Good Girls / Bad Boys www.integrasoftware.com Good Girls / Bad Boys Michael Di Stefano May 2013 It has become a sport in my house, my kids and I surf Netflix for a TV series to watch and the marathon begins. Right now it is Cheers. Last night Lilith Sternin Crane (Frasier’s wife) was angry because her editor changed the title of her book from "A Cross-Sectional Study of Control Group Females with a Tendency Towards Self Destruction Vis-A-Vis Damaging Relationships with Members of the Opposite Sex," to "Good Girls/Bad Boys." Doesn’t that say it all, not the merits of Lilith’s book but rather the importance of effectively communicating the value our work brings to our customers? Often we are too close to what we do to talk about it without diving down into the weeds of the technology, the theory, the details of why what we have done is so superior. We intuitively know why we went down this path but quickly loose the ability to communicate it; that is if we were even able to do that in the first place. Trust me, I am stricken by this same affliction. I agonize for days and sometimes weeks on what to call something, like this blurb. Good Girls/Bad Boys is catchy, grabs attention but who’s attention. Do I go with a title that more describes the topic? “The Importance of Effectively Communicating ….” So Good Girls/Bad Boys it is. A customer purchases our services or product because it fills a specific need. And it fills that need in a time and cost that meets their budget. So as important it is to produce that service/product it is more important to understand the market for it, to understand the customer. To talk to them in a way that hits home. A long time ago I took a writing class and the few things I still remember are: • If you are listing items then use a list. • If something can be said in 3 words or in 10 words, simpler is better use 3 words. It is that last one, efficiency and effectiveness in our words that is the most difficult. Remember Mark Twain’s famous quote “I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” The target audience to Lilith’s book are people who find themselves in difficult relationships. Picture yourself in a book store and you see 2 books one titled “A Cross-Sectional Study …” and the other “Good Girls/Bad Boys”. Which will you grab first? Good Girls/Bad Boys! That is unless you are having trouble falling to sleep at night. Some years ago I wrote a book “Distributed Data Management for Grid Computing”. And that was the short concise version, the other choices were eliminated because we ran out of room on the cover! How proud I was to see it on the shelves of Barnes & Noble! How confused I was to see it buried in the Relational Database Management section. Couldn’t they tell from the title it was about distributed computing? Maybe my royalty checks would have been bigger if I went with something like “Data Here, Data There, Data Everywhere” or “What is this Grid Thing Everyone Keeps Talking About?. Lessons learned. Know your target audience. Know your customer. And if you cannot efficiently communicate the value you bring to the market, find someone who can help you! .

Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. "Television Viewing Among Blacks" shows that TV viewing within black households is 48% higher than all other households. In 1990, black households viewed an average 69.8 hours of TV a week. Non-black households watched an average 47.1 hours. The three highest-rated prime-time series among black audiences are "A Different World," "The Cosby Show" and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Nielsen said. All are on NBC and all feature blacks. "Advertisers and marketers are mainly concerned with age and income, and not race," said Doug Alligood, VP-special markets at BBDO, New York. "Advertisers and marketers target shows that have a broader appeal and can generate a large viewing audience." Mr. Alligood said this can have significant implications for general-market advertisers that also need to reach blacks. "If you are running a general ad campaign, you will underdeliver black consumers," he said. "If you can offset that delivery with those shows that they watch heavily, you will get a small composition vs. the overall audience." Hit shows -- such as ABC's "Roseanne" and CBS' "Murphy Brown" and "Designing Women" -- had lower ratings with black audiences than with the general population because "there is very little recognition that blacks exist" in those shows.

Because the application was time barred, we affirm. The standard of review on appeal from the denial of a postconviction relief application, including summary judgment dismissals, is for errors of law. Castro v. State, 795 N.W.2d 789, 792 (Iowa 2011). Postconviction proceedings that raise constitutional issues are reviewed de novo. Ledezma v. State, 626 N.W.2d 134, 141 (Iowa 2001). On August 31, 1986, Steven Frasier, Simon Tunstall, and James Simpson were each charged with murder and burglary stemming from the shooting death of Jeffrey Jones in Sioux City, Iowa. Each defendant pled not guilty and proceeded to a joint trial in the Iowa District Court for Woodbury County. In February 1987, a jury convicted Frasier of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. The jury also found that Frasier had a firearm during the commission of the offenses. On March 30, 1987, the district court denied Frasier’s post-trial motions and sentenced him to life imprisonment on the murder conviction and a term of imprisonment not to exceed twenty-five years on the burglary conviction, with the sentences to be served concurrently.

Darowski and Kate Darowski, are self-confessed Frasier fans with a background in different ambits of cultural study (the former as editor of the “Ages of Superheroes” essay series and author of X-Men and the Mutant Metaphor: Race and Gender in the Comic Books and the latter having researched the history of decorative arts and design). Above all, they share a mutual appreciation for all things Crane. From a structural perspective, the book is divided into two parts: “Part I: Making A Classic” and “Part II: Under Analysis”. Each section is further subdivided into four separate topics.
