FOUR MONTHS after being asked if they support the right of parents to pull their children from classes that would expose them to teachings contrary to their family’s beliefs, well over half of British Columbia’s school boards have yet to reply. In a letter sent in late September to the 60 districts, the Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) posed three questions to school trustees: Would they compel children to attend classes against the wishes of their parents? Would they accommodate teachers who felt that handling certain materials violated their freedom of conscience and religion? And if they were going to compel teach- ers and students to participate, how did they think that was consistent with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? Powell River resident Sean Murphy, the CCRL’s western regional director, has since sent boards which have not responded two follow-up letters, one in mid-November and the other early in 2007. By mid-January, only 24 boards had replied. The league decided to approach the school districts after the B.C. Ministry of Education had failed to explain to its satisfac- tion how parental rights would be impacted under a contract it had signed last spring with Murray and Peter Corren, a married same-sex couple.
