Mitosis is cell division which begins in the fertilized egg (or zygote) stage and continues during the life of the organism in one way or another. Each diploid (2n) daughter cell is genetically identical to the diploid (2n) parent cell. Meiosis is cell division in the ovaries of the female and testes of the male and involves the formation of egg and sperm cells, respectively. Each diploid (2n) parent cell produces haploid (n) daughter cells. Meiosis will be discussed more fully in Chapter 5 of the Oncofertility Curriculum. For the students, the slide show can be used in its entirety or can be edited as necessary for a given class. What are the two types of cell division? There are two types of normal cell division – mitosis and meiosis. Both types of cell division take place in eukaryotic organisms. Mitosis is cell division which begins in the zygote (fertilized oocyte) and continues in somatic cells throughout the life of the organism. Mitosis is important for growth and repair since this type of cell division produces genetically identical diploid copies of the original cell. (See chapter 2 for more details.) What is meiosis? Meiosis is cell division that occurs in the ovaries of the female and testes of the male and involves the maturation of primordial ooctyes (eggs) and formation of sperm cells, respectively. Primordial oocytes are present in the ovary at the birth of the female and sperm cells form from spermatogonia (sperm stem cells) in the testes. (See chapter 6 for more details.) Meiosis is a two-phase cell division process that reduces the chromosome number by half (haploid) so when fertilization occurs, the normal chromosome number of the species (diploid) will be maintained. Meiosis ensures genetic diversity by randomly assorting the homologous pairs of chromosomes as oocytes mature and sperm cells are formed.

    PRESS RELEASE Brian Luke receives Walther Flemming Award 18 March 2015, Mainz, Germany. Brian Luke, Group Leader at the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) in Mainz, has been awarded the German Society for Cell Biology’s Walther Flemming Award. The Award is given to outstanding young researchers for scientific merit in cell biology. It is sponsored by the European Journal of Cell Biology and is accompanied by prize money of EUR 2,000. The Walther Flemming Award is named after one of the pioneers of cell biological research. His investigations in the late 19th century led him to discover chromatin and describe in detail the process of cell division, which he named mitosis. Over a century later, we know much more about these processes but there are still many unanswered questions. Brian Luke’s innovative work addresses some of these questions, especially with regard to understanding why cells sometimes enter mitosis even though chromosomes are damaged. He is using cutting-edge techniques to study telomere Brian Luke biology in the context of normal cell growth, ageing and cancer. Credit: T. Hartmann Telomeres are caps found at the ends of linear chromosomes. Although the ends of linear strands of DNA are usually recognised by the cell as being broken and trigger a DNA damage response, at the ends of chromosomes, telomeres protect the DNA from this response. They are thought to be central in the ageing process because problems with telomere function, which increase with age, can lead to cell death. Brian Luke’s lab explores several aspects of telomere structure and function that will provide valuable insights into both ageing and cancerous cells, where telomere maintenance is required for continued tumour growth.
