ADVERTISEMENTS coll=orl-sports-headlines College baseball changes looming Coaches fear new rules aimed at helping academic performance will end up hurting the game. Dave Curtis Sentinel Staff Writer May 22, 2007 South Carolina baseball Coach Ray Tanner fumes every time he hears about the changes. The NCAA, in an effort to boost the academic performance of players throughout college baseball, has approved changes Tanner thinks may harm the game he loves. "There are going to be issues with this," Tanner said on a Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference earlier this month. "And the caliber of play in college baseball is probably going to go down." "This" is a four-pronged overhaul of Division I college baseball rules approved in April by the NCAA Board of Directors and set to take effect for the 2008-09 academic year. Starting then, teams will face new standards for doling out their scholarships and new limits to the numbers on their rosters. Players must be academically eligible in late summer rather than mid-winter. And any player who transfers to another Division I school must sit out a year, a rule previously enforced only in football, basketball and men's ice hockey. The changes, recommended by a study group of coaches and administrators, are designed to increase the academic performance of D-I players. But they will affect almost every corner of the game, from summer leagues to high-school recruits to teams' budgets.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

He definitely deserves this national honor.” The Beavers advanced to the CWS under Casey with an Oregon State single-season record 54 wins (54-4 overall), and set a Pac-12 Conference record for wins, while finishing league play with a 27-3 mark. Casey’s Beavers own the two longest winning streaks in college baseball in 2017 with a 23-game streak and an active 21-game streak. On May 12, Casey became just the 16th active coach to reach 1,000 wins with a four-year program. After opening the season ranked seventh in the NCBWA preseason poll, Casey led the Beavers to 28 wins in their first 29 games including the 23-game win streak. Federer faces Florian Mayer in the Mercedes Cup quarter-finals, and with a win would trail only Jimmy Connors among the winningest players since the spring of 1968. Federer has a 6-0 FedEx ATP Head 2 Head record against Mayer, including straight-set wins on German grass at the Gerry Weber Open in 2005, 2012 and 2015. Federer is not the only man with a milestone on the line in Stuttgart. Mike Bryan seeks his 1,000th doubles win when he and twin brother Bob face Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin in a semi-final match on Court 1. Only Federer, Lendl, Connors and Daniel Nestor have earned at least 1,000 victories in singles or doubles. Bob Bryan has 985 doubles wins individually. As a team, the Bryans are 984-300. Also in action are a pair of players who won their first ATP World Tour title in Stuttgart: 2002 champion Mikhail Youzhny and 2008 champion Juan Martin del Potro.
