Schlüsselbegriffe: Bête du Gévaudan – Prädation – Wolfsangriff – Frankreich – Kryptozoologie – Re- zeption – Volkskunde Metamorphoses of the Bête du Gévaudan – or: the appeal of the uncommon and unknown Abstract – The Beast of Gévaudan was a wolf-like animal that killed ca. 100 victims between 1764 and 1767. The events have never been fully resolved, thus inviting many speculations. The theories about the true nature of the beast serve to trace social and cultural explanatory models concerning aggres- sive lupine behaviour. Related to the return of wolves’ discourses about the nature of these animals and their eventual threat to humans are becoming more important. The paper retraces negotiations about knowledge, its legitimacy and its social acceptance based on the history of the Beast of Gévaudan. Keywords: Bête du Gévaudan – predation – wolf attack – France – cryptozoology – reception – folklore 1 Dr. Meret Fehlmann ist Kulturwissenschaftlerin.

  • (2016) Teen Wolf Jeff Davis Lindsay Katzir
215 Teen Wolf Jeff Davis Lindsay Katzir, Louisiana State University MTV, (2011- ) Seasons 1 – 5 (Part 1), 2015, $80 MTV’s Teen Wolf (2011- ) is nothing if not aware of its own unbelievable premise. In the penultimate episode of the series’ first season, Kate Argent explains to her niece Allison that “there are werewolves running around in the world. Everything’s a joke to me!” Indeed, the acclaimed series never loses sight of the fact that, no matter how powerful the acting, nor how creative the directing, it is a show about teen werewolves. As such, its creator, writers, and actors infuse humor into even the most dramatic and gruesome of moments. Creator Jeff Davis loosely based his Teen Wolf on the 1985 film of the same name. Like the original film, Davis’s version centers on a high school student named Scott, a social outcast longing to get a girlfriend and to excel in sports, whose newfound werewolf abilities boost him up his school’s social ladder. But Davis’s series takes on a life of its own, crafting a complex mythology that develops over the course of its five (and counting) seasons. Each season resolves a central mystery. The conflict largely revolves around the principal wolf pack, their human friends, a family of werewolf hunters, rival packs, and an assortment of supernatural creatures that have been underexplored in American television – including failed werewolves, banshees, oni, druids, mythical beasts, and demons. From its beginning, Teen Wolf adapts and expands conventional werewolf lore. After being bitten by a werewolf in the pilot, Scott McCall discovers he has suddenly developed preternatural hearing, heightened olfactory senses, accelerated healing powers, and increased speed, agility, and strength.

Page 97 TELEVISION REVIEWS Sympathy for the Devil? Appropriate Adult (ITV 1, September 2011) Not much feted previously for the quality of its dramas (unless it was by fans of outlandish psycho thrillers about the perils of adultery), ITV has recently been enjoying a renaissance in quality that has made even the BBC sit up and take notice, as witnessed by lastyear’s much hyped Downtown Abbey / Upstairs Downstairs faceoff (the enjoyably preposterous Downtown Abbey walked away with all the prizes and plaudits). However, producing a drama based on events surrounding one of the most notorious crime stories of the 1990s – the serial killing exploits of gruesome twosome Fred and Rosemary West – was always going to be a rather more delicate proposition than assembling an assortment of noted Thesps in a stately home and letting them get on with talking ponderously about how “War changes things...” Let’s face it, the serial killer biopic is a particularly debased format, as epitomised most vividly in the distasteful antics of the now defunct (but much lamented, at least until its partial reincarnation as Palisades/Tartan) Tartan Metro company, which was a respectful and intelligent distributor of international and hardtoget genre films but which also helped bankroll three particularly regrettable movies of this type. These were; the sordid, workmanlike Ed Gein (2000), the deeply offensive (on many levels) Ted Bundy (2003) – which actually soundtracked a montage sequence depicting Bundy’s peripatetic assaults on dozens of young women with comedy music and the supposedly “hilarious” sound of his victims being hit on the head – and the equally repugnant The Hillside Strangler (2006).

Bridget Liang, PhD Candidate, Women, Gender, and Feminist Studies York University [email protected] Abstract: This paper is both a theoretical and creative exploration using fan ficion. Monsters have drawn my interest because they are often metaphors for marginalized folks. Through histories of marginalized experiences represented as monsters and villains, I claim the monster as my own. In more recent iterations of the monster, I have observed this pull towards the normate looking at the show Teen Wolf in comparison to the 1984 movie by the same name. The monster becomes the protagonist, but in doing so, ends up becoming predominantly white, heterosexual, cisgender, abled, thin, and conventionally attractive. Furthermore, the representations of the monster consist of bodies that draw closer to the normate, but are exemplary of the norms of desirability. In short, they find the hottest models to play as monsters. The monster is no longer the marginalized subject, but becomes an expected, unattainable norm of desirability like Audre Lorde’s “mythical norm”. In response to this mythical norm, I have rewritten the scripts as fans sometimes do. In Teen Wolf, the protagonist, Scott McCall becomes abled upon becoming a werewolf.
