Page 2 Page 43 Please note: All services will be held online until further notice David or Stephen will send an email giving details and the link to the service each week Dear Friends I went for a ride on a motorbike the other day, up and down the valley and although I had ridden motorbikes in the past I did feel a little apprehensive about getting on a machine after 25 years! But it was fine. Muscle memory came back as I began to learn the feel of the new machine. Some people describe that that is what it is like to pick up an instrument they haven’t played for years, that somewhere in the back of the back of the amazing brain are the skills, the ‘know-how’ to play and make music again. Memories are tucked away for all sorts of reasons in our minds, associated with activities or events often with poignancy. There are some memories created at moments of spiritual awareness, when we have thought carefully about faith and perhaps made a serious step of interest and exploration, may- be ending with a Confirmation that was now long ago. There are often things that bring back the ‘muscle memory’ of those times. In Lent we re- member Jesus being led to go into the desert to pray and fast for forty days and nights. He knew that God’s spirit was strongly leading him into that ex- perience and he was obedient to it. Often, we have sensing that moments in life are important and we want to recognise them spiritually. The arrival of a baby is one such moment, the wonder and joy at seeing this new life is one of great joy and profound for parents and often we meet in church for a baptism or thanksgiving service. That service is a beginning of a journey that parents promise to undertake with their children and with God in learning more about the Christian faith through ‘private prayer and public worship’. Sadly, though that journey ends at its beginning, so often. Similarly, with services of Confirmation where there is declaration of faith and trust in Jesus Christ, some go on in Christian discipleship and others have simply marked a milestone, a rite of passage, perhaps in their school’s program. Page 42 Page 3 God has a memory! He remembers our first breath and cry, every moment of joy and laughter, every sadness and grief. In the bible we see that God is ac- quainted with all our ways and that we might pray to him in every circum- stance. The amazing thing about Christian faith is knowing the presence of God and that once we have had that knowledge, we may take this further. Jesus promised, ““Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” That is an amazing promise that God will be so close we can chat over a meal! But that is wonderfully how it is for those who respond to God’s call in Christ. How do you feel about the question, “What is God’s spirit leading you into, reawakening in you, making you wistful for? Is it to start exploration again of faith, of asking searching questions about the Christian faith, is it to find again the first glimmerings of faith and trust in God? In a few weeks we celebrate Easter, thinking especially about the events in Jesus’ life of his deep prayers, trials, mocking’s, crucifixion and death. Ex- cept it does not all end there! Jesus was wonderfully brought back to life and having conquered death lives and the benefit of his death and resurrection is for all. Why not get in touch and we can explore this together, over a bonfire in the church yard, the garden gate, walking the dogs, or some other way, you choose! Blessings David Benefice Administrator We appointed an Administrator for the Benefice who began work in January, Sadly, for personal reasons April has left that post but we are pleased to have appointed a new administrator , Tricia Grey. Conservation Area Appraisal Conservation Area Appraisal Sherfield on Loddon …makingSherfield a difference on Loddon Conservation Area Appraisal Introduction The Sherfield on Loddon Conservation Area was first designated in 1981 by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in recognition of the special architectural and historic interest of the village. Having designated the Conservation Area, the Local Authority has a statutory duty to ensure that those elements that form its particular character or appearance should be preserved or enhanced, especially when considering planning applications. It is therefore necessary to define and analyse those qualities or elements Sherrens Mead, Greenway that contribute to, or detract from, the special interest of the area and to assess how they combine to justify its designation as a Conservation Area. Such factors can include: • its historic development; • the contribution of individual or groups of buildings to the streetscene and the spaces that surround them; and • the relationship of the built environment with the landscape. They can also include the less tangible senses and experiences such as noise or smells, which can play a key part in forming the distinctive character of an area. The Appraisal takes the form of written text and an Appraisal plan. In both respects every effort has been made to include or analyse those elements key to the special character of the area. Where buildings, structures or features have not been specifically highlighted it does not necessarily follow that they are of no visual or historic value to the Conservation Area. The document is intended to be an overall framework and guide within which decisions can be made on a site-specific basis.

  • The Distribution of the Romano-British Population in The
PAPERS AND PROCEEDINGS 119 THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE ROMANO - BRITISH POPULATION IN THE BASINGSTOKE AREA. By SHIMON APPLEBAUM, BXITT., D.PHIL. HE district round Basingstoke offers itself as the subject for a study of Romano-British . population development and. Tdistribution because Basingstoke Museum contains a singu larly complete collection of finds made in this area over a long period of years, and preserved by Mr. G. W. Willis. A number of the finds made are recorded by him and J. R. Ellaway in the Proceedings of the Hampshire Field Club (Vol. XV, 245 ff.). The known sites in the district were considerably multiplied by the field-work of S. E. Winbolt, who recorded them in the Proceedings of the same Society.1 I must express my indebtedness to Mr. G. W. Willis, F.S.A., Hon. Curator of Basingstoke Museum, for his courtesy and assist ance in affording access to the collection for the purposes of this study, which is part of a broader work on the Romano-British rural system.2 The area from which the bulk of the collection comes is limited on the north by the edge of the London Clay between Kingsclere and Odiham ; its east boundary is approximately that, of the east limit of the Eastern Hampshire High Chalk Region' southward to Alton. The south boundary crosses that region through Wilvelrod, Brown Candover and Micheldever, with outlying sites to the south at Micheldever Wood and Lanham Down (between Bighton and Wield). The western limit, equally arbitrary, falls along the line from Micheldever through Overton to Kingsclere.

"Following the excitement of seeing our first Purple Emperor inside our office yesterday, exactly the same thing happened again today at around 9.45am. The office door was open and we spotted a butterfly on the inside of the window, on closer inspection we realised it was a Purple Emperor. It was much smaller than the one we had seen the day before and more battered. However we were able to take pictures of it, in fact the butterfly actually climbed onto one of the cameras and remained there for a while. It then climbed from camera to hand, and we took it outside for more pictures before it eventually flew off. It seemed to be feeding off the hand.".
