Who Are Your Favorite TV Show Journalists?
For video segments from The Gilmore Girls, Ugly Betty and WKRP in Cincinnati, go to: http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/270447/who-are-your-favorite-tv-show-journalists/ Who are your favorite TV show journalists? by Kristen Hare Published Sep. 19, 2014 10:39 am Today is the anniversary of the first episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, which debuted in 1970. Poynter’s David Shedden wrote about the show and the recognition it received for today’s media history post. In February, Poynter’s Roy Peter Clark wrote about how journalists are shown in House of Cards. And on Wednesday, Lloyd Grove wrote about a new pack of TV and movie journalists for The Daily Beast. There’s a lot to choose from, so who are your favorite journalists from sitcoms or dramas? I have three. Paris Geller (from The Gilmore Girls. Rory Gilmore is also a favorite, but Paris was a super- journo.) There are a lot of great moments from Paris and Rory’s time at The Yale Daily News, but they started in high school. Betty Suarez (from Ugly Betty.) Betty starts as a secretary at a New York fashion mag, but works her way up and into the magazine’s masthead: And Les Nessman (from WKRP in Cincinnati. Love the bow tie). Who are your picks? (I’ve written about a few before, but I know there are lots more.) Email or tweet me your picks and I’ll pull together a collection. We have made it easy to comment on posts, however we require civility and encourage full names to that end (first initial, last name is OK). -

Branding the Family Drama Genre Formations and Critica[ Perspectives on Gilmore Girls AMANDA R. KEELER Before its debut on October 5, 2000, Gilmore Girls had already made television history. According to an article published in American Demo graphics that year, Gilmore Girls was the "first advertiser advocated show" funded by the Family Friendly Programming Forum (FFPF), a group consisting of major U.S. corporations, who offered up a mil lion dollars to "fund 'family-friendly' script development at the WB," the network that in 2006 partnered with UPN to become the CW ("Television" 2000). Taking into consideration other family-friendly dramatic television series aimed at multigenerational audiences on the CW, such as 7th Heaven (1996-2007) and Everwood (2002-6), one might ask how a program about a single, never-married mom (until the final season), raising her daughter, could constitute family-friendly fare. What particular elements of this Amy Sherman-Palladino cre ation led the FFPF to fund its development? And is "family friendly" a viable genre label? In the context of television programming and criti cism, does genre even matter anymore, considering the hybrid nature of most contemporary series? In this chapter I will investigare what critics have written about Gilmore Girls and how the show has been linked to similar programs in terms of genre classification. -

Asian American Independent Media On the Rise 41 Conclusion 52 2 Introduction In today’s mainstream media, there exists a visible lack of Asian American representation. When they are given roles in film and television, those roles often maintain the stereotypical ideology which has been dominant for decades. Asian American stereotypes in these media range from hard-working and servile to masters of the martial arts and often put forth a misguided or exaggerated impression of what Asian Americans are like as a group. I argue that these stereotypical representations of Asian Americans manifest themselves in viewers’ minds and affect the way they view the minority group far after the they power off their television sets. -
Gilmore Girls” E “3 Teresas”1
Abstract In the context of television studies, the paper presents a parallel between two series about the women daily life crossed by the generational issue: Gilmore Girls (EUA; Warner Bros., 2000-2007; Netflix, 2016) and 3 Teresas (Brazil; GNT/BossaNovaFilms; 2013-2014). Through a qualitative approach focused on discursive construction, we identified three main contact points between the two productions: (I) the everyday life of ordinary people as a guide; (II) the blurring of boundaries between family roles; and (III) feminism. Despite the distance between production conditions and socio-cultural contexts, we find that audiovisual themes emerge from the social dynamics marked by greater intergenerational coexistence. Keywords: TV series. Generations. Gender. 1 Versão preliminar desse trabalho foi apresentado no GP Estudos de Televisão e Televisualidades no 40º Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências da Comunicação da Intercom - Curitiba (PR), setembro de 2017. -

This thesis examines the social, cultural and political history of the Queen Bee figure in the popular culture of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The Queen Bee is a fluid anti-heroine however, a feminist character who while she tears down others around her to succeed is also genuine with relatable emotions. -
A STUDY in GILMORE by PEYTON @BEACHDEATH
A STUDY IN GILMORE by PEYTON @BEACHDEATH *** THIS IS AN UNLICENSED, UNAUTHORIZED, AND NON-COMMERCIAL FANWORK. BRIEF LIST OF PEOPLE WHO SHOULDN’T SUE ME: AMY SHERMAN-PALLADINO, MARK GATISS, THE OTHER SHERLOCK GUY WHOSE NAME I FORGET, OH! MOFFAT, STEVEN (STEPHEN?) MOFFAT, SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE. *** 1. INT. - BEDROOM - NIGHT RORY GILMORE is having a nightmare. She is in a grey building with low ceilings, and the building is under attack. A colleague cries out her name as an explosion sounds in the distance, and the low ceiling caves in, shrouding her in fog. She jolts awake and sits up in bed, distressed and panic-stricken, until she realizes that she is safe, and a long way from war. She falls back onto her pillow. She tries to calm her breathing. Her memories refuse to leave her alone. She begins to weep. 2. INT. - BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING RORY sits up and switches on her bedside lamp. It’s still dark outside. She sits quietly, wrapped up in her thoughts, and casts her eyes around at the remains of her childhood bedroom - the Radiohead posters on the walls, the bookshelf brimming with Sylvia Plath and Dorothy Parker. She looks at her desk. A metal cane is leaning against it. She looks at it, unhappy. She will not be sleeping again tonight. 3. INT. - BEDROOM - MORNING The sun has finally risen. Rory - wet hair, freshly washed - is wearing a terry bathrobe. She walks across the room, leaning heavily on her cane. In her other hand, she’s carrying a mug of tea. -
New Cutruzzula Four Gilmore Girls 53117
FOUR GILMORES AND A FUNERAL Written by Kara Cutruzzula Based on the TV series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino [email protected] TEASER EXT. GILMORE HOME - NIGHT LORELAI GILMORE (46) - confident, attractive, sharp as a sword - stands at the doorstep of a massive, imposing house, complete with wrought iron gate. She stares at the entrance. LORELAI May God and his human representative on Earth, Dolly Parton, get me through this. Lorelai rings the bell. A MAID answers wearing a very traditional outfit. Think “sexy maid.” Minus the sexy part. LORELAI (CONT'D) I see she’s still got you in the black-and-white get-up. Classic. Very Margaret Mitchell. Lorelai walks inside. INT. GILMORE HOME - CONTINUOUS Lorelai’s mother, EMILY GILMORE (70) - immaculate, poised - enters. She’s not the type of woman who gives a warm welcome. EMILY You’re late. LORELAI Traffic was terrible. Someone should really check on the whereabouts of Chris Christie. EMILY Nevermind. Dinner’s already plated. LORELAI Ooh, we get to use plates this time? Goody. INT. GILMORE DINING ROOM - NIGHT Lorelai and Emily enter to find a beautiful table set for three under a chandelier. They sit a beat in awkward silence. EMILY How long will Rory be? K. Cutruzzula 2. LORELAI She should turn up soon. Speaking of vegetables, Sookie’s dreamed up this incredible buttered turnip puree. If you can get past the color, it’s really quite good. EMILY What on earth are you talking about? LORELAI Side dishes. (after a beat) How’s Dad today? EMILY Today? Today’s the same as yesterday, which was the same as the day before. -
