STANDING COMMITTEE CHAIRPEOPLE Administration & Legal: Lynn O’Mealia The History of Mantoloking Finance: Anthony (Tony) Amarante According to Becker’s Indian Place Names in New Jersey, the name Mantoloking translates to “frog ground” with a Land Use: Douglas Nelson secondary meaning of “sand place.” Mantoloking was part of Brick Township until April 10, 1911 when the Borough of Mantoloking was incorporated. Shortly after in 1912, electricity came to town. Public Safety: Evan (Steve) Gillingham An inlet, called Herring Inlet flowed just south of Channel Lane up until 1740 when it became unnavigable due to a Public Works: Anthony (Tony) Amarante storm and was completely closed by the first decade of the 1800s. The North and South Lagoons were dug in this area Recreation: Brad Batcha in 1928. In 1881, the Philadelphia and Long Branch Railroad Company, a division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, completed a line from Seaside Park through Mantoloking up the coast to connect with the southern terminus of the New York and Long Branch Railroad. The Mantoloking train station, located on Downer Avenue across from the current UTILITIES firehouse, was built in 1883. As of 1911, the weekday schedule included eight southbound and nine northbound JCP&L AT&T DirecTV trains. After 65 years of Mantoloking train service, the last northbound train left the station in September 1949. 1-800-662-3115 1-844-886-4258 The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders adopted a resolution in 1883 for Captain John Arnold to build a Mon-Fri 8am-6pm 1060 Cedar Bridge Avenue bridge across Barnegat Bay for $4,000. This swing draw bridge was completed to Old Bridge Street in 1884. The Brick, NJ 08723 second bridge across Barnegat Bay was completed in 1938 for $242,564 and landed at the foot of Herbert Street. NJ Natural Gas Co. The third bridge was completed in 2006 for $22M, also landing at the foot of Herbert Street, slightly to the north of the 1938 bridge. One hundred 1-800-221-0051 DISH fifty-two feet of this bridge still remain as a fishing pier on the Brick side. Mon-Fri 6am-10pm 732-274-2871 The Mantoloking Golf Club was formed in 1897. Using a red ball so that it was visible in the sand, the course ran from the sand dunes between Sat-Sun 6am-6pm 2033 Route 130 Herbert Street and Downer Avenue across the railroad tracks to Barnegat Bay. Later the name was changed to the Mantoloking Golf and Yacht Club Monmouth Junct., NJ 08852 and then to the Mantoloking Yacht Club in 1907. New Jersey American Water The Albertson Hotel, built on the ocean front just north of Albertson Street, was later called the Breakers Hotel. The boardwalk extended from this 1-800-272-1325 Xfinity Store by COMCAST hotel northward to Downer Avenue after which it became a brick walk up until Herbert Street. High seas in Mon-Fri 7am-7pm 1-800-266-2278 1896 and then again in 1902, destroyed the boardwalk. After the 1902 storm, it was rebuilt over a bulkhead Emergencies 24/7 1256 Hooper Avenue until another storm in 1914 demolished it for good. Toms River, NJ 08753 The original Borough Hall was built in 1928, but was torn down in 2013 after significant damage due Verizon to Superstorm Sandy. The new Borough Hall was completed and occupied in 2019. The Mantoloking Fire 732-262-2960 Company was founded in 1930 and continues as an active volunteer organization. 481 Rt 70, Brick, NJ 08723 References: Becker, Donald Wm.
