Now in its 9th year, KC SuperStar is an “American Idol” style competition that awards the $10,000 Edward and Ellen Rose Family Scholarship to the most talented high school singer in Kansas City. Additional scholarship and prize money provided by Arnold & Carol Caviar, and Howard & Ro Jacobson. Total scholarship and prize money totals over $22,000. After auditions and semifinals, the finalists compete in front of a sold out crowd at Johnson County Community College’s Yardley Hall on August 26 for the grand prize. HOW IT WORKS: More than 200 students from the Kansas City metro area audition. Up to 24 singers make it to the Semifinals where judges then select 10 talented singers to compete in the Finals. At the Finals, the audience enjoys a high energy show and selects the winner. KC SUPERSTAR BENEFICIARIES: The primary beneficiary of KC SuperStar is the Jewish Community Center (The J). The J is a respected leader in the areas of child development and youth services, cultural arts, senior adult programming, as well as fitness and sports activities. Open to all faiths and backgrounds The J’s mission is to infuse the lives of all people with wellness, meaning and joy. Proceeds from KC SuperStar support scholarships and programming throughout The J, making meals, transportation, child care and education, camp, wellness programs and the arts, possible to so many deserving children, families, individuals and senior adults. KC SuperStar will continue to support The Reat Griffin Underwood Rising Stars Fund named in memory of Reat who, along with his grandfather, lost his life during the April 13, 2014 tragedy at The Jewish Community Campus. This fund directly supports education and training programs that help youth 14-21 years old achieve their goals in the Performing Arts. 2018 Celebrity Host megan hilty Broadway, television and film star Megan Hilty will host and perform at this year’s KC SuperStar. Megan starred on Broadway as Glinda in Wicked opposite Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, and starred in the Los Angeles production from 2007-2009. She also starred as “Doralee” in 9 to 5: The Musical for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League Award, and an Ovation Award all for Best Actress in a Musical. Most recently she received 2016 Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award nominations for Outstanding Featured Actress for the role of “Brooke Ashton” in Noises Off. On television Megan is best known for starring as “Ivy Lynn” in the critically acclaimed show Smash, and most recently opposite Sean Hayes in Sean Saves the World. Additional television credits include The Good Wife, Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, Difficult People and Desperate Housewives. Megan has released 3 albums, co-starred in the feature film Rules Don’t Apply from director Warren Beatty, and maintains an active concert schedule, both with symphony orchestras and in solo concerts at smaller venues.
