Newsletter No 38

8th July 2019

Dear Parents, The final few weeks have been extremely busy with numerous events and activities. Our ninth annual Sports Dinner at Barton Grange was a memorable occasion, attended by 240 excitable pupils. Various trophies and awards were presented, and the depth and breadth of sporting talent here at Broughton is mightily impressive. It was an opportunity to be reminded of the high level of participation in competitive sport at our school. Many thanks to Mr Marquis and to Mrs Ogden (Administrative Assistant) for organising such an enjoyable event.

By Wednesday of this week all our Year 10 pupils will have had the opportunity to visit either Runshaw, Newman or ’s . As we have come to expect, the behaviour of your sons/daughters at such events has been impeccable. They can be trusted to represent themselves and our school with distinction. Thank you to Miss Cross for coordinating such a series of helpful, informative visits. Last week, Year 10 were also involved in a series of mock interviews with representatives from organisations including BAE Systems, Barnardo’s, HMRC, Teaching Hospitals NHS, Nationwide Building Society, Preston Marriott, the Royal Air Force and Sellafield Ltd.

Finally, elsewhere in this newsletter, you can read about the Year 8 formal debates in English. The motion was ‘The UK no longer needs its Royal Family.’ The high quality of presentation was particularly impressive. The speakers delivered each address with poise, clarity and a sense of informed opinion. The three different audiences listened intently and subsequently asked a number of pertinent, challenging questions. Another example of Broughton at its best. Thanks to Mrs Wright and Miss Maloney for preparing the pupils for this event. Thank you for all your support with the Sponsored Walk money. As you are aware, all the funds will be used to install some canopies to cover the picnic bench area and the queue for the kiosk. As always, thank you for your continued support. If you are happy or unhappy with any aspects of life here at Broughton, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is [email protected].

Welcome to the New Year 7 Pupils Last Monday we welcomed 184 new pupils to Broughton for their induction day. The day was busy, enjoyable and informative and the pupils told us that they had a very positive first day at Broughton.

The Science, PE, Drama and Modern Language lessons were extremely popular. However, the highlight of the day was the food. The new pupils cannot wait for September and more Broughton food.

A huge thank you to all the pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9, and also to the staff, who helped make the day and evening run so smoothly. Special thanks go to the Year 10 pupils who gave informative presentations about life at Broughton and answered an array of questions from the primary pupils. Mrs Higham

UCLAN Art and Design Degree Shows I often attend the Art and Design Degree Shows at UCLAN but this year was very special because two ex-Broughton GCSE Artists were exhibiting work from the Textile Design BA (Hons) Course. Caitlin Cross and Sally Nash left Broughton in 2014 and have pursued Art and Design at College and University ever since.

Their exhibitions were very impressive; I was extremely proud of their achievement and wish them well in their creative futures. Ms Smith

Year 10 Practice Interviews - Wednesday 3rd July 2019

“WOW!” was a word I heard a couple of times last Wednesday about our Year

10 pupils from the seventeen volunteers, some of them parents, who came into

school for the morning in order for our Year 10 pupils to have a practice

interview. Not only was the feedback from the visitors extremely

complementary, but the comments from our pupils also showed how valuable

the experience had been to them. There was not one negative remark; lots of

pupils wished that they had been given more time and additional surprise

questions.

• Is your child in Year 10? Ask them to share with you their written

feedback sheet.

• Do they have a collection of their achievements? Could they start

gathering these things together?

• Do they need to get involved in activities both within and outside

of school to allow them to demonstrate their employability skills?

• Did their interviewer inspire something in them? Do they now

want to find out about a particular discipline or pathway that they

have not considered before?

• Do they need to see Paula Askew our Careers Advisor as a result?

Why not make an appointment for them by emailing [email protected].

I must mention a number of pupils that were particularly helpful to me in the run up

to the event and on the day. Thank you to Tom McDonald, Caitlin Harmer,

Emma Sweeney and Nathan Holmes for preparing and delivering an assembly

on interview techniques for Year 10 assembly. Also thank you to all pupils for

helping greet our visitors on Wednesday.

Year 9

MAD Week

Last week was Year 9 MAD week. This is when the Art and Drama Departments combine to give pupils the opportunity to experience Multi-Disciplinary Arts work. Pupils rehearse, then perform the play 'Herecleia 2.0', written by Mrs Fahey, using sets, costume, masks, make-up created in Art; we aim for this to be a powerful theatrical experience. Year 9 pupils responded with focus, enthusiasm and excitement and staff were extremely impressed with the resulting performances. Ms Smith

Year 8 Debates

On Wednesday, 3rd July, the whole of Year 8 participated in a debate arguing for or against the motion that ‘Britain no longer needs its Royal Family.’ After weeks of research, writing and refinement, the chosen speakers were highly motivated and certainly did not disappoint.

Thirteen pupils, from different classes, delivered confident and mature deliberations, impressing their peers and teachers alike with their carefully crafted vocabulary, as well as their convincing and passionate communication skills: Miranda Billington (Winner) William Sant (Winner) Rebecca Wright (Winner) Isaac Deluce (Winner) Megan Sloan (Winner) Archie Macleod (Winner) Amaan Wadiwala Samit Connolly Viki Clarke Rory Hastings Felix Coxon Indiana Moore David Mercer

The floor discussions that followed demonstrated just how quick and clever so many of our Year 8 pupils can be; it really was a wonderful demonstration of intelligence, collaboration and respect from those that participated. Well done, Year 8. Mrs Wright

A Level English Taster Workshop

Broughton’s English Department was delighted to welcome Vivienne Hand and Lisa Greenhough, from last Tuesday who delivered an English A Level taster workshop for pupils in Year 10.

The session looked at the creation of literary and real-life anti-heroes in various texts, ranging from Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ to newspaper articles about Donald Trump and our very own Boris Johnson! As always, our pupils conducted themselves superbly throughout and were a credit to the school.

Special mention must also go to former pupil, Megan Whitlock, who volunteered to come in and help run the sessions. Megan left Broughton with a string of A* grades in 2016 and is currently studying English at Merton College, Oxford. We wish her all the very best as she continues on her academic journey. A BUSY WEEK IN THE LIBRARY

We have had a busy week in the library beginning with a ‘Book Speed Dating’ session for one of our Year 8 classes. Seven ‘dating stations’ were set up and pupils were given five minutes at each station to look through a wide selection of books and choose one to read for a period of three minutes before moving onto the next station. It is a great way of introducing different authors and genres to our pupils and hopefully encouraging them to do some wider reading. There was a large variety of books to choose from and it was fantastic to see so many pupils borrowing books at the end of the session.

Wednesday saw us taking four of our pupil librarians to School in for the day to attend the Lancashire Pupil Librarian Conference. We really enjoyed visiting another school library and meeting other pupil

librarians from schools across the county. We took part in several activities and enjoyed a lovely lunch before rounding off the day with a ‘Bumper Book Quiz’ and the presentation of certificates and goodie bags.

Thank you to our four pupil librarians: Corby Hatton 9H, Lana Lisgo 8H, Ben Hunter 8H and Freya Nunn 7H for representing Broughton High School so well.

The end of term is almost upon us and I would like to re-iterate that pupils are welcome to borrow books from the library over the summer period. From this week until the end of term, any book loaned out will not be due back until 4th September. We do have some fantastic reads so would encourage all pupils to call in and perhaps borrow one or two to read over the summer holidays.

On a final note; the library does currently have quite a high number of overdue books. Please encourage your child to check their shelves etc. for any overdue books and return them to the library as soon as possible so that other pupils may read and enjoy them.

Mrs Whitlock
