rd nrr G nnr in KGS DIAMOND a technology driven company.

The history of KGS DIAMOND starts in 1952 when Natale Ferronato founds a company near Zürich, Switzerland, producing cold bonded quality abrasives, mainly for grinding and polishing applications: Natale Ferronato & Co. In the next years the production activities expand with the introduction of sintering production methods.

In 1970 Natale Ferronato passes the management responsibility to his wife Maryse Ferronato, who is succeeded in 1980 by Sandro Ferronato, today’s President and CEO. In 1985 the company is renamed to KGS DIAMOND. In the next years a strong international development starts and the company opens sales offices around the world and acquires new production facilities.

KGS is a globally active company – with Swiss roots. In order to be close to our customers we have a global sales and distribution network with 18 companies in 13 countries in Europe, North America, Middle East, and Asia providing engineered solutions for hard to grind & brittle materials in Aerospace, Glass, Porcelain, Electronics, Automotive, Construction, Stone and Floor related markets. 5 manufacturing sites – located in Switzerland, The Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates – providing a wide range of diamond tools, flexible diamond abrasives and premium coated abrasives.

KGS DIAMOND has been a world leading producer KGS Swiflex® Cobra 2.0 of resin and flexible diamond abrasives for over 60 years. The company’s top priority is the constant de- velopment and patenting of innovative tech- nology. The understanding of many complex proces- ses, such as the metalization of fabrics, electroplating, sintering, as well as resin and metal technologies, al- lows technological synergy that leads to the success- ful development of extremely unique products.

KGS DIAMOND has brought several innovative grin- ding and polishing solutions to the market, such as the KGS Swiflex®, which was the first flexible diamond abrasive tool for dry grinding and polishing, or the KGS Speedline® polishing discs. KGS DIAMOND has set new standards in the field of flexible diamond ab- rasives.

One example of an electroplated diamond tool is Grooving in concrete the KGS Swiflex® Cobra 2.0 Diamond Cutting and Grinding Disc – which is extremely efficient, elec- troplated on both sides, and has an M14 flange. The Cobra stands out from the competition in its versati- lity and high-performance working on a broad range of building materials.

The Cobra is the perfect tool for:

• Cutting, grinding and removing tile during renovation • Removing tile adhesive • Smooth grinding and deburring of exposed con- crete or pre-cast concrete for concrete cosmetics • Cutting old pipes from screed • Grooving in walls and floors • Working on building materials such as , and engineered stone Cutting tiles and grinding tile adhesive

The KGS Swiflex® Cobra 2.0 grinds quickly and effi- ciently and ensures a smooth, high-quality finished surface. Another advantage of this tool is the ability to cut materials all the way up to their edges. The M14 flange allows assembly to the angle grinder without the use of tools — saving time and eliminating extra steps. High efficiency and the ability to process a wide range of materials makes the KGS Swiflex® Cobra 2.0 a universally versatile tool that can handle anything.

Natural stone, ceramic, engineered stone, and concrete surfaces can be ground and polished with heavy machines, light equipment, or hand-tools. Ground and polished surfaces have the advantage that, if needed, they can also be re-ground and re-polished to repair any defects. The appearance of the surfaces does depend on the material and condition, but most importantly on how the surface is processed.

Example Uses • Chamfering and edging • Surface grinding • Grinding and polishing of hard-to-reach places and corners • Hand grinding, deburring, defect removal, spot grinding, and sharpening of hard metals or cutting tools

KGS Diamond offers a complete range of products designed to handle a broad variety of grinding and polis- hing projects. You can find further information and tool recommendations in the KGS Tool-Matrix.

KGS DIAMOND - Abrasives for Construction Materials Page 13 Materials and Areas of Application

Common types of stone material are grouped together and listed in the KGS Tool-Matrix.

• Hard Stone H • Soft Stone S

• Ceramic CER • Engineered Stone E • Concrete C

The recommended tools and quality levels are listed in the chronological order that the grinding and polishing should be done. The tools are also listed in the order of use for hand-tool and power-tool grinding.

Natural stones can be grouped into two categories, namely hard and soft natural stones. You must consider the type of natural stone and the tools and equipment available for completing any grinding or polishing job. Different methods can be required, depending on the natural stone material as well as the available tools and equipment. In a practical sense, this means that hard stone cannot be scratched or cut with simple, at-home tools such as kitchen .

H Hard Stone: e.g. Granite, basalt, gneiss, porphyry, quartzite

Because of their hardness and acid resistant qualities, these stones are especially suitable for kitchen counter- tops, bathroom construction, showers, floor tiles, stairs, window sills, tables, solid basins, walls, or fireplace covers. Other possible uses include pavement and bricklaying, materials used for outdoor walkways and stairs, bricks, stone furniture and decorations, fountains, and facades and veneers for exterior wall claddings.

S Soft Stone: e.g. Marble, and dolomite, travertine and onyx marble, alabaster, serpentinite, slate, and sandstone

If the stone is more than 90% quartz in its mineral make-up, it is considered a sandstone. These stones are modified using sandstone tools.

Soft stones, such as marble (a popular choice for bathroom material), limestone, slate, and travertine are used indoors as floor tiles and window sills, or in outdoor areas as tiles because of their strong material proper- ties and high-quality appearance. Slate is used often for wall cladding, floor tile, and even tables. Most onyxes are translucent and can add an innovative design element to a space. For example, they can be used as backlighting in bars, , bathrooms, or wall cladding. One thing to note about soft stone, however, is that it is not scratch or acid resistant. KGS Diamond offers a complete special catalogue of diamond tools and materials that are perfect for working with marble.

CER Large and Small Ceramic Tiles In construction, a distinction is made between earthenware (for wall tiles in a bathroom area) and stone- ware (for areas exposed to higher stress/use), and fine stoneware (break, chemical, and wear resistant), and cotto (for wall and floor tiling), cement tiles, and clinker tiles. Porcelain ceramics are also new on the market from brands such as Dekton®, NEOLITH® or selatec®. In the past few years, the trend has been to use extremely large (up to 3,20m x 1,60m) but thin plates. We will help you find the perfect diamond tool for even the most demanding projects, be it diamond cutting discs from the KGS RED™ Program or simply KGS Diamond Grinding and Polishing discs.

KGS DIAMOND - Abrasives for Construction Materials Page 14 Construction Materials

E Engineered Stone Engineered stone refers to a group of non-natural construction materials. Engineered stone (also polyresin, marbleite, poly-nature, polystone, and alabastrite sandstone) are mineral stones that are mixed with cement, building lime, or resin bonded materials and the addition of sand and broken rock. Agglo-marble and quartz material are engineered stones that are bonded by resin instead of cement.

Engineered stones are used for window sills, stairs, flooring, wall tiling, baseboards, and more. Quartz ma- terials are suitable for kitchen countertops, kitchen and bathroom tiles/panels, bathroom countertops, and other kitchen fixtures. Engineered stone can be worked on similarly to natural stone, but engineered stone has a higher resistance to environmental influence and technical strain. It also has better technical properties and offers a wider selection of color and design. This is also true for floorings such as old-fashionedcement tiles and terrazzo. Quartz material and engineered stone products from brands such as Silestone®, CaesarStone®, Stone Italia- na, the hard surface Avonite® or the increasingly popular engineered stone concrete for stairs, flooring, and window sills are high-tech materials that can be used indoors and can be professionally modified using diamond tools— KGS DIAMOND offers optimal economically-efficient process solutions for these projects.

C Concrete Concrete is not just a cement construction material. Today, it is an architectural term that is starting trends in several different fields. The idea ofexposed concrete goes hand-in-hand with the grinding and polishing of concrete. Exposed concrete is not plastered or veneered, and the exposure usually serves an aesthetic purpose. This type of concrete is found both indoors and outdoors, on floors, ceilings, walls, facades, or as concrete slabs. KGS DIAMOND offers a wide range of flexible diamond tool products and abrasives for concrete cosmetics, concrete removal, concrete restoration, removal of structural defects, and for work on exposed concrete surfaces. KGS Diamond tools can be used for removing only the top layer of cement, or for removing the aggregate in its largest diameter. The grinding cycles create a shiny, reflective surface.

After cutting, the next step is grinding. Diamond grits from 30 to 400 are recommended for material removal including grinding, medium grinding, and fine grinding. A good finish and optimal polish is only possible when all the scratches from the grinding or sawing processes are removed! In addition to the typical cup wheels for material removal and rough grinding, we offer the KGS Semi-flexible Grinding Discs, which can be used for heavy material removal without generating excessive heat. Try out the innovative KGS Hybrid® Diamond Flap Discs! They offer a smooth and even grind, protection for the operator, and significantly reduced hand and arm vibrations compared to the cup wheels. They are universal, easy to use, and provide the best results for optimal and efficient operation.

POLISHING

The next step following cutting and grinding is polishing. Fine grinding and polish grinding create a silky matt surface with a 400 grit. Grits 800 and higher create a recognizable and genuine polish. The finer grits of 1500, 3000, and, if needed, the polishing grit of 10,000, create a deep glossy appearance. KGS DIAMOND offers you a wide range of products for wet and dry grinding, that are tailored to the requirements of the material, the type of process, and the application. We have brought a new generation of flexible diamond grinding discs to the market as well: The KGS Swiflex® XX sets a complete new standard for dry grinding: quick and aggressive - a simple process with the best results. The grinding results bring a high gloss finish without discoloring the materials. The KGS Swiflex® CX for dry and wet grinding, and the KGS Speedline® CM, exclusively for wet grinding, are further premium product solutions.

KGS DIAMOND - Abrasives for Construction Materials Page 65 CHEMICALS pH Value pH Value

Cleaning Product pH Values The pH value indicates whether an aqueous solution reacts in an acidic or alkaline manner. The pH value is given in non-dimensional numbers of 1-14. An aqueous solution with a pH < 7 is acidic, a pH = 7 is neutral (corresponds to pure water), and a pH > 7 is alkaline.

Acid-containing or alkaline products are often used to clean surfaces. These types of cleaners dissolve and remove heavy soiling. If the surface is only lightly soiled, a pH-neutral cleaner can be used.

When and where to use each cleaner depends on your application.

Acid-Containing Cleaner Functions Acid-containing cleaners (acedic acid-based or formic acid-based) help with the removal of lime and rust. The lower the pH-value, the stronger the cleaner and the more effective it is. However, cleaners that are too strong can affect the surface texture, so it is recommended to choose the weakest product possible (between pH-values 5 and 7).

Alkaline Cleaner Functions The main job of alkaline cleaners is the removal of different types of grease. The higher the pH-value, the higher the alkalinity and the cleaning effect. Alkaline cleaners that are too strong can also affect the surface (between pH-values 7 and 9). The use of very strong alkaline or acid-containing cleaners can be dangerous for the workers and the materi- al. Please read the material data safety sheets and the technical data sheets thoroughly. Never mix solutions of different pH-values by hand, and do not mix alkaline cleaners with acid cleaners. pH-Value Scale While a strong acid cleaner has a low pH-value, a strong alkaline cleaner has a high pH-value. The pH-Value Scale goes from 0 – 14, see below. Not all alkaline and acid cleaners are hazardous to health. Weaker clea- ners with a pH-value of approx. 7 can be found in many everyday-use products. Substances with a pH-value lower than 5 and higher than 9 should always be handled with gloves.

KGS DIAMOND offers a small assortment of electric and pneumatic machines. In stone and ceramic processing, the use of handheld machines with adjustable speeds are commonplace in order to use the diamond grinding and polishing technology properly and universally.

On the product pages of the catalogue, the maximum speeds and recommended revolutions per minute are included to ensure optimal usage. The results depend on these parameters, along with other factors. The proper machine selection with the corresponding performance data is an important factor, in addition to the product type, grain size, cutting speed, and the contact pressure in wet or dry grinding.
