FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 6, 2013 CONTACT: Mayor’s Press Office 312.744.3334 [email protected] CHICAGO TO SHOWCASE ITS TALENT AT SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST MULTI-MEDIA CONFERENCE Mayor Sends Chicago Organizations to Promote Local Talent at Annual South by Southwest Multi- Media Conference in Austin, Texas Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Choose Chicago, the official tourism organization for Chicago, in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), World Business Chicago (WBC), and the Illinois Office of Tourism will promote Chicago’s technology, music, and film industries at South By Southwest (SXSW) for the first time March 9 – 12. The group will collaborate on Chicago Made; an initiative designed to educate SXSW attendees about Chicago natives who have made an indelible mark on their respective industries while living and working in Chicago. “From music to movies to the latest tech companies, Chicago is home to the best and brightest in the industry,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Chicago Made will bring local artists and influencers from across the city to South by Southwest to showcase our city’s creative, home-grown talent.” Chicago Made events will include an exhibit booth at the SXSW trade show, a private reception for business leaders, and an official SXSW Chicago music showcase. The effort aims to increase awareness for Chicago as a business and tourism destination and showcase the city’s technology and cultural industries. “This is not your typical trade show booth,” said Melissa Cherry, Choose Chicago Vice President of Cultural Tourism & Neighborhoods. “The entire concept is Chicago Made and we’re going to put Chicago out there in a big way, since this is our first time at SXSW.” The Chicago Made exhibit booth will offer meet-and-greet opportunities with “Chicago Makers” — a “who’s who” from Chicago’s technology, music and film industries, along with performances by a variety of Chicago’s rising and established musical acts.

  • Impulse Songlist
west coast music Impulse SPECIAL/PROTOCOL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have enough time to locate sheet music and an audio sample of the song. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. General song requests are not required, as many of our clients simply ask that the band read & react based on their guest's dance response. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs or artists they like and want played or avoided. If you wish to maintain the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested) we would ask for a minimum of 80 requests from the band’s songlist. 'LOW ROTATION' REQUESTS: General requests chosen from the 'Low Rotation' section of this songlist (pages 7-12) must be submitted at least FOUR WEEKS prior to your event. The songs from the 'Low Rotation' section are not in the current ‘IMPULSE’ song rotation, so the band would need extra preparation time. • 12.15.2020 – Taylor Swift, Reinvented Once Again
:: View email as a web page :: So much of our Covid-related discourse in 2020 centered on what was lost. But a precious few of us seized upon this very strange and sequestered year as an opportunity for acquiring some new part of ourselves. Was it a surprise that Taylor Swift was one of those people? Her summer release Folklore was instantly contextualized as a quarantine project. Swift’s second album of 2020, Evermore, was similarly presented by the singer-songwriter herself as extra run-o! from an especially fruitful songwriting period. But anyone taking a wider view of her career could see albums like Folklore and Evermore on Swift’s musical horizon, even before Covid. During the press cycle for her 2019 e!ort Lover, Swift was already expressing disdain for the pop machine, likening it to The Hunger Games. That strain was also apparent on the album, in which some very good “small” Taylor Swift songs were larded with some very bad “big” would-be hits like “Me” and “I Forgot You Existed.” More than ever, the gap between the songs in which Swift’s heart seemed to be truly invested and the songs required for radio exposure and meme-friendly virality was incredibly stark. As our current reigning stadium rocker, Swift had made Born In The U.S.A.-style mega-smashes time and again. Now, it seemed, she yearned to make her Nebraska . But would pop’s chronic overachiever ever allow herself to make an album of strictly “small” and intimate songs? When the world shut down in 2020, the obligation to fill our stadiums and arenas with world- conquering jams suddenly became moot.

Brink and Reidell, known by their DJ names ABX and STV SLV, have been releasing free mash-up songs and mixes on their website since 2007. What began as an internet project has transformed overtime to incorporate live DJ sets and a studio album of original tracks. Before taking the stage at the San Francisco venue The Independent on August 17, Reidell briefly explained the history of how The Hood Internet came to be. “ABX and I had a history of experimenting with looped-based software, just kind of making fun beats out of songs for our friends to rap on. The internet at the time seemed to be really receptive to mashups and I think we wanted to approach them with a little different twist.” In order to set themselves apart from other mash-up peers like Girl Talk (http://illegal-art.net/girltalk/), The Hood Internet decided to curate music by fusing rap and hip-hop with indie and electronic music. These songs were not necessarily chosen for their mainstream popularity, but were tracks chosen from Brink and Reidell’s own personal library of music.
