Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

They count actual sales and audio streams from last Friday to Thursday, based on sales of downloads, CDs, vinyl and other physical formats and audio streams weighted using SEA2 methodology. No single report could ever credibly claim to be a “definitive work” on a subject that carries such legal, moral, sociological, and philosophical weight and history as does the death penalty. This Report is certainly not such a work. It may therefore prove useful at the outset to say what this Report seeks to accomplish, and what it does not attempt to accomplish. This Report is intended to survey the landscape of capital punishment in Oregon. Specifically, this Report provides the Governor’s Office with a brief contextualized account regarding: 1. The legal and practical history of Oregon’s capital punishment system; 2. The present status of Oregon’s capital punishment system, including its legal status and functional/operational challenges; and 3. An Oregon Governor’s clemency powers as they may be exercised lawfully in the capital cases. This Report is not intended to be the “final word” on any topic, and does not even attempt to engage with many of the well-conceived arguments and observations relating to the death penalty. There are many, many nuanced writings on this topic, and while this Report cites some of them, its purpose is narrowly focused to the subjects listed above. She hopes that by sharing her story she can spare others a similar fate. Bellamy Young has two things in common with former First Lady and presidential candidate Melody "Mellie" Grant, the scheming, ambitious, and frequently intoxicated character she plays on the ABC drama Scandal: She's smart and has harbored a secret for years. A graduate of Yale University with degrees in English and theater, the 46-year-old North Carolina native won Celebrity Jeopardy! in 2015 and donated her $50,000 winnings to a charity that supplies blankets to animal shelters. The lifelong animal lover has participated in public service ad campaigns for the United Humane Society, and this year she was featured in "Being Vegan Keeps Me Young," a campaign sponsored by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. As for her secret: she endured debilitating migraines for years. "I can't remember life without them," says Young, who recalls days of being bedridden, backing out of social events, and hiding from light. And because she didn't recognize the signs of a migraine—blinding pain on the left side of her head, sensitivity to light and odors, and nausea, among others—she hid her pain and delayed seeking help or even relief. "For several years, I didn't have a word or diagnosis for what was happening. I just knew that when the pain started, I had a limited amount of time to get to a place where I could lie in complete darkness and silence until it subsided.
