Sierra Leone Rockfowl and Upper Guinea Specials 21st February to 7th March 2022 (15 days) White-necked Rockfowl by Adam Riley RBL Sierra Leone Itinerary 2 Sierra Leone is a core West African destination, offering visitors a diverse range of exciting Upper Guinea forest birds and mammals. Rockjumper pioneered this tour during reconnaissance trips in 2005 and then led three successful tours in the course of 2006; these being the first-ever birding tours to the country. Sierra Leone’s biologically rich rainforests support no less than 15 of the 16 Upper Guinea endemic bird species, including the fabled White-necked Rockfowl that will form the basis of our tour. Forest specialties abound and we will focus on finding the rare Gola Malimbe, Sierra Leone Prinia, Black-headed Rufous Warbler, Hartlaub’s Duck, Brown-cheeked Hornbill, Sharpe’s Apalis, Kemp’s Longbill, White-breasted Guineafowl and Red-cheeked Wattle-eye; while the wooded savannas are home to the stunning Emerald Starling, Crimson Seedcracker and Turati’s Boubou, to name but a few. ABSTRACT Most studies examining dominance hierarchies have focused at the intraspecific level. While some examples of interspecific hierarchies have been noted, these have usually been limited to a few species in the same taxonomic group that utilize resources in similar ways. Here, we examine evidence for dominance interference competition among vertebrates comprising a diverse frugivore community, including 19 species of birds, squirrels, and primates in a mature Central African rainforest. A total of 38 fruiting trees from 18 species were observed for 2058 h to record dominance interactions between foraging vertebrates. We show that interference competition occurs within and between taxonomically diverse species of vertebrates at fruiting trees. The resulting cross-taxonomic dominance hierarchy includes larger vertebrates, such as primates and hornbills, as well as smaller ones, such as squirrels and parrots. Within this hierarchy, the dominance rank of each species is highly correlated with body mass, and is shown to significantly affect the number of fruits removed from a given tree. Because a majority of tropical tree species depend on vertebrates to disperse their seeds, and particular vertebrates may preferentially disperse the seeds of specific tree species, results may have important conservation implications for the maintenance of tree diversity in regions where populations of larger frugivores have been depressed or extirpated. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. Each species represents a distinct phylogenetic lineage based on genetic analysis. In addition to genetic differentiation, each new species is diagnosable from other Stiphrornis lineages by morphology, and by plumage. One of the new species appears to be restricted to the Central and Brong-Ahafo Regions of Ghana, and another is restricted to Benin and the Central Region of Ghana. In Ghana, these two new species presumably come into contact with Stiphrornis erythrothorax (Western Region of Ghana and westward), and there is evidence that one of the new species has a distinguishably different song from erythrothorax. The distribution of the third new species is primarily on the south bank of the Congo River, near the city of Kisangani. Recognition of these species provides additional evidence that Afrotropical forests are harbouring substantial cryptic diversity, and that our knowledge of the drivers of this diversity remains poorly documented across the region. -

UGANDA: COMPREHENSIVE CUSTOM TRIP REPORT 1 – 17 JULY 2018 By Dylan Vasapolli The iconic Shoebill was one of our major targets and didn’t disappoint! www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | TRIP REPORT Uganda: custom tour July 2018 Overview This private, comprehensive tour of Uganda focused on the main sites of the central and western reaches of the country, with the exception of the Semliki Valley and Mgahinga National Park. Taking place during arguably the best time to visit the country, July, this two-and-a-half-week tour focused on both the birds and mammals of the region. We were treated to a spectacular trip generally, with good weather throughout, allowing us to maximize our exploration of all the various sites visited. Beginning in Entebbe, the iconic Shoebill fell early on, along with the difficult Weyns’s Weaver and the sought-after Papyrus Gonolek. Transferring up to Masindi, we called in at the famous Royal Mile, Budongo Forest, where we had some spectacular birding – White-spotted Flufftail, Cassin’s and Sabine’s Spinetails, Chocolate-backed and African Dwarf Kingfishers, White-thighed Hornbill, Ituri Batis, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Scaly-breasted Illadopsis, Fire-crested Alethe, and Forest Robin, while surrounding areas produced the sought-after White-crested Turaco, Marsh Widowbird, and Brown Twinspot. Murchison Falls followed and didn’t disappoint, with the highlights being too many to list all – Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Black-headed Lapwing, and Northern Carmine Bee-eater all featuring, along with many mammals including a pride of Lions and the scarce Patas Monkey, among others. The forested haven of Kibale was next up and saw us enjoying some quality time with our main quarry, Chimpanzees. -

Beautiful Sunbird RBT Ghana Trip Report February 2007 2 Tour Summary This classic tour combining the best rainforest sites, national parks and seldom explored northern regions gave us an incredible overview of the excellent birding that Ghana has to offer. This trip was highly successful, we located nearly 400 species of birds including many of the Upper Guinea endemics and West Africa specialties, and together with a great group of people, we enjoyed a brilliant African birding adventure. After spending a night in Accra our first morning birding was taken at the nearby Shai Hills, a conservancy that is used mainly for scientific studies into all aspects of wildlife. These woodland and grassland habitats were productive and we easily got to grips with a number of widespread species as well as a few specials that included the noisy Stone Partridge, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Senegal Parrot, Guinea Turaco, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Vieillot’s and Double- toothed Barbet, Gray Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Greenbul, Melodious Warbler, Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, Blackcap Babbler, Yellow-billed Shrike, Common Gonolek, White Helmetshrike and Piapiac. Towards midday we made our way to the Volta River where our main target, the White-throated Blue Swallow showed well. -

ABSTRACT The impact of environmental changes due to deforestation that gives rise to the spread of infectious diseases remain insufficiently studied, particularly in parasitic co-infection scenarios. The mark-recapture of birds is of particular interest since we can study human-impacted environments and conduct longitudinal studies of infections. Birds in the South West region of Cameroon were sampled prior to deforestation in 2016 and again in 2017 following deforestation in an area slated for palm oil agriculture. The impact of deforestation on parasitaemia, co-infections trends (of four avian haematozoans and the Superfamily Filarioidea) and the relationships between the prevalence of co-infection of parasites and microclimatic factors (temperature and relative humidity) in all recaptured birds were analyzed using both microscopy and PCR techniques. -

Birds were generally in good voice, and fair numbers of birds were seen at most of our hotspots. Cuckoos were a little less vocal, but widowbirds, bishops, and weavers were in full breeding plumage and displaying all over the place. -
