DALE PARNELL President DP/gb "SPACE AGE EDUCATION FROM MOTHER LODE TRADITION" BIOGRAPHY FOR JANET LEIGH, ACTRESS As a student at the old Stockton College campus, Janet Leigh had already started on her road to success, beginning a career in music and acting but also her lifelong devotion to helping those less fortunate. Long recognized for her talents in acting, she has won numerous awards including Best Comedienne of the Year, the Golden Globe for best performance in "Psycho," an Academy Award nomination also for "Psycho" and the Most Popular Star, among others. Active in several chaitable organizations including the Cedars-Sinai Women's Guild for free holspital patients and clinical service, she has remained a vital force in Care, Seeing Eyes for the Blind, the Deaf Ski Team, the Los Angeles Recreation Commission, the Kidney Foundation, the National Committee of the Peace Corps and the Crippled Children's Society of Southern California, including holding executive offices in each of these organizations. Her participation in one of Hollywood's most effective and successful charities for the mentally retarded, Share, Inc., won her the organization's prestigious "Member of the Year" award in 1975, the City of Hope award for charitable activities and the St. Caritas award for working in mental retardation. In addition, she is still supportive of her hometown, appearing quite frequently for charitable events. Her new book, an autobiography title "There Really Was a Hollywood," is currently on sale throughout the nation. Her life has been varied and busy: she was asked to serve as President Johnson's Ambassador to Finland, she traveled at the request of the state department touring South America where she spent her time with the ill, less fortunate children of Brazil and Argentina; and was honored by the Stockton Arts Commission last year for her lifetime achievement. In between it all, Janet Leigh has been one of Hollywood's most versitile actresses and the mother of two daughters. -SJDC- KRAMER .8z REISS / 'PUBLIC RELNFION,_ JANET LEIGH BIOGRAPHY' The dictionary contains two adjectives, both of which describe, Janet Leigh perfectly: Incessant ... "ceaseless or uninterrupted activity" ... Perpetual ... "blooming continuously" ... This extraordinary woman, whose success story smacks of some- one's imagination, is, indeed, the true Cinderella. She was plucked from obscurity by one of the Legends in the world of motion pictures, Norma Shearer. It was Miss Shearer who, while vacationing at The Sugar Bowl Ski Lodge, a resort in Northern California, saw a photograph of the-then Jeanette Helen Morrison; the young girl's beauty immediately attracted her attention; Miss Shearer contacted her studio--the biggest and most prestigious of them all--MGM. Reacting to their star's enthusiasm, MGM sent for 'Miss Morrison'; she was immediately tested, signed to a contract, had her named changed to 'Janet Leigh' and, in a matter of weeks, was making her motion picture debut starring opposite Van Johnson in "The Romance Of Rosy Ridge". ("It was all so fast; that was the way things were done in those days; even today I sometimes (more...) _ 9100 SUNSET BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90069; (213) 273-3242 JANET LEIGH -2- BIOGRAPHY find myself wondering, 'how did it all happen?'.) Happen it did, however, and the film critics very soon added . their own huzzahs. Janet portrayed what she, in reality, was in this lyrical love story--beautiful, .fresh-faced and unsophisticated. ("To this day, that film remains one of my favorites. As for Van, well, we're still very close friends. If it hadn't been for his help and understanding, I'm not sure everything would have turned out so well.") Born in Merced, California, Janet, the only child of the ski 0 lodge's receptionist, was soon living in Stockton, çalifornj where g4304.4a„e4f,r she attended the city's grammar and highAa schools. Another fan, Alfred Hitchcock asked for her to essay the pivotal role of 'Marion' in his incredibly-successful boxoffice bonanza, '"Psycho". Critical response once again played an important role in Janet's career. "Psycho" brought her an 'Oscar' nomination as "Best Supporting Actress" by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She considers this film one of, if not the most demanding of all her films. ("That shower sequence took weeks to shoot and Mr. Hitchcock closed the set all during its filming.
