Dear Nobles and Ladies, Potentate’s Message

The first Harvest Festival was held at the Shrine Center Saturday, November 3rd. It was successful with it being the first one. We raised $470.00 for the SHC Transportation Funds. We look forward to this becoming an annual event and becoming a even bigger success.

The Veterans Appreciation Luncheon was held November 10th with LTG William Caldwell, IV, President of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia who spoke with a very impressive speech. We had a nice turnout with a delicious lunch prepared by Chief Aide Charlie Kasnowski and his Lady Mary and the Aide Corps.

There will be a lot of Christmas parades coming up and we encourage all our Nobles to participate in as many as they can.

The Children's Christmas Party will be December 9th at the Activity Building at 2:00 p.m. and the meal will be at 2:30 p.m. Please come join us for this annual event.

We hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving.

We hope all the ladies will come on the first Wednesday in December (the 5th) Larry H. Wilson 478-414-6736 for a Christmas party. Please bring a $15 - $20 gift for exchange. [email protected]

The upcoming election for 2019 will be held Wednesday, December 19th. We encourage all Nobles to be present.

We continue to keep all the sick in our prayers. God Bless. Larry H. Wilson Potentate 2018

Chief Rabban Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Social Media is like the admonition to the newly installed Master regarding the use of his gavel. Used judiciously and prudently it can be a greater good; used intemperately, for selfish gain and profit it can be the cause of terrible evil.

My Grandfather used to say, that, “if we are not here to build each other up; then we are only here to tear each other down."

There are some amazing regular / recognized (Just and Lawful) Brother Masons [PHA and what I've heard called mainstream] here. Many wise and well-informed Brethren, that have earned a wealth of knowledge. These treasured Craftsmen can help us learn and grow as men and Masons.

In celebrating our Sacred Brotherhood, let us focus on what and who we treasure in Freemasonry. Let us build each other up, and celebrate the very best of Freemasonry.

I am truly grateful for our ever-expanding Family. I am excited to see the treasures in our craft, mentoring the next generation of leaders, promoting Frankie F. Yawn the maturity in their journey; as well as their growth. I am hopeful to see 478-951-3568 these young Masons take the craft to greater health and stability. [email protected] Find what you love about Freemasonry and celebrate it. Remember freedom is not free. God bless each and every one of you. Frankie F. Yawn Chief Rabban

At Al Sihah Shriners - Veterans’ Appreciation Luncheon we had a Special Guest from the Georgia Military College, 21st President Lieutenant General (Ret.) William B. Caldwell, IV.

Georgia Military College’s growth has been significant since the arrival of President Caldwell on November 1, 2013. New campuses were opened in Fayetteville, Dublin, Eastman, Albany, and Zebulon growing the GMC footprint in Georgia to 14 campuses plus an on-line campus. In each of the four years he has been president, enrollments have set new records, with the most recent year reflecting a 4% increase in enrollments from the previous year to 14,343 students. At the same time, student success has also improved: graduation rates have increased from 25% to 28%. Programs at GMC have also expanded. GMC currently offers 23 two-year degree programs and has developed strategic partnerships with high schools, technical schools, and four-year colleges to help close gaps with traditionally disadvantaged students. The college also now offers three four-year B.A.S. programs developed for Technical School graduates in Georgia to con- tinue with their educational goals. GMC has embraced the Governor’s Dual Enrollment Program, and has almost 2,131 high school students attending courses at GMC. Under President Caldwell’s leadership, the College Corps of Cadets has significantly improved. The average SAT score of freshmen entering the Cadet Corps has risen from 960 to over 1100, physical fitness scores have increased, and GMC is a premier Military Junior College – one of only four in the US. A new program within the Corps of Cadets, the Civic Leader Program, was implemented for students who want to learn and develop leadership skills in a military environment without a follow-on military commitment. The Cadet program is built upon GMC’s core values of Duty, Honor, and Country and emphasizes the four pillars of leadership excellence—academic excellence, physical fitness, leadership development, and self-discipline.

Lieutenant General Caldwell was commissioned as an Infantry Officer from the Military Academy at West Point in June 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He went on to earn Master’s Degrees from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and from the School for Advanced Military Studies at the U.S. Army Com- mand and General Staff College. Later, he attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Univer- sity as a Senior Service College Fellow. He was also selected to serve as a White House Fellow—one of the most prestigious fellowships in our nation.

In his almost 13 years as a General Officer, Caldwell served at the highest levels of the U.S. Army. Most notably as Commanding General of the , Commanding General of the NATO Training Mission- Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, Commanding General of the US Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, and Commander of North (Fifth Army). He also served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Effects, and as spokesperson for the Multi-

National Force – Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom. His combat deployments include Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Just Cause (Panama) and Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti), Iraq and Af- ghanistan.

He also served as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Deputy Director for Operations for the United States Pacific Command, and Assistant Division Commander, 25th Infantry Division.

Lt. Gen. Caldwell received numerous awards and recognition, both domestic and foreign, during his 37 years of dis- tinguished service in the US Army and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

He and his wife, Stephanie, are both originally from Columbus, GA. Three of their children are students at the Geor- gia Military College Preparatory School.

Illustrious Sir Larry H. Wilson, Potentate stated that was an honor for Lieutenant General (Ret.) William B. Caldwell, IV’s visit to Al Sihah Shriners. Illustrious Sir Wilson presented Lieutenant General Caldwell with a plaque giving him a Honorary Membership to Al Sihah Shriners and a Fez labeled Ambassador. • 2018 • Al Sihah Shrine Mystic Messenger • Page 17 • Shawn, letter carrier and former patient, beat the odds to walk Recently became a Shriner

Among the guests at this year's Hospital Day celebration was a former patient, a letter carrier whose parents were told he might never walk.

Shawn Skau was born with club feet, a condition where both feet are twisted out of shape. His parents were told he may never walk, and if he did it would not be with a normal gait. Skau's parents brought him to Shriners Hospitals for Children — when he was 18 months old for specialty clubfoot care offered by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons. Skau had more than 10 surgeries at the hospital.

You might expect that Shawn would try to "move on" from a place that required so much of his childhood, but he actually holds fond memories of the fun activi- ties he enjoyed while in the hospital. He especially liked being in a community of other children with orthopaedic conditions. "When I was home, in school, I was the boy who walked funny and couldn't run very well. When I was at Shriners Hospital, with those boys I was just one of the guys," he said.

Our hospital shared Skau's story last year after his wife Shelly arranged a surprise hospital tour in honor of his 50th birthday. His story and enthusiasm for the hospital led to an opportunity to speak to the hospital's Board of Governors. Eventually, the U.S. Postal Service heard about him. He said it was amazing when the USPS shared a story entitled Keep the Pace, Letter Carrier Beat the Odds to Walk.

At this year's Hospital Day celebration, the staff learned that Skau joined Shriners International, the fraternity that founded and supports the care and services of Shriners Hospitals for Children. He also met National Patient Ambassador Isabella Rose and enjoyed the day's festivities as someone who personally knows the value of the orthopaedic care we provide at the Chicago Shriners Hospital.

Recorder Dear Nobles and Ladies,

A keen eye would notice that we have being doing some changes in the Mystic Messenger. New cover page, all colored inside pages, and the increase of advertisements. Illustrious Sir Billy Ray Phillips, P.P. and others have been doing a great job selling this publication. In 2019 there will be more and exciting changes coming to the Mystic Messenger. Our 1st FALL FESTIVAL at the Shrine Park on Saturday, November 3, was held. Thank you for those who worked tirelessly for the event. Even thou the attendance was not as high as we wanted, those who did attend said they will return next year. As our year is closing, there are a few things that our Club / Unit Officers need to remember; (1) Club / Unit Seminar is on January 26, 2019 (2) 2018 - 990 Form is due January 26, 2019. No exceptions. Failure to complete the necessary forms may be reflected on approvals for Project Reports. (4) All 2018 Project Reports must 478-993-6649 [email protected] be completed by December 31, 2018. Well, I asked for the cooler weather, however I did not ask for deluge of water that we have received. Amy and I want to thank you for the support you all have shown us these past two years and we hope for your continued support for the 2019 year as your Recorder. “We are patriots, each willing to serve his country with fidel- ity and courage. We cherish independence under law and freedom with responsibility.” – from The Shriners Creed One way many Shriners choose to express their love of country is through membership in the International Associa- tion Legions of Honor (IALOH). Units of the IALOH lead our Shriners parades and post the colors at meetings and events.

And, in November, as we observe Veterans Day and honor those who serve and have served in our military, the role of the IALOH becomes even more prominent and significant. For 36 consecutive years, the IALOH has been leading a remembrance observance at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, to honor the countless soldiers who have fought and died to protect our precious freedoms and our way of life. The ceremony is also a reminder to remember, honor and thank those who continue to work today to protect us – especially those stationed in danger- ous places, far from home and loved ones.

On November 10, Imperial Sir Jim Cain, accompanied by Ray Combs, International Commander of the IALOH; John Smith, Chief of Staff of the Association and Patricia Combs, retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, honoring all those who have given their lives in service to their country. Next, they proceeded to the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, and paid their respects to fallen Americans who served in the Canadian Armed Forces, leaving a poppy, a traditional symbol of remembrance.

“Participating is an honor,” said Combs. “It is the duty and obligation of every one of us to pay our respects.” The wreath laying was deeply moving and memorable for everyone involved.

2018 Al Sihah Shrine Mystic Messenger Page 29

“Being at Arlington to honor those who sacrificed their lives so that we can continue to enjoy our freedoms – which we often take for granted – was a humbling experience that will stay with me forever,” said Imperial Sir Jim Cain. “I want to thank the International Association Legion of Honor for their commitment and dedication to this important ceremony year after year.” In June, the IALOH, and the Imperial Potentate, will also participate in a similar wreath laying at the Tomb of the Canadian Unknown Soldier at the Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada. Both ceremonies are meant to perpetuate the memories of those who have died in service to their country.

Quick facts about the International Association Legions of Honor:

Approximately 9,000 members, Nearly 150 units, Units are located in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Panama, the Philippines and Germany

The Association has included veterans of every U.S military conflict since the Civil War

Some thoughts on military service from our leaders

“During the Vietnam era, I chose to join the Marine Corps – in my mind they were the best of the best – and I’ve nev- er had a regret. The education I got while a Marine was as important as anything I learned in school. November 10 is the Marine Corps’ birthday, Lisa’s and my anniversary and the day before the official Veterans Day – it’s a very im- portant day in my life and the life of our country.” – Jerry G. Gantt, chairman of the board of trustees, Shriners Hospi- tals for Children “I grew up in the Navy, having joined at age 18, and spending 26 years in service. So it truly made me who I am to- day. Serving my country was such an honor and I'm humbled by the opportunity it gave me to see the world, other cultures and countries. I am honored that I had the opportunity to serve my country and protect our freedoms. I loved my time in the Navy – it also gave me experience with leadership. Learning from some of the greatest leaders in the country gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader. Spending time as a Senior Enlisted and as a Commissioned Officer both gave me experience in numerous environments. It was an experience of a lifetime and I still miss it every day.” – James E. “Ed” Stolze Jr., member, Shriners International Imperial Divan

Date: ______Page 34 Al Sihah Shrine Mystic Messenger • November • In memory of our most distinguished Chaplain and Road Runner of the Year, Worshipful Brother - Noble Adolph Earl "Doc" Bowman

Doc Bowman made his “final trip” on October 11, 2018. This was not as a Road Run- ner carrying children to Shrine Hospitals but this trip was for him - to his heavenly home. The transition was made peacefully from our home at 131 Alderman Drive Cochran- the place he most loved to be.

Doc loved people, the Masons, Shriners and all its affiliations. Doc loved his family, his church and his God. He also loved me! If every man strives to treat their wife as faith- ful and good as Doc treated me, both will be truly blessed! He will be missed by many, especially me!

Thank you all for the many acts of kindness you showed to us during Doc’s illness and death. The calls, cards, visits, food, memorials, hugs, prayers, and your presence at his service are all appreciated. But most of all, I thank you for being our friends.

Lady Bonnie Bowman
