Page 1 Robert Heide Meeting Jackie I first met Jackie Curtis through theater director Ron Link, during rehearsals of Jackie’s outrageous nostalgic/camp Hollywood comedy-play Glamour Glory, and Gold at Bastiano’s Cellar Studio in the Village. In the cast were platinum Melba LaRose Jr. playing a Jean Harlow-type screen siren, Robert De Niro in his very first acting role playing all the male parts, and Candy Darling, still a brunette before being transformed by Link—with the help of Max Factor theatrical make-up, false eyelashes, blue eye shadow, and for her hair, 20 volume peroxide mixed with white henna ammonia—into the super-blonde Goddess she is thought of today. Jackie also became a Warhol Superstar, along with her glamorous sisters Candy and Holly Woodlawn. At the time of my first introduction, Jackie was a pretty boy wearing wire-rimmed eyeglasses with natural rosy cheeks and brown hair. Initially shy and introverted, he was given a quick makeover by Svengali Link and changed, with the help of red henna, into a flaming redhead with glossy scarlet lips à la Barbara Stanwyck, Jackie’s favorite film star. Gobs of facial glitter would later add to the mix. During the run of Glamour, Glory, and Gold, Sally Kirkland, who lived upstairs from me on Christopher Street, brought along her friend Shelley Winters to Bastiano’s to see Jackie’s show. Shelley was about to open in her own play, One Night Stands of a Noisy Passenger, at the Actors’ Playhouse on Sheridan Square, and became enamored with the young, sexy, muscular De Niro, deciding to cast him in her show, where he ran around stage in his bathing trunks.

By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry.

As a tribute to her BFI Southbank presents a season of some of her finest films, this August, including Giant (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). Throughout her career she won two Academy Awards and was nominated for a further three, and, beauty aside, was known for her humanitarian work and fearless social activism. Elizabeth Taylor was born in Hampstead, London, on 27 February 1932 to affluent American parents, and moved to the US just months before the outbreak of WWII. Retired stage actress Sara Southern doggedly promoted her daughter’s career as a child star, culminating in the hit National Velvet (1944), when she was just 12, and was instrumental in the reluctant teenager’s successful transition to adult roles. Her first big success in an adult role came with Vincente Minnelli’s Father of the Bride (1950), before her burgeoning sexuality was recognised and she was cast as a wealthy young seductress in A Place in the Sun (1951) – her first on-screen partnership with Montgomery Clift (a friend to whom Taylor remained fiercely loyal until Clift’s death in 1966). Together they were hailed as the most beautiful movie couple in Hollywood history. The oil-epic Giant (1956) came next, followed by Raintree County (1958), which earned the actress her first Oscar nomination and saw Taylor reunited with Clift, though it was during the filming that he was in the infamous car crash that would leave him physically and mentally scarred.
