Another HenleyBy P. B. HawkinsAll I can say is congratulations to Beth Henley! Henley won a Pulitzer for "Crimes of the Heart" which I have read and seen performed. I was underwhelmed by both experiences. As an audience member who has seen my share of theatrical performances, "Abundance" does not have near the staying power of "Crimes of the Heart". I very much appreciate southern writers, female southern writers in particular. Perhaps Henley is over my head and I just don't get it. If that is the case, I say touche'.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy ElizabethWomen struggle with dreams of love and adventure. From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Crimes of the Heart comes this poignant but unromanticized story of the hard lives of pioneers on the high plains of Wyoming in the 1860's. Macon and Bess are two mail-order brides, lured to the West by the promise of new beginnings through marriage to men they have never met.

  • Discourse, Gender, and the Orient in Zack Snyder's
“THIS IS SPARTA!” DISCOURSE, GENDER, AND THE ORIENT IN ZACK SNYDER’S 300 Jeroen Lauwers, Marieke Dhont and Xanne Huybrecht Zack Snyder’s 2006 film 300, which is based on Frank Miller’s 1998 graphic novel,1 tells the heroic story of the Spartan king Leonidas and his three hundred men. Because Leonidas is forbidden by the oracle and her priests from leading the Spartan army against the mighty Persian god-king Xerxes, he decides to head north himself with a “personal bodyguard” of three hundred of his finest men. This relatively small number of soldiers, joined by an auxiliary Arcadian force, holds the countless number of Persian soldiers back for no fewer than three days. Meanwhile in Sparta, Queen Gorgo works to have the Spartans send additional men to Thermopylae to rescue her husband and his Three Hundred, but her efforts are thwarted by the treason of the politician Theron.2 Ever since the movie’s release, critical and popular opinions have advanced many different perspectives. A rather large number of people have found diverse reasons for considering 300 offensive. One aspect of this critique revolves around its so-called homophobia,3 for example, in the scene in which Leonidas arrogantly calls the Athenians “those phi- losophers and boy-lovers.” Others vituperate the movie for its supposed fascist ideals, pointing out uncanny parallels between the Spartan society and the “Third Reich”: the extreme nationalism, the mutual equality of the Spartiates and their superiority to the helots, the (primitive) genetic selec- tion, and considering women as breeding machines for an ideal fighting 1 The movie quite strictly follows the design and the perspective of the graphic novel.

  • Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue Formatted
Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star.

Of course, that was the aim of his magisterial scholarly work, and while unquestionably impressive, his tome turned out to be by no means the last word on the topic. Indeed over the intervening quarter century, quite to the contrary, we witnessed a continuously increasing outpouring of specialized political science, historical, philosophical, psychological, and other disciplinary studies with clearly ―no school of leadership‖with a single unifying theory emerging.

Publication Date: September 4, 2018 Media Contact: Diane Levinson, Publicity [email protected] 212.354.8840 x248 The Endings Photographic Stories of Love, Loss, Heartbreak, and Beginning Again By Caitlin Cronenberg and Jessica Ennis • Foreword by Mary Harron 11 x 8 in, 136pp, Hardcover, Photographs throughout ISBN 978‐1‐4521‐5568‐5, $29.95 Featuring some of today’s most celebrated actresses, including Julianne Moore, Alison Pill, and Imogen Poots, the photographic vignettes in The Endings capture female characters in the throes of emotional transformation. Photographer Caitlin Cronenberg and art director Jessica Ennis created stories of heartbreak, relationship endings, and new beginnings—fictional but often inspired by real life—and set out to convey the raw emotions that are exposed in these most vulnerable states. Cronenberg and Ennis collaborated with each actress to develop a character, build the world she inhabits, and then photograph her as she lived the role before the camera. Patricia Clarkson depicts a woman meeting her younger lover in the campus library—even though they both know the relationship has been over since before it even began. Juno Temple portrays a broken‐hearted woman who engages in reckless and self‐destructive behavior to numb the sadness she feels. Keira Knightley ritualistically cleanses herself and her home after the death of her great love. Also featured are Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danielle Brooks, Tessa Thompson, Noomi Rapace, and many more. These intimate images combine the lush beauty and rich details of fashion photographs with the drama and narrative energy of film stills. Telling stories of sadness, loneliness, anger, relief, rebirth, freedom, and happiness, they are about relationship endings, but they are also about beginnings.
