The Episcopal Church of the Nativity The Window Volume 23, Issue 10 October 2016

From the Curate Recently a small group gathered in the Chancel pews here at Nativity and prayed a litany for peace and social justice. Our prayers included this petition, “We pray for peace in our commu- nities this day and commit to you all who work to uphold law and justice. We pray for an end to fear. Bless our streets and cities that people may go about their lives in safety and well-being.” The next morning, I pulled up a news site on my computer that had a picture of a protester and a national guardsman hugging with a caption that read “Third night of protests in Charlotte mostly peaceful.” As I read this headline, I thought of our small group praying and then gathering around the altar to celebrate Holy Eucharist. I thought about the witness of presence this group brought to the testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ. I can still hear their voices saying, “Hear our prayer.” We had eight people in our small group that night, but I know that we were joining with others who were praying to God for peace. More important still, I know that the Holy Spirit was moving on our behalf because that is what is promised to us in Scripture. Our group stumbled through the sung parts of the Eucharist, especially The Lord’s Prayer as people gave up trying to read the music and tried to blend their voices. Our singing was halting and clumsy and we focused on each word with inten- tion. The beauty of that moment will stay with me for a long time. I know that God saw humility and heard the sincere petitions of his people in those moments. We were acknowledging God’s sovereignty and our need of His love and guidance. As Christians, we are to have faith that peace is possible. We are to uphold the law of love that Jesus wit- nessed to in word and deed. Jesus taught us that life can come from death and hope can overwhelm despair. We have seen this triumph of life over death in our Lord Jesus both in his resurrection and in the testimony of his ministry to those in need of transformation from a life of darkness to one of hope and light and prom- ise. Sometimes our efforts are clumsy, and we must continually seek God’s guidance in where to give our time and resources. There will be moments when we don’t get it right, but we must continually try. I am so thankful for the witness and work of our church. I am continually blessed in sharing the journey of growth in grace that I see so many of our members experiencing — including myself. Many are coming to better understand their vocations and gifts, and it is wonderful watching people grow in confidence as they gain mastery in new ministries that they were initially anxious about joining. Thanks be to God for the good work of Nativity and the privilege we have of joining with others in prayer for our country and in working in our community to spread the Good News and share God’s love. As the Apostle Paul would say, “I thank God for you every day!”

Yours in Christ, Mother Linda Suzanne + October 2 October 9 October 16

Rally Sunday Rally Sunday in September is traditionally the kick off for the Church year. Summer is officially over even if the warm weather is not, kids are back in school, and beach and lake trips that were common throughout the summer are fewer in num- ber. Rally Sunday at Nativity was September 11 this year. The day started with a combined service – bringing to- gether the 7:30 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. folks in worship, praise and prayer. Following the service, we adjourned to the Parish Hall for lunch and the annual Ministry Fair. Rally Sunday 2016 was so successful we had to set up extra tables in the Parish Hall so that everyone attending could sit and eat their lunch. The Ministry Fair was a success as well – with 18 people signing up for 12 ministries! Advent Quiet Day with The Reverend John Coleman December 3, 2016, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Daughters of the King are sponsoring an Advent Quiet Day for ALL who would like a little “time-out” from commercial Christmas craziness. This is not a silent retreat, but rather a series of medi- tations interspersed with moments of quietness. We will break for lunch and will close with Holy Eucharist. If you are interested, please call the church office to make a reservation so that we can get a lunch count. There will be no charge for lunch. Please mark your calendars, pass the word, and bring a friend. This quiet day will be dedicated in loving memory of our dear friend, Gloria Joy Stabler. Outreach Sunday, October 9, Nativity Outreach and the EYC will again be serving dinner and leading a short worship service at the Dothan Rescue Mission. We meet at the Parish Hall around 4 p.m., then carpool/caravan to the Mission; serve dinner; and lead a short worship service. We are usually done around 7 p.m. We will be serving spare ribs, so we are looking for sides, beverages and dessert. For more information, email Stuart at [email protected].
