Human Rights Defenders Alert - India is a forum of human rights defenders (HRDs). It endeavours to initiate actions on behalf of HRDs under threat or with security concerns. We are writing to express our deep concern in the matter of social activists and HRD Mr Kurban Ali and three others. They are being implicated in a false criminal case for extending legal help to a family belonging to a minority community who has been the victim of a mob lynching incident. The FIR was lodged in the Kandhla police station of district Shamli in Uttar Pradesh based on a complaint by Mr. Afzal Ali of Molanan locality, Kandhla town, Shamli. Afzal has been accused of threatening the Kurban Ali with dire consequences for extending legal support to the victim family. Status of the Human Rights Defender Mr Kurban Ali is associated with the Afkar India Foundation, which is a grass-roots human rights organisation based in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. He has also been associated with ‘Aman Biradari’ for the last two years. Aman Biradri is a nationwide people’s campaign for a secular, peaceful, just and humane world. -

Atkinson’s Statistical, Descriptive and Histori¬ cal Account of the North-Western Provinces of India, Vol. II, (1875), various Settlement Reports of the region and H. R. Nevill’s Muzaffarnagar : A Gazetteer (Allahabad, 1903), and its supplements. The present Gazetteer of the district is the twenty- eighth in the series of revised District Gazetteers of the State of Uttar Pradesh which are being published under a scheme jointly sponsored and financed by the Union and the State Governments. A bibliography of the published works used in the preparation of this Gazetteer appears at its end. The census data of 1961 and 1971 have been made the basis for the statistics mentioned in the Gazetteer. I am grateful to the Chairman and members of the State Advisory Board, Dr P. N. However, the existing management system is not enough to link the desired Archives quality level to the water quality level for various designated-best-use. In western countries, such as Federal Republic of Germany, the maps based on bio-monitoring have proved as a Home powerful tool for preparation of action plan for control of pollution and for improvement of water quality of rivers. The Central Pollution Control Board has taken up a project to utilize the bio-monitoring data of rivers to evolve a bio-map of entire stretches of river basins in India. In this issue of PARIVESH Newsletter the methodology of biological classification of various stretches of river basins has been presented.
