Navajo Nation Region 2018 NEEDS AND ASSETS REPORT NAVAJO NATION REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP COUNCIL 2018 NEEDS AND ASSETS REPORT Prepared by Community Research, Evaluation, and Development (CRED) John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences College of Agriculture and Life Sciences University of Arizona Funded by First Things First Navajo Nation Regional Partnership Council LETTER FROM THE CHAIR September 14, 2018 Message from the Chair: Since the inception of First Things First, the Navajo Nation Regional Partnership Council has taken great pride in supporting evidence-based and evidence-informed early childhood programs that are improving outcomes for young children. Through both programmatic and other systems-building approaches, the early childhood programs and services supported by the regional council have strengthened families, improved the quality of early learning, and enhanced the health and well-being of children birth to 5 years old in our community. This impact would not have been possible without data to guide our discussions and decisions. One of the primary sources of that data is our regional Needs and Assets report, which provides us with information about the status of families and young children in our community, identifies the needs of young children, and details the supports available to meet those needs. Along with feedback from families and early childhood stakeholders, the report helps us to prioritize the needs of young children in our area and determine how to leverage First Things First resources to improve outcomes for young children in our communities. The Navajo Nation Regional Council would like to thank our Needs and Assets vendor, University of Arizona - Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, for their knowledge, expertise and analysis of the Navajo Nation region. Their partnership has been crucial to our development of this report and to our understanding of the extensive information contained within these pages. As we move forward, the First Things First Navajo Nation Regional Partnership Council remains committed to helping more children in our community arrive at kindergarten prepared to be successful by funding high-quality early childhood services, collaborating with system partners to maximize resources, and continuing to build awareness across all sectors on the importance of the early years to the success of our children, our communities and our state. Thanks to our dedicated staff, volunteers and community partners, First Things First has made significant progress toward our vision that all children in Arizona arrive at kindergarten healthy and ready to succeed. Understanding the critical role the early years play in a child’s future success is crucial to our ability to foster each child’s optimal development and, in turn, impact all aspects of wellbeing of our communities and our state. This Needs and Assets Report for the Navajo Nation Region helps us in understanding the needs of young children, the resources available to meet those needs and gaps that may exist in those resources. An overview of this information is provided in the Executive Summary and documented in further detail in the full report. The First Things First Navajo Nation Regional Partnership Council recognizes the importance of investing in young children and ensuring that families and caregivers have options when it comes to supporting the healthy development of young children in their care. This report provides information that will aid the Council’s funding decisions, as well as our work with community partners on building a comprehensive early childhood system that best meets the needs of young children in our community. It is our sincere hope that this information will help guide community conversations about how we can best support school readiness for all children in the Navajo Nation region. This information may also be useful to stakeholders in our area as they work to enhance the resources available to young children and their families and as they make decisions about how best to support children birth to 5 years old in our area.
