Today I’m joined by Katy Searle, head of BBC Westminster. Starting as a researcher and producer, she’s been with the BBC for almost three decades, during which time she’s worked for the World Service, Radio 4 and all three of their flagship daily news bulletins. She has reported on both domestic and international news, including the Jakarta riots and the elections in the US and Israel. As an editor, she’s been responsible for the BBC’s rolling news service, as well as leading programmes including Today and monthly current affairs programme, The Editors. She is also currently political news editor for BBC Westminster. Katy, thank you for joining me. Thank you very much for having me. Katy, it’s been quite a frantic time with Brexit, Trump and the Conservative leadership election. I’m surprised you’ve managed to find time to do this. Yes. It’s been a pretty intense time and it’s pretty tiring, but it’s an incrediBle job to do, actually. And what you find, particularly in politics and talking to people that work both within the media and politics, but also, actually, politicians, is that it’s pretty addictive. And you get used to that kind of intensity and that work rate. And the change of the media landscape over the last five years, I’ve been doing this job for about five years now, has just speeded up. -

Delusions and meddling: 30 years of Tory Euroscepticism are coming to the fore blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2017/05/09/delusions-and-meddling-30-years-of-tory-euroscepticism-are-coming-to-the- fore/ 2017-5-9 The Conservative party’s relationship with the EU has come a long way since Edward Heath urged the UK to be ‘inside Europe’. Euroscepticism has a long history in the party, but the drift of public, media and Tory sentiment away from European unity crystallised in 1988 under Margaret Thatcher. The Brexit process is now bringing these tensions to the fore, writes Oliver Daddow. We can expect more – and even more damaging – spats like the one after the May-Juncker dinner in April. Playing to domestic galleries has always been the default setting for UK politicians when it comes to European policy. In this process, a largely EU-hostile UK press market has played a significant role in both feeding political negativity about the EU and having it reflected back in political discourse. Historically, this has not gone down well with the UK’s European partners. Even notionally pro-European governments have struggled to break the mould. The content of the Brexit negotiations, combined with a febrile election atmosphere, was never going to be conducive to cool, studied diplomacy. The spat that followed the European Council’s publication of its guidelines for the EU negotiations was no exception. The document was immediately overshadowed by a furore over leaks of conversations that took place at a Downing Street dinner held three days earlier. It was attended by Theresa May and members of her Brexit team, along with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and his staff. -

Mediterranean Studies and the Remaking of Pre-Modern Europe1

Marino University of California, San Diego Abstract Why have we begun to study the Mediterranean again and what new perspectives have opened up our renewed understanding? This review article surveys recent research in a number of disciplines to ask three questions about Mediterranean Studies today: What is the object of study? What methodologies can be used to study it? And what it all means? The general problem of the object of study in Mediterranean Studies in its ecological, eco- nomic, social, political, and cultural dimensions is introduced in a summary of the works of Pergrine Horden and Nicholas Purcell, Michael McCormick, Chris Wickham, and David Abulafia. Recent methodologies suggested by Peter Burke, Christian Bromberger, Ottomanists, art historians, and literary scholars emphasize both the macro-historical and micro-historical level in order to understand both the local and the regional, material cul- ture and beliefs, mentalities, and social practices as well as its internal dynamics and exter- nal relations. The end results point to three conclusions: the relationship between structures and mechanisms of change internally and interactions externally, comparisons with “other Mediterraneans” outside the Mediterranean, and to connections with the Atlantic World in the remaking of premodern Europe then and now. This boundary, often referred to in the West as a ‘Chinese Wall’, is designed to uphold the inde- pendence of journalists from commercial interests or the whims of news proprietors. But does this separation still exist in today’s age of social media and at a time when news revenues are under unprecedented pressure? This article focuses on Twitter, now a widely used tool in the newsroom, analysing the Twitter output of 10 UK political correspondents during the busy party conference season. -

I attended as a political leader. But the next day, I went to my child's school, to the Holocaust Day Assembly: altogether different, more low key, more simple and there I was, as a parent. I listened to the teacher tell the children about the Holocaust and, of course, about Anne Frank; about her life in hiding, how she was discovered, was taken and died in a concentration camp. He read from her diary. Shortly before she was captured she wrote: "It's utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too will end, that peace and tranquillity will return once more. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals. -

Ofcom Bulletin for complaints about BBC online material Issue number: 14 Date: 21 October 2019 Introduction This Bulletin reports on complaints made to Ofcom about the BBC’s online material. It gives the outcome of Ofcom’s consideration on each complaint received and where relevant, provides Ofcom’s opinion on whether the BBC observed the relevant standards for its online material. Under the BBC’s Charter and Agreement, set by Government and Parliament, the BBC is responsible for the editorial standards of its online material. Ofcom has a responsibility to consider and give an opinion on whether the BBC has observed relevant editorial guidelines in its online material1. This came into effect with the Digital Economy Act on 27 April 2017. Online material means content on the BBC’s website and apps. This includes written text, images, video and sound content. It does not extend to social media, Bitesize, BBC material on third party websites and World Service content, among other things. Ofcom’s published arrangements and procedures for handling complaints about BBC online material can be found on the Ofcom website. These documents contain more information about the types of complaints we will consider and the process we will normally follow when handling complaints. Complaints about BBC online material must follow the ‘BBC First’ approach, where they are made to the BBC in the first instance. If a complainant is not satisfied with the BBC’s final response to a complaint about its online material, they may seek an independent opinion on it from Ofcom. Unlike our role regulating the standards of BBC broadcasting and on demand programme services (such as the BBC iPlayer), Ofcom has no enforcement powers for BBC online material. -

Understanding the key chronology of your units will be central to your ability to both analyse sources in their context and engage critically and meaningfully with essay questions. Step 1: Identify which three examination units you will be completing as part of your A Level studies on the school website. Step 2: Create a timeline on A3 paper which spans the entire time period you will be studying for each of your three units. Step 3: On your timeline, plot on the key events with full dates and titles. Step 4: For each event, can you write a brief description of what happened and the consequences of it? Step 5: In a separate colour, draw and annotate arrows explaining the connections between the events in your timeline – how are key events/changes connected? Step 6: Counterfactual analysis is a key component of A Level study.
