Hence the written history and culture of Aboriginal people in Australian has largely been seen through a similar principle as detailed in Chakrabarty’s (2007) ‘provincialising Europe,’ which is through master narratives. My dissertation addresses the question of who the Woppaburra of the Central Queensland region were culturally and historically. The pre-existing Western narrative tells a story of a submissive people studied, described and analysed with a strong colonial discursive approach. In contrast, I have used the ‘counter-narrative’ that Freeman (2004) considered to be the “culturally rooted aspects of one’s history” that are yet to be uncovered (p.298). The lens through which I viewed the counter narrative was through Indigenous research methodology considered part of Indigenous Standpoint Theory (IST). The history and culture of the Woppaburra have been exhumed through the data collected as described in Yins (2009) case study method. I have used Yin’s (2009) multiple data sources as evidence for this study. These data are Western documentation and archival records alongside the voices of Elders in interviews, direct observation at ‘on-country’ meetings and festivals, and physical artefacts which show a cultural representation of totems. A significant artefact is a length of plaited Woppaburra hair which is a biological remnant of the people under study. The Woppaburra believe it holds the memories of ancestors, story lines and healing properties. These data sources have shown that the Western text does not indicate personal stories of traditional practices, attachment to country and the centrality of totems to the Woppaburra. These data have been collectively analysed and findings presented through photographs, artwork and text. The findings from a plethora of documents demonstrate that in government archival records, public newspapers and anthropological photographs, the Woppaburra were used as items of interest, targets of punitive shooting parties, objects of slave labour and a people to be relocated at the whim of protectors. Interviews with Elders and limited anthropological papers give an alternate perspective of a people strongly connected to their natural homelands. The conclusions indicated that although the Woppaburra have been treated harshly, dispossessed of their homeland and denigrated culturally, they retained strong connections with their traditional ii | P a g e homeland. In one sense they continue caring for their homeland through partnerships with local, state and national agencies set up by the surrounding culture but in a deeper sense, today they maintain their dreamings and cycle of life through stories and cultural traditions. The connection to country across time for the Woppaburra is that, traditionally and today, they see their world through totems, ancestors and intergenerational narratives. iii | P a g e Table of     PIONEER STEAMSHIPS IN QUEENSLAND WATERS. (By A. G. Davies). (Read at a meeting of the Historical Society of Queensland, March 31, 1936). My purpose in this paper is to give you a concise history of the building up of Queensland's maritime trade—or at all events the part which the steamship played in it. I, however, want first to refer in pass­ ing to two vessels using steam power which had noth­ ing to do with mercantile activities. These were the "Sophia Jane" and the "James Watt," both of which were mentioned in my paper on "The Genesis of the Port of Brisbane." After having been engaged in the coastal trade, mostly in New South Wales, for a few years the "Sophia Jane" was broken up in 1845. In the following year a wooden paddle steamer named the "Phoenix" was built in Sydney and the engines which had been taken out of the "Sophia Jane" were put into her. This vessel was engaged in the service between Sydney and the Clarence River for five years, and was then wrecked at the entrance to that river. All that is left, therefore, of the engines of the first steamship to come to Aus- ralia lies in the shifting sands in that locality. When the s.s. "James Watt" was broken up in 1847, her engines were put into another vessel, the "Eagle," which had been built at Pyrmont, Sydney. The "Eagle's" first visit to Moreton Bay was made on August 8, 1849. She was then in charge of Cap­ tain Allen, who previously had been coming to More- ton Bay in the steamship "Tamar.

The purpose of the study was to assist in the integration of Indigenous knowledge into all future projects in the CRC. Discussions were focused around: Indigenous coastal resource issues; current Indigenous resource management initiatives; future research projects and questions; Indigenous capacity building needs and training; and processes/protocols to advance collaboration between Indigenous communities and researchers. This report attempts, as far as possible, to accurately reflect the views and concerns of those consulted. Study of the stakeholder decision-making environment undertaken prior to this consultation process highlighted several key issues limiting the contribution of Indigenous people to existing projects and initiatives, and future efforts for managing and caring for Country. The issues were: excessive overload and demand on Indigenous representatives’ time and resources by Government and other organisations; limited expertise in some areas and unrecognised expertise and knowledge in others; lack of recognition and understanding of Indigenous people’s culture, country and knowledge; insufficient institutional and legal recognition of Native Title rights and rights to access Country; and an inability or unwillingness of existing natural resource management and planning institutions to adapt structures and processes to suit the specific needs of Indigenous communities.

    82 3.3.4.4.3 Ecogeographic studies of the cranial shape The measurement of the human head of both the living and dead has long been a matter of interest to a variety of professions from artists to physicians and latterly to anthropologists (for a review see Spencer 1997c). The shape of the cranium, in particular, became an important factor in schemes of racial typology from the late 18th Century (Blumenbach 1795; Deniker 1898; Dixon 1923; Haddon 1925; Huxley 1870). Following the formulation of the cranial index by Retzius in 1843 (see also Sjovold 1997), the classification of humans by skull shape became a positive fashion. Of course such classifications were predicated on the assumption that cranial shape was an immutable racial trait. However, it had long been known that cranial shape could be altered quite substantially during growth, whether due to congenital defect or morbidity or through cultural practices such as cradling and artificial cranial deformation (for reviews see (Dingwall 1931; Lindsell 1995). Thus the use of cranial index of racial identity was suspect. Another nail in the coffin of the Cranial Index's use as a classificatory trait was presented in Coon (1955), where he suggested that head form was subject to long term climatic selection. In particular he thought that rounder, or more brachycephalic, heads were an adaptation to cold. Although it was plausible that the head, being a major source of heat loss in humans (Porter 1993), could be subject to climatic selection, the situation became somewhat clouded when Beilicki and Welon demonstrated in 1964 that the trend towards brachycepahlisation was continuous between the 12th and 20th centuries in East- Central Europe and thus could not have been due to climatic selection (Bielicki & Welon 1964).

The symposium showcased the exciting state of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creative writing and storytelling across all forms, contemporary scholarship on Indigenous writing, alongside programs such as the State Library of Queensland’s black&write! project, which supports writers’ fellowships, editing mentorships, and a trainee editor program for professional development for Indigenous editors. But really, the event was a celebration of the sort of thinking, the sort of resistance, and the re-writing of history that is evident in the epigraph to this introduction.
