responsibility and accountability skills – all vital workplace and employability skills.

These jobs used to be called ‘Caps’ and the chosen child would wear a coloured cap but at the request of the children, the job titles were changed in September 2018 to something that the children viewed as being more mature and so ‘Caps’ became ‘Buddies.’

Mini Police Scheme

Ewanrigg Junior School was selected to be one of the first Mini Police Schools in Cumbria with only 28 schools currently being involved in the county. The Mini Police scheme is an interactive volunteering opportunity for 9-11 year olds, which follows a 3 step approach Education, Community and Reward.

The objective is to introduce these children to a positive experience of policing and to get them involved in the local community. PCSOs deliver education on policing priorities which is then cascaded down to the rest of the school delivered by the Mini Police. The children then become involved with community activities to enhance community confidence and pride such as litter picking and road safety. Our Mini Police also deliver safety sessions to the Key Stage 1 schools that are part of the Maryport Community Schools Group, which are Grasslot, Netherton and Ellenborough/Ewanrigg Infants. A reward follows the education and activity which is based on enrichment for the young people. Last year our Mini Police went to Head Quarters for riot training and we also had the police dogs in school for an afternoon.

A digital platform also encourages schools to embrace the Mini Police concept in their environment covering topics such as lesson plans, finding neighbourhood policing teams and sharing good practice. We are very pleased that a photograph of our EJS Mini Police has been chosen to represent the NATIONAL face of Mini Policing on Twitter.

The project is being promoted by the National Volunteer Police Cadets team encouraging all Police forces in the UK to take part.

The Mini Police project has now been in place for one year at EJS and it has been an extremely successful year. Our hard work and dedication to the project has been recognised not only locally but also throughout the county and nationwide. We have already been awarded Cumbria's Mini Police School of the year. One of our officers also received Cumbria's Mini Police Officer of the year. We are finalists in the Golden Apple Awards in the category of 'Best Community Initiative'. National recognition has meant that we are due to visit London next month (October 2019) to attend the Lord Ferrer Awards. These awards recognise outstanding contribution to volunteering in policing.

Family Learning

Family Learning lead is Mrs J Moir

We have been running numerous successful Family Learning courses here at Ewanrigg for several years now. The courses vary in length from one day to 10 weeks. We can offer the following courses:

 Art and Craft  Maths  English  Outdoor adventure days at Hawse End activity centre  Family/ Resilience  First Aid  Science

The sessions are fun filled and action packed! Most courses involve both adults and children working alongside each other and offer a fantastic opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time together on a 1:1 basis. It equips parents with the knowledge of how subjects are taught in school and gives you practical ways to help your child at home. Each course usually involves a couple of funded trips and or visits e.g. Walby Farm Park, Dove Cottage, Library, Castle, Asda shopping trip, Aquarium. The courses aren’t just for Mams and Dads, as we have had grandparents, aunties and uncles who have taken part and loved every minute working alongside their little ones!

Pupil Premium numbers at Ewanrigg Junior School

The percentage of PP students at Ewanrigg Junior School is higher than both the Cumbrian and national averages. Each of our year groups has a number of students who are eligible for PP funding 19/20.

Year Group Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Total Number of 9 19 21 24 73 PP students Number of 25 35 36 48 144 students PP as % of 36% 54% 58% 50% 51% total

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is additional funding to help schools close the attainment gap between children from low-income and other disadvantaged families and their peers. This includes children who are looked after by the local authority, those who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years (also known as Ever 6 FSM) and for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.

Here at EJS we recognise that not all children who are eligible for pupil premium will be socially disadvantaged and also that not all children that are disadvantaged will qualify for pupil premium. As a result we allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has identified as being socially disadvantaged and should be making better progress. The groups and individuals identified for support may change over the academic year.

We ensure that appropriate provision is made for children who belong to vulnerable groups and that socially disadvantaged children have their needs adequately assessed and met. The Pupil Premium budget at EJS is used to organise teaching and learning in order to meet the needs of all children in the best way including small teaching families and interventions.

Special Educational Needs

The school has a policy for children with Special Educational Needs that is available free to all parents on request and is available on our website. We endeavour to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all the children in our care. Some children may have special educational needs during their time in the school and in order to help them overcome these difficulties the Board of Governors has set in place certain resources to help these children access the curriculum. These measures ensure that the special needs of children are identified, assessed and provided for. The majority of the work is carried out by the Specialist Education Needs and Disabilities Lead, Mrs A McAllister , who, with the Board of Governors pays due regard to the Code of Practice when carrying out these duties. Children who need extra help in certain subjects are catered for either individually or in small groups. Quiet working periods are provided for children with the support of special needs staff. The Board does its best to secure the necessary provision for any pupil identified as having special educational needs and makes sure that all teachers in the school are aware of the importance of providing for these children. If there is concern about any child, teachers will consult parents immediately and together decide on the best approach. Sometimes help and support is given by outside agencies, such as Educational Psychologists or Specialist Teachers.

If after help in school it is felt that a full assessment of a child’s special needs is required, this is discussed with parents and then the formal stages of detailed assessment are followed. Parents will be informed and involved at all times.

The children who have special needs are treated in a sensitive and caring manner and are encouraged to be all they can be. If there are concerns about special needs education parents are invited to arrange to come to school to talk to teachers and the Specialist Education Needs and Disabilities Leader Mrs A McAllister. The Governor nominated with responsibility for Special Needs is Mrs J. Butler and she visits the school on a regular basis.

Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Leader (SENCO) is Mrs A McAllister. Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Governor is Mrs Butler.

The curriculum is the outline programme of everything our children learn whilst they are in school.

How do we present the Curriculum to the children?

With the approval of the Board of Governors, the members of the teaching staff have drawn up a programme of work for each of the subjects they teach. The programme is in line with the requirements of the New National Curriculum and provides a wealth of knowledge in each subject. It also sets down specific skills, which we hope the children will be transfer between subjects and eventually be able to use in later life. The most important part of the curriculum is the development of the English language including reading, writing, grammar, punctuation, and spelling, speaking and listening. All of these skills have an important part to play in the way in which we communicate with each other. Listening and speaking are very important, as it is in this manner that we do most of our communicating. We encourage our children to express their views clearly and stress the importance of listening carefully to the spoken word.

English

All children are taught a daily English lesson READING At EJS we strive to make all children confident and proficient readers who gain enjoyment, imagination and pleasure from the books they read at their own, personal level. In all year groups the development of reading is a priority. Each child is encouraged to thoroughly master initial reading skills. As they become more proficient they are introduced to more complicated reading strategies, which will help them to cope effectively with a wider range of reading materials.

Independent reading ‘The Accelerated Reader’ programme is a computerised programme that tests reading comprehension and the decoding of words. Students select books at their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension quiz on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and ‘Accelerated Reading’ designated complexity level. Children read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books at their individual book level.

Adults in school regularly listen to and read to children during class Register and Reading Time and during Guided Reading. IT IS ESSENTIAL that children take their reading book and Reading Record or Planner home EVERY NIGHT and spend time reading independently or to an adult.

We expect children to read to an adult at home at least four days each week.

Be All You Can Be! - 25 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Guided Reading

During English lessons children spend 20 minutes working closely in a small group on a book that they have been studying. This session may be led by the teacher or may be an independent task.

Reading Eggspress Reading Eggspress makes reading real books, improving spelling skills and building reading comprehension highly engaging for kids aged 7 to 13. The online reading programme is packed with hundreds of interactive reading activities, online children’s books and literacy games. And it really works! The children work through interactive lessons and activities at their own pace. The programme uses a highly motivating sequence of online reading lessons, activities and books that keep pupils engaged and on task. Reading Eggspress is used within school and we also encourage the children to use it outside of school too.

WRITING

We teach and encourage all children to be creative, imaginative writers whilst also ensuring that they have mastered the basic skills to be an accurate and effective writer. Writing skills are mainly taught in English lessons but are then used across the whole curriculum. Our children study a range of writing genres throughout their time with us and then apply said taught skills in their own writing pieces. Where possible, writing is linked to curriculum projects and can also take place outside of English lesson. It is essential for children to become editors; therefore, our children work with their ‘Clever Friend’ to edit their work and that of others to make improvements. Our children have a ‘Published Pieces Book’ where they display their final, perfect, edited writing work; thus creating a high quality collection of personal writing types. Our children are exceptionally proud of the work that is so displayed. Our English Leader is Miss A. Lancaster and Mrs H Chilton

Junior Spelling

All children at Ewanrigg Junior School are taught phonics and spelling in mixed age whole school family groups, based on individual spelling needs. Our spelling programme builds on the success of the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme taught at the infant schools and are designed to teach discrete daily sessions, progressing from simple basic letters and sounds at Junior Spelling 1, to more complex phonic knowledge and skills in Junior Spelling 6. We also have a higher attaining phonics group at Junior Spelling 7 for children who have completed and are secure in all levels 1 -6. In this group children concentrate on grammar for writing, higher level vocabulary, sentence work and complex spelling patterns which prepare them for SATS, secondary school and life. All children are assessed in the Summer Term and entered onto a Junior Spelling Level ready for the new academic year starting in September. Year Two children are also assessed during this term. Each child’s progress is monitored throughout the year to ensure any gaps in their learning are quickly identified. It is our aim for all children to learn at their own pace through the phonic programme, acquiring essential knowledge and skills to make them confident readers and spellers and filling any learning gaps they may have. Our expectation is that most children will have achieved all six levels of Junior Spelling by the end of Year 4.

Our Spelling Leader is Mrs L Anderson

Be All You Can Be! - 26 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Mathematics

All children are taught a daily numeracy lesson. BIG Maths Big Maths is a new approach to the teaching of mathematics in primary schools. Big Maths is based upon the principle that there are 4 core skills that lie at the heart of numeracy. These core skills form the platform for virtually all other maths skills and are affectionately known as :- CLIC. 1. C - Counting 2. L – Learn it’s 3. I – It’s Nothing New 4. C – Calculations Because it is so important for all children to make progress in all 4 core skills, 'Big Maths’ involves teaching through the CLIC phases every day in a fun, engaging and lively manner

SAFE We have also introduced the ‘SAFE’ element of Big Maths. This includes maths beyond core numbers skills:- S – Shape A – Amounts F – Fractions E – Explaining data

How Does ‘Big Maths’ Work? Your child will be assessed and placed into a ‘Big Maths’ group based on their level of ability and needs. Once a week the children will complete CLIC, Learn it and SAFE challenges.

Real Maths and Reasoning. At Ewanrigg Junior School we believe maths is vital and strive to prepare the children by teaching Maths which they can use in the ‘Real World’. Where possible lessons will apply to a ‘Real Life’ context or link directly to the project which the children are studying - e.g. shopping, decorating, planning trips, Romans. Reasoning skills will be developed to help children gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. They can then apply maths skills to different contexts and situations.

Science

Science is a very important aspect of the curriculum and teaches the children about the planet on which they live. It also provides them with an understanding of the process that is needed to live on its surface. The science syllabus is made up of a careful balance of experiments and investigations, which help the children come to terms with the scientific knowledge they need to know in our ever-increasing technical world. Our Science Leader are: Mr N Hope & Mrs A McAllister

Relationships and Sex Education

The Board of Governors has agreed that a programme of Relationships and Sex Education should be fully integrated into our science curriculum, with specific lessons for Y6 children. The subject is dealt with in a child-centred and sensitive manner, covering the aspects of changes to the body, how babies are made and born and how to have successful positive relationships.

Although this section of the science syllabus is mainly taught to the children in Year 5 & 6, as a parent you have the right to withdraw your child from such lessons if you think they are inappropriate. If you wish to withdraw your child from this aspect of the curriculum, please submit this request in writing to the Head, Miss Craig.

Our Sex & Relationship Leaders are Miss Y Craig and Mrs S McGlasson.

Design and Technology

Whenever possible we try to link design technology to the projects being taught in the class. The children are taught in mixed ability groups and are given equal opportunity to develop relevant skills. Design and technology skills are taught explicitly and incorporated into a design and make task. The children are given the opportunity to use a variety of medium, including paper, card, plastic and food.

Our Technology Leader are Mr D Ritson and Mr N Hope

Geography and History

The skills associated with geography and history are developed through a series of projects. All the projects have starting points within each subject which the children are able to understand before they move on to discover more detailed information about our planet and how its people have developed. Examples of these projects are: - Ancient Egypt, Romans, Tudors and Victorians.

Our History and Geography Leader are Mr D Ritson and Mr N Hope

Be All You Can Be! - 28 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

Art, Music and Performing Arts

Whenever possible we try and link Art & Design to the main projects being taught in the class, but the more creative skills, which each child needs to develop, are taught separately. The children are taught in mixed ability groups and are given an equal opportunity to develop their skills in drawing, painting, and 3D work, textiles, pattern & design. Throughout the Key Stage the children study in detail the work of well-known artists. They are encouraged to emulate this work and then express their own thoughts about the work of the artist in their own creation.

Our Arts Leaders are Miss A Lancaster & Mrs H Chilton Our Performing Arts Lead is Mr N Hope

Music

A great many of our children enjoy taking part in singing and instrumental work. We have specialist music teachers who visit the school on a weekly basis to encourage the children to become actively involved in making music. Through the music curriculum the children explore and develop their creative skills and, where possible, use their musical talents to become performers. Wherever possible children are given the opportunity to be given individual music tuition and take part in a school choir. Presently our children can study violin, clarinet, saxophone, guitars and drumming.

Music Award We are proud to have achieved the coveted School Music Mark recently which recognises the success of musical education and opportunities provided in our school. This reflects our school vision and helps us to give all children the chance to shine.

“Music Mark believes in the fundamental right to experience a high-quality music education for all children and young people, in and out of their schools.” Jem Shuttleworth, Chief Executive

Performing Arts

We are very proud of our Performing Arts opportunities here at Ewanrigg Junior School and it is a joy to watch our children performing on stage. Our budding performers have many chances to shine throughout their school career. We hold a ‘Ewanrigg’s Got Talent’ show at The Wave Centre, Maryport during November, where children showcase their said talents on stage to family, friends and community members. Over the years, we have had musicians, magicians, singers, dancers, gymnasts, comedians and impressionists.

Money raised from this ventures helps to fund our entry into the national Rock Challenge programme, which we have entered for the last 11 years, receiving our ‘Long Standing Rock Challenge Achievement Award’ last year. Here children choreograph and design a dance that tells a story with a moral and this is then

Be All You Can Be! - 29 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh! showcased at The Sands Centre, Carlisle, where the children perform with other children from all over the county. We are proud to say that EJS has won two national Rock Challenge Awards and was invited to showcase one of our productions on a national theatre stage.

Children also perform during the summer term in their year groups, in our annual ‘End of Year Performances,’ which recently have included ‘The King and I,’ ‘Grease,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Robin in Da Hood.’ During these shows, children participate in singing, acting, dancing, lighting, sound and stage direction and props and any money raised is fed back into our ‘Performing Arts’ fund to improve our stage equipment.

We are proud that many of our children have gone on to have careers in the field of performing arts including playing instruments in bands and performing on cruise ships. Many children are involved in Performing Arts local clubs and we endeavour to make sure our children visit the theatre regularly watching such diverse performances as pantomimes and opera.

Our Arts Leaders are Mrs A Lancaster & Mrs H Chilton

Religious Education

Our school is not affiliated to any particular church. Consequently our programme of Religious Education is not of a denominational nature. Our programme of study in Religious Education follows the recommendations of the Cumbria Agreed Syllabus.

In the main the programme is orientated to the Christian religion. However, the children are also introduced to major religions from other parts of the world. It is hoped that from this work they will become aware of the significance religion has for many people and consider their own beliefs, values and attitudes. We have close links and visit our local church, All Soul’s, Netherton, at least three times a year showcasing a Nativity Play at Christmas; a Passion Play at Easter and an Award Presentation in summer.

If, as a parent you feel that the religious views of your family differ from those being taught throughout the school, you may, after consultation with the Head, Miss Craig, withdraw your child from any part of the programme of Religious Education. Your child will then follow a programme of study that has been agreed by you as his/her parent and the school. If you do wish to withdraw your child from this aspect of the curriculum, please request this in writing, to the Head, Miss Craig. Please note that children can also be withdrawn from the daily act of collective worship. If parents want to do this, they need to submit a request in writing, to the Head, Miss Craig.

Physical Education

It is our aim at Ewanrigg Junior School to promote physical activity as part of healthy living. As part of our Physical Education programme each child takes part in an indoor P.E. lesson every week. During the lesson (s)he may be taking part in gymnastics activities using a variety of large and small apparatus, or be involved in a programme of modern dance. Throughout the year each class is also timetabled to take part in a weekly games lesson using either the playground or the school field. The children are taught the basic skills required to compete in team games such as football, rugby, hockey, rounders and cricket. They also have the opportunity where appropriate, to take part in cross country running and athletics.

Throughout the year we try and take advantage of the various coaching schemes that are designed specially for schools, by the major sporting bodies throughout the county. Ewanrigg Junior School is also proud to have strong links with our local secondary School Netherhall.

During the course of the year, children are taken each week to the Ellenside Pool at Netherhall School where they are given instruction to help them learn to swim. Members of the pool staff and our own teachers act as the instructors. Every child will receive a minimum of 10 weeks swimming every year. As Maryport is a coastal town, EJS places a high priority on teaching all children to swim.

At Ewanrigg School the children are encouraged to compete against themselves in the first instance; in the hope they will try to raise their own standard of performance in as many aspects of competitive sport as possible. As their confidence and their level of skill increases, they are encouraged to take part in organised competitions against teams and individual children of their own age from other schools in the area. Throughout the year Inter-School fixtures are arranged in football, rugby, netball, rounders, cricket, cross country running and swimming.

The Daily Mile Challenge

As part of our aim to keep our children fit, safe and healthy, all staff and children walk, jog or sprint a mile per day. Every child whatever their circumstance, age or ability is able to participate. By exercising regularly, children are proven to be healthier, happier and fitter and by walking every day we hope to instil said healthy habits at a young age. The community love to watch the children every day and they share a ‘hello or a smile’ and a sneaky mince pie during our Christmas Community Walk. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS HIS/HER SCHOOL PE KIT IN THEIR LOCKER MONDAY – FRIDAY EVERY WEEK Our Physical Activities in School Leader are Mrs S McGlasson and Mrs A McAllister

Global Learning

Global learning teaches children to view the world as a wider whole. Here at Ewanrigg children learn about issues which effect children around the world including; fair trade, poverty, water use and equality. As well as learning about different countries and cultures, Ewanrigg children learn to respect difference and see themselves as global citizens who can all make their mark on the world. Global learning allows children to become more engaged in their learning, receive a deeper understanding of issues facing the world and see that they can really make a difference. We were very proud to receive an Italian exchange teacher so children could learn about other cultures first hand.

Our Global Learning Leader is Mr D Ritson

Modern Foreign Languages

Ewanrigg is very proud to provide modern foreign languages for our children. Many professionals in the area remark on the fantastic grasp of languages our children gain. Learning languages is incredibly important. Research shows children who learn a new language attain better critical thinking skills, problem solving and increase in confidence. Learning a new language is incredibly fun and here at Ewanrigg we are committed to giving every child the opportunity to speak, read and write in a new language.

Our Modern Foreign Languages Leader is Miss O Bowman & Mrs Dawson

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education, including BRITISH VALUES Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education has become an area of focus here at Ewanrigg Junior School as we develop individual and group programmes that will equip and enable our children to cope with the many complexities of twenty first century life. Here at Ewanrigg Junior School we work hard to provide exciting and worthwhile life skills programmes including Anger Management, Kidsafe and Learning to Get Along groups for our children. We also study the DFE designated fundamental and core British Values, which are:-

• democracy • the rule of law • individual liberty • mutual respect • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At EJS children will encounter these principles throughout everyday school life and through assemblies and direct teaching during Personal Studies lessons. These core values are held dear at EJS

Computing

All our children have regular use of our two computer suites, laptops and android tablets where they are taught the basic skills that will enable them to use computers as a major means of communication. In addition, many of our learning programmes are, where possible are, linked to appropriate computer programmes. Through Computing the children are given the opportunity to use the computers we have in school to explore the different ways in which such technology can be used in society today. Mrs. R Hampson liaises with teaching staff when developing learning opportunities and she then co-ordinates and delivers computing to the children.

We put a high priority on teaching the children about e–safety every day, with both staff and children receiving regular e-safety training. We also offer regular E-Safety training sessions for parents.

Our Computing Leader is Mrs. Hampson

What can I do to help my child?

At regular intervals throughout the year you will be invited into school to discuss your child’s progress with his/her teacher and talk about what targets have been set for your child. At the end of each school year you will also be sent a written report clearly outlining your child’s progress and indicating how (s) he has performed in tests and other assessments.

Finally, you will be invited to add your own comments to these assessments and put forward your own views about how you feel your child should progress in the next stage of his/her education.

As a parent you can help your child by:  Keeping in touch with his/her register teacher. His/her teacher is in the best position to answer questions about what (s) he is learning and the progress (s)he is making.

 Attend all Open/Progress Meetings.

 Encourage your child and talk to him/her about his/her schoolwork and his/her plans for the future. Make sure that (s)he completes any work sent home with him/her from the school.

 If you become aware of any problems tell his/her register teacher about them immediately. You can also contact our Senior Learning Mentor, Mrs Dawson, by phone or at the gate.

 If family circumstances change, please inform the child’s class teacher immediately as this may help explain any changes in a child’s behaviour.

 Make sure your child gets enough sleep.

If you are unhappy about anything concerning your child’s education you should first talk over the matter with our Senior Learning Mentor Mrs Dawson. If matters cannot be resolved, you can then speak to your child’s class teacher or possibly where the situation is more serious, with the Head, Miss Craig. As both the classroom teacher and Head have classroom commitments during the school day, it is best to arrange with the school to speak to them outside teaching hours. This can be done by ringing the school Office on 01900 812330 to make a mutually agreeable appointment time. Most problems can be sorted out in this way. If you are still dissatisfied, you may make use of the formal arrangements, which have been devised for making official complaints. Information about these procedures can be obtained from the school website and are included at the back of this handbook.

Support for your child and family from school

Most primary schools are organised in such a way as to be able to deal effectively with the social and emotional needs of their pupils. We aim to provide children with safety, stability and consistency and a teaching team who are able to deal with most minor upsets or concerns, which may affect the children.

Should any additional problems arise which cannot be dealt with at class level, by letting us know about it the Head, Miss Craig, Assistant Heads, Mrs S McGlasson and Mrs H Chilton or Senior Learning Mentor, Mrs Dawson are more then willing to intervene and help solve such matters. Please note however that if the matter is an out of school matter, it is EJS policy to involve the local police through the PCSO.

As a parent you can also be a great help to the school should any emotional problem arise for your child. If you become aware that your child is unhappy or know that (s)he is undergoing emotional upset at home or at school, you should let us know immediately. This information could affect the way in which your child performs in school and can help us to decide which way we can help him/her to work through his/her problems.

If we know in advance that your child might be upset, a great deal can be done to help him/her.

Curriculum Support Throughout their school life, some of our children experience difficulty with their learning. Through various sources, we are sometimes able to obtain special funding to help the children to come to terms with their problems. The funding enables us to employ extra members of staff who are specially trained to help the children in their care overcome the difficulties they are experiencing with different aspects of their learning. Children may be withdrawn individually or in small groups when involved in specialised learning programmes or may be supported within the classroom. If parents have any queries regarding this matter, please contact the child’s class teacher or our Special Education Needs and Disabilities Leader Mrs A McAllister.

Accessibility to the School for People with Disabilities/ Disabled Provision It is the agreed policy of the Board of Governors to make sure that staff, pupils and members of the general public who have disability are able to have full access to the facilities of Ewanrigg Junior School. The policy also encourages applications from disabled members of the general public for any posts of employment that become available at the school.

The education that the school offers to its pupils and adult learners is fully inclusive. Where a pupil is found to have a particular disability every effort is made to make sure that that pupil can access the curriculum to the level that best suits him/her. Any form of support that is available to help the child is applied for and aids, special learning items or the specially trained members of the staff that are necessary are, wherever possible, put into place. Children with special educational needs are assessed annually by officers from Cumbria County Council. These officers make sure the needs of the children are being met appropriately.

Be All You Can Be! - 35 - Look, listen, learn, love and laugh!

To assist both children and adults who have mobility problems the school has been fitted with ramps and guard-rails at certain points to help them with access, specifically at the main entrance and fire exits. Doorways have been widened to allow full access round the building. Specially designed toilet facilities and a shower that allow full wheelchair access are available for all people who visit or work within the school,

Parental Involvement Parents are always welcome in Ewanrigg Junior School. We are most fortunate that quite a number of our parents, grandparents and friends come into the school to help us with various events. We are keen to develop these links as they form an important part of school life.

If you feel that you are able to help us in any way please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can put you on our Volunteer List and arrange a timetable, which is suitable to you.

Ewanrigg Junior School Association We have a very active School Association, which promotes social events within the school throughout the year. The School Association is registered as a recognised charity. All parents and friends of the children at the school are invited to be members of the Association and attend any of its meetings and social functions. As well as being a major fundraiser, the Association helps to develop very strong links between the school and the local community.

The Chair of the Ewanrigg School Association is Mrs K Dawson The Secretaries of the Ewanrigg School Association is Karen Mumberson

Charges

Legislation now states that where a visit or a school activity is a part of the time tabled curriculum, the school is not allowed to make a charge. I am sure however, that as a parent you will understand that the school has not got the resources to cover these costs.

The Board of Governors has agreed that such visits and activities should be kept to an absolute minimum and should only be organised if it is felt that they will help the children to gain greater understanding. The Board has agreed a policy that allows the school to request parents for a suitable contribution to meet the cost of travel or entrance fees when such activities are organised. If such activities are organised outside the time–tabled curriculum the school may pass on the costs of travel and accommodation to parents by asking for a donation.

Please note – should costs not be covered by contributions the event may have to be cancelled.

All money matters are dealt with by the school office. Contact Mrs Ditchburn or Mrs Moir on 01900 812330 Legal Matters a) Personal Accident Insurance Cover

Some parents wrongly assume that if a child is injured at school, the County Council is held responsible regardless of circumstances, and that its insurance will automatically apply. This is not so - the County Council’s responsibilities is strictly limited to cases where there was negligence by them – or their staff.

Accidents can happen in school, on the sports field, or during visits when the County Council or its staff are not in any way at fault and are, therefore, not responsible.

The provision of personal accident insurance is considered to be the responsibility of parents. Parents who are interested in this form of insurance can contact their local insurance broker where, for a small annual premium, a policy can be taken out to provide for substantial compensation in the event of disabling injury, regardless of how or when it was caused. b) Parents Motor vehicles In the interests of safety, parents are not to bring their motor vehicles through the school gates. We also ask that parents consider the needs of local residents when dropping off any children and do not block any driveways. c) Complaints Procedure If a parent is dissatisfied with any of the provisions of the school or feels that the school is not fulfilling its responsibilities, (s)he should contact the Head to try and resolve the matter. If the parent is still not satisfied after such consultations, he may the register a formal complaint with the Officers of the County Educational Department. A copy of the Complaints Policy can be found in the appendices section of the handbook.
