Patron saints and national holidays.

National Days are not celebrated in Britain in the same way as they are in a number of other countries. Only St Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland and St Andrew's Day in Scotland are taken as an official holiday. All the other national days are normal working days.

23 April - The national day of England is St George's Day. St George is England's patron saint.

30 November - The national day of Scotland’s is St Andrew's Day St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland.

1 March - The national day of Wales is St David's Day. St David is Wales's patron saint.

The national flower of England is the rose. The flower has been adopted as England’s emblem since the time of the Wars of the Roses - civil wars (1455-1485) between the royal house of Lancaster (whose emblem was a red rose) and the royal house of York (whose emblem was a white rose).

The national flower of Scotland is the , a prickly-leaved purple flower which was first used in the 15th century as a symbol of defence. The Scottish Bluebell is also seen as the flower of Scotland.

The national flower of Wales is the daffodil, which is traditionally worn on St. David’s Day. The vegetable called leek is also considered to be a traditional emblem of Wales.

The national flower of Northern Ireland is the shamrock, a three-leaved plant similar to . An Irish tale tells of how Patrick used the three- leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. The Royal Family. The United Kingdom has a royal family. Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for fifty three years. Her husband is called Prince Phillip and the have four children, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne. The queen has eight grandchildren ( including Prince William and Harry) and five great grandchildren.
